WiiFi: Friend Code Time Round 2

The last thread I could find was from December, and I've gotten a Wii since then (and imagine others have as well), so I thought we could have another Wii Code exchange.

There's also a page on the wiki for Wii and DS codes.

I just got a Wii recently as well. How exactly does this work? When I add your number does it send you a message saying 'Oi, quin wants access?'

And does this mean that I can infect send my Mii over to other peoples houses?

He wants out... he keeps telling me that if I don't get him access to the rest of the world, he'll kill me in my sleep. I guess the acorn really doesn't fall far, huh?

Is there any point to this aside from being able to send lousy text messages and mii's over?

And the way the process works is, I add you, you add me, and a day or so later, our's Miis migrate over and that's about it.

Do we have anything similar going for Xbox Live Gamer Tags? Hooking up with MeFites for online gaming would presumably be better than wading through the rabble.

Hot off the presses: Xbox Live Gamer Tags page on the wiki.

(To edit pages on the wiki, you first need to go to this preferences page, enter a username, and enter 'welikecameras' into the administrator password field, and hit 'Save'.)

Shouldn't that be 'wehavecameras'?

Well, you don't want to make it too obvious, do you?

good point.

RustyBrooks: There's not much of a point at the moment, except that games which use WiiConnect24 to exchange data with other people (i.e. asynchronous communication) use the Wii's address book to do so. I think Elebits is the only game out right now that has this feature.

Also, there's a remote possibility that Nintendo will pay some attention to the friend codes backlash and instead opt to use the address book as a unified friends list in future online games. I'll grant that this seems unlikely at this time, but it is technically possible.

I am, by the way, kind of shocked that there isn't too much in the way of online game play available for the wii. I mean, the device has wireless internet built in. It's connected to the internet all the time. What's the deal? Even something dumb like being able to play bowling with my mom across the state would be better than nothing.

Why not put it on your user page?
posted by delmoi at 4:45 PM on June 23, 2007

Because, for the fucking one thousand and first time no one wants to go trawling through fifty thousand user pages to find the few people who have put a code on their page.

see also miiplaza.net, which has examples of many miis. I was able to figure out how to make a Dr. Zoidberg there.

RustyBrooks: "It's connected to the internet all the time."

I wish I could find a way to do this that dosen't compromise my computer's security. My problem is I can't find a firewall that gets on with my Wii (and my DS, for that matter). Sygate works, but only when I set it to 'Allow All', and given I don't want to allow all internet traffic through my computer 24/7, the only time my Wii is connected to the net is limited to those fleeting moments when I set Sygate as such.

I'd love to be able to find a way to leave my firewall turned on while giving my Wii unrestricted access, but as much as I've tried, I can't get it done goddammit.

Oh, and my Wii code is 3173 0802 4440 8098.

Why not put it on your user page?
posted by delmoi at 6:45 PM on June 23 [+] [!]

There'd be no point to this, because entering someone's wii code does not message them indicating you'd like to "connect" with them at all. It's a 100% blind process, and there must be a double match, where A enters B's code, and B enters A's -- otherwise there's no "friending" completed.

Therefore, putting it on your userpage wouldn't do much for that process...

I thought your Wii just needs to be able to get *out* from your network. It shouldn't be a security risk to allow all outbound traffic from your network to go through. I have not specifically handled any incoming traffic redirection or pass through rules and it seems to work OK for me.

I once heard that the new Super Smash Brothers would have online multiplayer, which would be awesome. I'm not sure what the latest news on that game is, though.
