Cycling challenge - 3 days left August 28, 2007 11:04 PM   Subscribe

Only 3 days left in the August cycling challenge. Wolfdog still leads JeffL, but an 85 mile lead isn't very big the way those guys are riding.

1107 miles?

I'll start in the morning. Just a quick nap, first. Ooo, and some cookies!

Oh crap I signed up at the site but haven't entered a thing! Well, my 10 - 20 miles a day for the last 2 weeks won't get me close to the eleventy million in first place.

Who are you people? If anyone is intersted in a swimming challenge for September, I'm all over it.

I haven't, uh, filled any of the ride logs for about three weeks. Will try to fix, uh, Thursday. -ish. Hopefully.

My bike is still sitting in the storage locker, with an uninflated tire. But, on the plus side, the bike computer is sitting (still in its package) on the dresser in my bedroom. One day the two will magically combine.

Ooo, I just noticed this project. Very cool. And just as my bike is (hopefully) finished with being in and out of the shop. I haven't much time, but don't rest on your laurels you people with placement in the thirties! I'm coming for YOOOUUUU!

Are we gonna continue the cycling thing in Sept? I am enjoying this, for no easily discernible reason.

Yeah, we can just continually do it on the weendure site. (the winters in the northern hemisphere will probably be pretty quiet though)

Dang! I thought I was set in 10th place. I'll just have to ride some more tonight! (Thanks for the inspriration, all!)

Fourthing the continue in September.

Winter in the northern hemisphere will be my opportunity to crush you all with my modest but steady bike commuting. ;)

Repeating myself from the weendure site, how about a metafilter-blue bike jersey?

I'm pretty much done with wearing teeshirts that have other people's names on them, but bike jerseys are still a novelty to me. I'm sure I'd buy two before I got jaded.

So, fun fact: if we can ride 846 more miles this month, Metafilter will have collectively ridden half way around the world.

Go team internet!

Indeed. Can we at least take the downhill route on the way home?

Wolfdog, you are amazing! You too, JeffL, and the others at the top. I finally entered my miles, and was feeling a little bit of an accomplishment. But DANG! You people are astounding. I'm hoping your accomplishment gives me some motivation, but right now it's just making me depressed.

Just wait till September though. Yah. Uh huh. That's right.

We could really use the help of the swimmers on this. For the watery parts.

I'm 41 - is it too late to learn?

Nope! Unless you're really phobic of the water, picking up basic swimming abilities is not tough at all and it's great exercise and kind to joints and muscles. I'd suggest it.

Let's definitely do this in September!

And if people wanna put together something to get MetaFilter cycling jerseys, I could definitely help out with that.

I think it's good for adults to know how to swim the same way it's good to have a driver's license even if you don't drive. You could help out in a pinch and you're less likely to become a liability in a weird bad situation. You can take a class with the Red Cross for free or cheap and the first level is really getting used to the water. Unlike learning to swim from your folks or a friend, the Red Cross classes are really focussed on getting you comfy with the water and bring proficient with water skills, there's no toss you in and see if you float nonsense. It's all "look how good you're doing, now let's try this new thing..."

Men, especially men of medium or slim builds can have a hard time with swimming initially because you don't have a lot of body fat and you SINK. If you're heavier at least you'll float so it can be easier to get basic skills down. I've been doing lifeguard trainin all week so Im a little "rah rah pool!" right now, but Id encourage you to find and take a class.

Alright JeffL, you're pissing me off now. It's not enough that you humiliate us mere mortals by biking over a 1000 miles this month? Now you want to learn swimming too? What are you gonna do, swim across the /big body of water near you/ on your Friday lunch break?

Oh cripes. It's the last day, and weendure is down.

Chuckles, I don't remember where we stood last night in our race for third, but I did 9.26 miles this morning.

:)

I logged about 6km last night, and was ahead by ~2miles.. I just did 53.22km, and I feel completely dead! And, I have to go out revising (door to door check of eligible voters) tonight for 4-5 hours, ARGH! If I can still roll after that.. Well..

Regardless of how we make out for third, I feel pretty good about passing 800miles for the month. My prediction beforehand was about half of that :)

That would have been blink worthy, except a couple of guys who shall remain nameless went a little farther..

Thanks for your work on this, Chuckles. I'll have to get out there today and start September with a few miles on a non-work day.

Thanks for keeping us updated, Chuckles, and kudos to yourself and hydrophonic for providing a furious finish to the race for third.

Thanks for posting this again Chuckles!

Dang! If only I had done those 35 miles like I wanted on Wednesday, I would have stayed in 10th place. Oh well, this is good incentive for September!

It would be awesome if we could discover some more millennial riders in September!

Sooo, 34 miles a day would give me 1000 miles for this month.

Hmmmm... It's certainly physically doable. I'll be out of town for a week though. Otherwise, just adding an extra 14 miles after work would do it.

Oops I meant 24 miles.

Ok then, forget it, I quit. ;)
