Help me find this old thread December 3, 2001 8:37 PM   Subscribe

This is almost certainly bad MeTalk etiquette, but I desperately need to find a thread posted some months ago about an autistic (or otherwise mentally handicapped woman) who made "art" by wrapping common objects in string. I want to write a paper for my Philosophy and Art class on this woman, but can't find the link... I've been Mefi/Google searching for about an hour now with no luck. IIRC, there was quite a lively discussion at the time... can anyone remember where the link was?

Here it is.

Dear god, how did you find it so fast?

Oh, I get it. Searching for "art" didn't work for me -- too broad. "Autistic" didn't turn up the results I wanted... but I forgot it was Downes Syndrome. Thanks! Matt, you can delete this thread now.

Sadly, "retarded" "art" worked.

Okay, while we're at it, how about the post about the guy who wasn't allowed to board his plane because the book he was reading was considered too revolutionary?
posted by elvissinatra at 8:59 PM on December 3, 2001

Jeez, guys.

BTW, that one was "bomb" "plane" "ecoterrorism" (I remembered that the book was about ecoterrorism and had a bomb on the cover). I'm going to bed now. Please leave a list of queries, I'll answer them in the morning. :-)

Which post was the one about the meaning of life?

Thanks. You rule. I had searched for all sorts of combinations of "flight" "book" "reading" "security" "carry on" "gate" etc, etc. I seriously searched for days. MeFi and Google to no avail. Oh well. Thanks again, jpoulos. You're a real resource!

I'm searching for the MeTa thread about the search for the thread about the autistic (or otherwise mentally handicapped woman) who made "art" by wrapping common objects in string.

Help me out jpoulos?

Good services such as jpoulos's here should earn him misdemeanour credits to be set against future disservices. By my reckoning, he's good for at least four jolly good rampages of his choosing.
Otherwise what's the incentive to be good? ;-)

I'm looking for that MetaTalk thread where we were talking about that one really long front page post by that one guy and whether it was a good post or not 'cause it might have been a double-post or maybe not and anyway Matt should just delete it, if he wants to, I mean, 'cause it's his site and we shouldn't tell him how to run it, unless he wants to have other people be moderators or install a karma system so we can rate each others' posts, and whether or not Matt should have linked to it from the sidebar or not, and people started getting really mean and calling each other names and stuff, and other people told them not to because we just don't do that sort of thing on MetaFilter. Remember that thread?

Also, I'm looking for a tape of that one Gilligan's Island episode, where they almost got rescued.

Remember that thread?

How could we forget? Now that it's been packaged with I Love Lucy and syndicated to cable, we'll be seeing that sucker for years.

How about that thread about that real-life thing that sounds just like an Onion article?

Get your war on I am not the search master jpoulos is, I just happened to have that comic bookmarked. And hey, there are five pages of it now. thanks for making me look at that again.

Hey, that comic's pretty funny. Thanks for pointing it out. You should post it to the front page....
posted by jpoulos at 10:10 AM on December 4, 2001

Wait till tomorrow, though, so you can couple it up with something from the Onion. Better still, that "God clarifies" piece they featured just after 9.11. It surely deserves a wider audience. Was that in The Onion, jpoulos? I've been googling for hours and can only come up with Vidalias. Hey, you've heard of The Onion, right, Mr. know-it-all-poulos? Don't make me you call you out on this, boyo!

thanks for making me look at that again.

And I quote (myself):

goddamn it, I absolutely refuse to dumb it down to the level where I'm oohing and ahing over some clip art plus a bunch of motherfuckin' fuckin' this's and motherfuckin' fuckin' thats's >insert ANTHRAXhere< to set up some joke per panel comic strip like it's the second coming plus the holodeck edition premier of first person bladerunner. /i>

And there's no parody, either. The whole thing's just an elaborate hoax. No one believes that anymore.

Hey, what about that thread about the Metafilter parody? Where'd that go?
It seems some bigtime Hollywood guy, Sol something, removed the original parody post. So, alas, it is no more. If it did exist, of course. Which I doubt.
* scratches sideburns *
Oh, the goats...! Heck, y'all must be thinking of that farmyard sex thread over at MetaFilter!
