He needs to understand that if he does this, the place will collapse like a house of cards. Potential buyers need to understand that, too.

Agent Howie is going to sell Project Metafilter? What will The Agency think of this development?

I bet he's spinning off MetaTalk. It's where the real money is anyway, you sons of motherless goats.

MetaFilter gets 600 million pageviews per month, so I think we can rest easy.

.. wait a minute, a pageview per month is worth a buck? That makes MeFi worth $600 million. I say sell it and split the proceeds with the users. Maybe split the proceeds weighted by favorites and best answers :)

For this price, I promise we'll all wait until your noncompete expires, and then sign up for your new venture.
posted by ikkyu2 at 9:33 PM on December 11, 2006

Ikkyu, you were looking at the reach chart, not the pageviews chart. Pageviews seem to range between 20 and 40 million per month, which is still a hell of a lot!

Looking at the alexa traffic chart, does anyone know what cause the bump in traffic that occurred late April of this year?

No way that was written by Matt.

I'm bettin' mathowie is stubborn enough to keep at it until he finally fixes the downtime issue. He's gonna learn a lot of *nix in the process...

mefi gets about 9 million pages a month and no, I didn't post that.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 9:51 PM on December 11, 2006

Nah, #1 wouldn't do it, too many of us know where he lives and we'd have plenty of free time after MeFi caved in on itself with a replacement moderator who couldn't show the same restraint and good nature that Matt has shown all these years.

Besides, the new owner would have a really high user number and nobody would show him or her ANY respect! Fookin' noob!

Dear Metafilter: I run a community web site which has lots of regular participants who think they somehow share ownership of the site just because they're willing to visit regularly. And some of them complain constantly about nearly everything I do. I'm fed up with the hassle; I'd have pitched the entire thing a lot time ago except that it's now how I earn my living.

How do I begin to enjoy it again? Is there anything I can do that will cut down on all the bitching without destroying what I've created?

So good thing I'm not, I guess.

Ha! I was wondering about that.

I was once part of a teen community that got sold off. Oh the drama. Moderators revolt, new owner locks people out and bans random members, the community moves from one place to the next...it was insane.

jdroth: Pageviews seem to range between 20 and 40 million per month

I was tempted to say you misread the chart, but actually the chart is labeled "Daily Pageviews," and the scale is "per million."

According to this chart, there are therefore 20 per million daily pageviews, but that doesn't make sense. They mean 20 million daily pageviews. I multiply that by 30 to get 600 million pageviews per month.

ikkyu2, for some reason, and I know this is unintentional and I am diluting your point, but that sounds hilarious to me.

"I read the chart, and it didn't make sense. So I multiplied it by 30!"

yeah, you can no longer get teh perfect shade of grey that you would need to make it actually indistinguishable, but the fakes still look pretty good at first glance so the joke is still available.

posted by mdn at 7:58 AM on December 12, 2006

Pretty convincing fake. The only reason I know it's fake is that the "posted by" line is a bit smaller than it should be.
posted by emelenjr at 8:13 AM on December 12, 2006

I can tell they're fakes because it says 'posted at ...PST' when all timestamps display as CET for me. That and the smaller font.
posted by jacalata at 9:05 AM on December 12, 2006

You can actually "get the perfect shade of grey" (and the right size text) with my ninja HTML skills, including getting a span with class="smallcopy" in there. But mathowie emailed me the last time I did it, so I better hadn't.
