More white space! May 25, 2007 3:25 AM Subscribe
There's something odd about the MetaFilter home page. A huge blank space next to the sidebar, between the date and the first post.
It's a test intended to cull the simpler members from the site: if, like me, you refreshed the page ten times before thinking to scroll down, you get banned for being a divvy.

Also, jonson has a surprisingly large number of favorites, does he not? I've heard tell that it's over the 2000 mark already, by gosh!

Things were great until the 54,000s showed up. Some of them don't even know HTML!

I can't remember much past last week with any reliability, to be honest.
But that makes me cheery, childlike-bright and prone to random acts both of unexpected kindness and savage violence. Balance, man: it's all about the balance.

I thought it was conceptual art! You know, a big blank space - a void if you will - leading into a post concerning VH1. I was about to praise the post in question, but then I found out it wasn't ment to be like that.
Or was it? Oh, this high art high brow "Sanjaya" business has warped my tiny little mind.

That was the inevitable Triumph of The Stupid, also kinda sorta sidelong attributed in some beans-analyzing circles to The (proverbial) Tragedy of the Commons.
But you knew that, and I understand your question was rhetorical. *hands over a cuppa*
Amusing, though.

The link in the first line was so long that it wouldn't fit on the page with the sidebar, so it was being displayed beneath it, right?

It's really any line that's really long with no spaces. People who paste URLs without linking them tend to be the common cause, since they are space-less.

Right. An obnoxious ThisIsAPainfullyLongRiffOn...EtcFilter or such would do the same damage, it just doesn't really happen.

The plan: we get a pager. Remove the vibration alert portion and replace it with a low power electrical jolt. We attach this to cortex and create an email hook that will gently shock him whenever a new message arrives.
This way, when something breaks on the blue, he will never need to worry about sleeping through it again.
Also, we hook up a camera and set up a pay-per-view where you can watch as you send a message and zap an admin.
Matt could make a fortune off of something like this.

Yo, hook that shit up. Right now!
*begins furiously writing a small shell script that would modulate the message-sending in such a way as to make cortex do The Robot*

Nah, just put him in a closed room with a live webcam and paintball gun on a remote-controlled PTZ mount that is aimable and shootable by logged-in MeFi users.
