And what the hell is Jabber.
It's sort of like IRC for people who are halfway between nerds and normals.

... and there used to be a jabber server that everyone liked, then it went away.

It was causing troubles with the server, so Matt withdrew it. Stick to #mefi for your hot, one-on-one mefi chatting needs.

There was Mattish speculation when we moved to the new hardware that the old hardware might, itself, become dedicated to Jabberish purposes. Dunno if that's still on track, but there you go: Real Soon Now, maybe.

Meh, I'll stick to #bunnies for now, if only to poke cortex with a stick everytime he doesn't respond within nanoseconds.

I was thinking about it last week. After one more big code push, I'll be working on it, so I'd say about 2-3 weeks from now we might be running it again.

I've been thinking about it too. I can't wait for you to push that big code and really work it. Ooh.

Yeah.... yupppies.
And communists.
And those fucking people who talk on their phones in elevators.
And... uh, People who... Drive! yes, people who drive on the wrong side of the road! Yep that's it. Fuck them too.
2 - 3 weeks? Awesome! I figured it was never coming back.

Fuck Jabber. We need to raise the bar for having conversations back to "meeting face to face" to reduce the number of stupid, pretentious, self-important, inane conversations on the Internet.

I actually don't know what's wrong with fucking yuppies. I was just under the impression that any new, useful feature that Matt adds to MeFi is for yuppies.

Say gang, with a little fast typing and copious refreshing, we could turn this MeTa into a real-time chat application of our own! Heck, I'm sure Mr. Howie won't mind, and if we ask real nice, Ms. Amyn'll make sure none of those fucking yuppies come by to give us a tough time! And Mr. Tex can use these old carpet samples to make us all matching sarongs! C'mon gang, whattaya say?!?

There was Mattish speculation when we moved to the new hardware that the old hardware might, itself, become dedicated to Jabberish purposes.
You don't need significant hardware for a Jabber instance that's only going to have a room or two and a few dozen visitors at a time. Hell, $40 commodity router running OpenWRT could handle it.
Unless you do something silly, like run the Java version, or run it on an already overloaded server that's also hosting a popular website that heavily customizes every page render for every logged-in visitor. Or, y'know, both of those things.

It's even more hilarious when that popular website that heavily customizes every page render for every logged-in visitor is itself implemented in an intermediary language that compiles to Java classes.
