Mefi meet-up on Azeroth, tonight on the Maelstrom server at 8pm EST. Come one, come all to be part of a re-birth of "The Blue" Guild. More inside!

I know we just talked about this, but a lot more interest was expressed in-thread than seemed to pan out in-game. So now you know the place and time, the only thing left is the people!

We're all re-rolling Alliance toons, blue or otherwise, so if you're interested, fire up a new character (or dust off that inactive one, all you original charter Blues) and give a shout out to Vaashu (Earbucket) tonight at 8pm EST on Maelstrom. If you can't make it, fire Earbucket an email so we'll have a better sense of how much interest there really is in The Blue.

(You can also PST me, Tehaanu, but Vaashu or Huuni will be able to offer a guild invite!)

In English, please.

I understood "8pm" in that sentence, and "meet-up"

jessamyn: EST stands for "Eastern Standard Time". It's a way of denoting "timezones", a sort of global time-keeping aid. More information is available here^.

HTH. For the Horde!

cortex: I don't think EST stands for "Eastern Standard Time." Later in the more inside, the poster uses "PST" as a verb. I don't think you can use a time zone as verbs. So these acronyms are probably code in this secret society language going on here.

Actually, PST refers to engaging in any number of activities that would fall under the heading "San Francisco values." You know, riding BART and stuff.

Isn't Maelstrom an RP server? I think the combination of RP and Alliance would be too much for me to take.

mathowie: In English, please.

The closest English approximation is "Neeeeerrrrrrds!"

Seconded. For the Horde!

(But I'll probably stop by, anyway.)

Eek. Sorry, I guess I did get a little carried away in my hopeless geekness. For what its worth, the intended audience (Metafilter members who play Blizzard's World of Warcraft online role playing game) will understand what I was trying to say, and it's highly unlikely than anyone else really cares.

However, my wording was rather uninclusive, so I'll decipher for you:

Azeroth: World of Warcraft in-game planet

Maelstrom server: with 8 million players, we don't all play on the same server. I have to indicate the name of the server so other players can find us.

Guild: groups of friends or players within the game. We would like to have other Metafilter members join our guild "The Blue" to play with us.

re-roll: a hold over from table top gaming, meaning to start a new character

toon: short for "cartoon," a jokey name for one's character or avatar in the game

charter Blues: There was another effort at establishing a Mefite guild. "Charter" is used just as it is normally, meaning those members who signed as founding members of a group.

PST: Acronym for "Please Send Tell," meaning to send someone a private message in-game. Absolutely nothing to do with time zones.

Vaashu, Huuni, and Tehaanu are all in-game character names of various people

Or, what Gamblor said.

ODiV, Zosia Blue: It is an RP Server, but I'm not committed to it and if we're all re-rolling anyway we might be able to convince people to do so on another server (or side!) but I can only speak for myself in that I'd really just like to see it happen.

Okay, how about anyone who is remotely interested in being part of a Mefi WoW guild just roll a throw-away character to get on to Maelstrom tonight at 8pm Eastern so we can at least see the numbers, THEN we can hash out side and server. If you can't come, email me (I'm on gmail, user name nellen).

Again, sorry about the geek jargon!

8pm Eastern = 2pm here (stupid spherical planet). I'll be at work, but /wave anyway. Let me know how it goes - I'm often on at odd times on account of insomnia.

It is an RP server, but I think the number of people I've seen RPing on it could be counted on my fingers and toes. And never in the Metafilter guild, thank god. Come on out!

I've always rolled on RP servers as a triage measure: it seems to somewhat reduce the proportion of complete idiots wandering around, and that's about the best you can hope for.

Of course, on Normal and PVP servers you don't have to listen to OOC flamewars in General Chat about whether or not you should be OOCing in General Chat, I guess.

I'm sorry, but is this something I'd have to kill 65,340,285 boars to appreciate? If so, I may have to pass.

OK, so after some discussion, we've decided to roll Blood Elves on the Tanaris realm. PvE, non-RP, Horde-side. Shoot me an email or message Moreila in-game to join up.

Maelstrom, interestingly enough, has been featured on Mefi before. But that was the Horde side of things.
