My comment was deleted; how did I transgress? August 7, 2007 1:32 PM   Subscribe

I had a comment in this thread deleted, and I'm not sure why. I don't believe I was insulting or anything, but don't want to re-offend. How do I find out what happened?

To make this a broader question - is there a general policy for alerting people whose comments are axed to what they did?

Failure to voice your off-topic answer in the form of a helpful acrostic poem.

If someone's new the admin usually emails them, sometimes not though. To answer your first question, email the admins.

Before posting in that thread, everyone should read this comment.

your comment didn't answer the question. in fact, a lot of comments in that thread are not going to answer the question. with a posting history like his, it's pretty obvious this thread isn't going to get great answers.

TPS, I'm confused. What does that comment have to do with the wedding ring thread?

Is this guy for real?

Wait are you kidding me? Your answer to the "where do I get a good value engagement ring?" was:

Dude, duuude,

Did you even listen to yourself in that other thread?

We talked it over, and it seems that she wants to wait until we go off to college and see if our relationship is "still the same" after a while there, before we get into anything real "serious." I don't really get it, but at least I know why she's been acting the way she is. And I support her decision.

What happened to waiting? Trying to push this is really a bad idea.
____

Are you just making a joke here or do you not understand that an answer to the where should I get a good engagement ring has to talk about engagement rings?

You have to read his earlier AskMe post for it to make sense, shmegegge.

TPS, I'm confused. What does that comment have to do with the wedding ring thread?

It has nothing to do with the thread; it has to do with the people posting who think their comment is going to prevent the poster and his gf from getting married.

That poor guy should just start over with his question anonymously.

macsigler's.

This keeps happening over and over again (marriage, fluoride, astrology, blah blah blah). Answerers really believe they're trying to be helpful. There certainly are times when rejecting the premise is the right thing to do and those comments have been allowed to stand. Is it time to give up on this kind of moderation entirely and just let people deal with it?

canine epigram: I axed your comment. It's been a busy day at both offices, and it was such a non-answer (and you not a fresh-off-the-boat newb) that emailing you to explain it didn't hit the priority list. I'm sorry if you were caught out by it, but it's really, really over-stepping the bounds of askme to hector someone about their previous question in the current one. If that wasn't clear before, there you go.

But, it sometimes works!

In a secret competition, I was awarded the right to delete three comments every seven weeks. No questions asked. This time it wasn't me, but I hear there are others. You will not find this information in the FAQ.

When someone says, "help me find a cheap engagement ring similar to this one," either do it or don't answer. It doesn't matter what the OP posted in the past; you're not his mom or brother or best friend, so answer the question or shut up.

"Hector" someone? Never heard that one before.

macsigler's other askme is still open and will be for another 11 months. Comments about the relationship will actually be on topic there.

Here's a simple chear sheet. Print it out, tape to monitor:
AskMe Cheat Sheet
  1. Read the fucking question.
  2. Answer the fucking question.
Hope this helps!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I get it now. Yes, I was clearly confused. Thanks, and sorry for being dumb.
posted by shmegegge at 2:19 PM on August 7, 2007

I don't think anyone has to worry about preventing those two from getting married. The girl will think of something else to get out of it, even if the boy "helps her understand" what kind of ring she "really" wants and takes this to the next level.

"Hector" someone? Never heard that one before.

It's a perfectly cromulent word, though upon reflection not fair to folks named Hector. Sorry, man!
posted by cortex (staff) at 2:21 PM on August 7, 2007

Are we able to discuss the thread though? Because really! WTF? Three weeks ago his girlfriend says "we're more than just really good friends," and now he's going ring shopping with her? And his response about her lack of interest in the whole thing is telling as well. And shroedinger is right, this is a really serious decision that this kid is making. They agreed to go off to college (18?) and see where it goes and then he states that he, "supports her decision." By looking for engagement rings three weeks later?! That is anything but supporting her decision and a good indication that this is not a bright idea.

thanks for fixing the link in the initial post though, whoever did that
posted by ml98tu at 2:22 PM on August 7, 2007

You're right, ml98tu:
She really isn't concerned that much with the diamonds (she said she didn't even really need a diamond ring, but I told her it's traditional and that she deserved it, and she seemed OK with that.

He's still not listening to her. She's still being passive and unclear.

I would have guessed that the robotic comment axing script just automatically deleted anything with the phrase "Dude, duuude" in it.
