I think we should check the archives and review all the times we have discussed this already.

If we have anything new to add then we should state that here, clearly and persuasively.

There's a lot of coolness on YouTube. It's fine with me if someone else does the legwork to find the "best of." And if the subject doesn't interest me, I use that five minutes to browse the next post. Or go pee.

I was a big youtube hater at first, but mostly because people were posting the "jackass" moments. Now, I have trouble finding the good stuff there. Post away, if it is good. The flood has overwhelmed youtube and if the hive here can find the really interesting stuff lets see it. A good youtube post has always been appreciated, but now perhaps just a tad more.

Hey, at least the posters are usually kind enough to point out that it's a youtube link. That saves you from even having to hover your mouse over the yellow text.

Should I be ashamed that I felt a little thrill of anticipation when I saw that someone had asked other people to do the searching for them? I suspect I should.

My impression is that youtube links go bad much faster than the average of other kinds of links, and if that is true, the rising tide of youtube links will eventually make the past of MetaFilter lots deader than it is now.

And that past, you long term members, is a place you have put a great deal of time and effort into creating.

Step two : add metafilter.com to your .hosts file.
Step three : forget you ever heard of metafilter.com.

localhuman, do what rational people do when they find something that annoys them. Don't look. Skip the post and read another or don't. But don't flippin' complain when you can't even be bothered to do a simple search to see that this has been covered extensively already.

Does Matt need to code it in so that the next noob automatically sees that its been dealt with again and again? It would be waste of time because every noob thinks their complaint is super special. It's not, you're not.

I'm not a huge fan of YouTube, the video quality is awful. But there really is some pretty good stuff to be found on it. Since its part of the intarnets, its fair game to be posted to the blue.

What I find far more annoying are the people who don't tag their damned posts and I cannot understand why Matt hasn't made at least one tag mandatory before posting.

Oh, please. Like bitchily complaining about how you're "sick of" the way lots of community members post to the front page "really makes Metafilter a better place." Yeah, right.

Not to mention the fact that your complaint is framed completely stupidly - if you're gonna complain, at least address the quality of the links, rather than attacking the hosting site. And yet after all that, you still feel you have the high ground over someone who - gasp - uses the word "douchebag" at MeFi. Amazing.

Yeah, he really should do that. And switch to using commas to separate tags instead of spaces.
posted by mediareport at 10:11 PM on November 12, 2006

I feel that the responses here do not address the source of the problem: youtube. We wouldn't have this problem if the denizens of youtube just quit posting so many videos that are interesting to watch. We should just get rid of youtube.

Realistically, curbing this phenomenom is something that the majority of the community wants. If there is enough social pressure against making youtube oriented posts, then it'll die off. But there isn't. Metafilter doesn't have that mentality about youtube quite yet. And come to think of it... even if there is a strong movement against it, I don't think it'd be resolved either. There's still newsfilter. People still post wikipedia links. The community is changing rapidly enough that it doesn't speak with one mind on what it likes to post. Fortunately, it does seem to be pretty good at enforcing the guidlines that are pretty clear cut. But guidlines pertaining the the quality of the content...

"A good post to MetaFilter is something that meets the following criteria: most people haven't seen it before, there is something interesting about the content on the page, and it might warrant discussion from others."

...are a bit more vague. Youtube has some interesting, novel stuff, so I'm not suprised that there are a lot of posts that use it.

Ummm...where was I going with this? I feel very... meta... right now.... urg.

Sorry about the doucebag remark but metatalk is kind of like the collective food fight of metafilter, everybody lets it fly here. And I at least had the good sense to link to the past threads instead of leaving it at "it uses the search or it gets the hose again."

I'm not a fan of youtube posts that aren't well-described, but aside from that I'm all for them. There's tons of other types of posts that annoy the heck out of me though, and I think if everybody took the position of "there's a category of stuff I don't like to see on the blue, I'll make a meta thread about it to see if we can get something done about it" then you'd see metatalk bursting at the seams with asspuppetry.

I'm about to reveal the fatal flaw with Metatalk, so pay attention.

There's no way you're going to get any affirmative results when you criticize the content or they style that people make their front page posts. 40,000+ people have complete control over where the links go when they make their front page post, and complaining about it here will have no effect on that. But because you have the ability to create a thread on Metatalk, you're under the delusion that it'll actually matter or amount to anything.

Unless you're Matt or Jess, and gain the ability to delete front page posts, the sooner you accept your impotence and defeat in this regard, the better.

Well now, let's examine the evidence:

nprFilter. heard it. love it. i hope mefi commune is able to find and hear things like this by themselves, but i am glad you've shared it...

OK, "nprFilter" is ambiguous: by itself an implicit putdown, but let's wait and see. "heard it. love it.": positive. "i hope mefi commune ["commune"??] is able to find and hear things like this by themselves": negative. "but i am glad you've shared it": postive, but reminiscent of "double post, but I hadn't seen it before so I'm glad you posted it." To sum up: reads very passive-aggressive, impossible to tell whether the commenter is complaining or not, lack of capital letters a serious offense. Decision: send localhuman to Guantanamo while we investigate further.
