The cynical side of me believes the whole "invite" period to web sites is a ploy to build publicity. In any case its been useful to do this before (1, 2)

I thought I was hip to all the new stuff. Never heard of doostang.

"Doostang is an online career community that connects people through personal relationships and affiliations"

So it's kind of LinkedIn with a really unprofessional-sounding name? Hmm. Well, good luck to 'em, I guess.

I first heard about Joost from a friend, who was fishing for an invite from me. You might remember that there was a huge rush of invites here on Metatalk a few weeks back, but I couldn't score one. I also couldn't score an explanation of what Joost actually was. But I signed up for the beta and a couple weeks later, I got access.

Joost is basically an online video service with some 3rd rate basic cable content, and old public domain cartoons. Shows like "Stupid Japanese Guys" or somesuch -- a Jackass type show set in Japan. And Casper the Friendly Ghost cartoons from the 60's. Admittedly, stuff I've never seen elsewhere, but frankly, stuff I just haven't gotten around to sitting through.

The real draw of the service seems to be that it's available by invitation only. I had three invites a week or two ago, so I offered em up on Metatalk, asking for an email from anyone that wanted them. I got three requests within 30 minutes. This time around, I had 5 invites, and got 10 emails asking for a hookup within 6 hours, and I had to send regrets to 5.

So maybe the service will get better once they pass out of the beta stage. But for now, the best part about signing up seems to be that in a couple weeks, you'll be able to spread the virus and offer invites yourself.

posted by empath at 6:24 PM on April 27, 2007

If I say that I don't trust anybody who says they're 100% trustworthy, is it a proof that anybody who says they're 100% trustworthy actually isn't, because I don't trust 'em, so it's not 100%, or is it just some kind of contradiction, or what?

Should I take this semi-serious question to AskMe?
posted by cgc373 at 1:09 AM on April 28, 2007

Someone who actually is 100% trustworthy, is worth your trust, whether you choose to give it or not. I mean something could be worth its weight in gold, but that says nothing about your willingness to shell out the shekels.

Hey if anyone is still here. I apologize about the Doostang invites. It appears to be incredibly elitist and somewhat of a pyramid scheme. Unless you came from a target school (read: Ivy) you aren't allowed to join the so-called working groups, where the jobs and internships are posted. They don't make this known and encourage you to sign up all your friends before you have the ability to apply to these groups.

I've e-mailed Doostang asking for clarification on the requirements to join the working groups, I have yet to hear back on a reply. There are some discussions in the forums with people working for hedge funds and investment banks and still being rejected, the only factor that seems to differentiate them from everyone else is the non-top 10 school factor.

If anyone is still reading this I will still happily give invites, just be aware that unless you're part of the Doostang clique the site is rather useless. I apologize if anyone else became frustrated with this.

Since I commented in this thread--in a jokey fashion that expressed no particular interest in anything--the Doostang people have spammed me twice with invites to join their useless-to-me website. Clearly these "invites" aren't very hard to come by if they spamming email addresses with them--and needless to say, the spamming doesn't speak well of the business practices of this website. In closing, I'll mention the Doostang name a few more times to try and catch google's attention. Doostang, in the name of love, before you break my heart. Doostang: the other white meat.
posted by Kwine at 10:29 AM on May 7, 2007

I'd like to own up and take responsibility for including kwine on my invite list. Doostang sends an invitation after 7 days if you ignore the first one. That is the end of the e-mails. I have separate issues with the site (as outlined above). I cross-checked my invite list and it appears that everyone else I sent it to accepted the invite, meaning I didn't make any other mistakes.

I would like to reiterate that they have some issues now regarding how jobs are posted and listed, and have yet to respond to my e-mail inquiring how they select who gets to see which jobs. There are plenty of threads in the Doostang forums about whether there is any parity in inclusion, no one from the company has responded in the forums or on the Doostang blog.

For closure's sake, I'd like to apologize to geoff. (as I've already done privately) for my over-reaction above, when I did not realize that it was him and not some Doostang stooge, and also to the Doostang folks who were not, after all, spamming me with unwanted invitations. I should have figured that it was a fellow MeFite misunderstanding me rather than a faceless stranger.
