Notes on the 30th anniversary of the death of Marc Bolan....

So, today is the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Marc Bolan of T. Rex fame. It's also the fifth anniversary of this post. Had it been posted today, it would almost certainly include some YouTube links, such as 20th Century Boy, Telegram Sam, Jeepster, Hot Love, Children of the Revolution, Ride A White Swan, Solid Gold Easy Action, Metal Guru, and of course Bang A Gong (Get It On). There'd probably be a reference to a DVD release of Born To Boogie, Ringo Starr's documentary about T. Rex. Somebody might've chipped in a link to the Power Station cover of Bang A Gong; someone might've even posted Louis XIV's Letter To Dominique as a comment on T. Rex's enduring influence.

So, that said, how do you know when to FPP an update to another, closed, FPP versus slapping it on the gray?

And yes, this comprises the ruins of a posting I had been working on until I checked the MeFi archives, but I mean my question sincerely. It's also my gift to other T. Rex fans.

I think this goes on the blue, myself. It's not a double, it's a new post about another anniversary, with entirely different links.

I dunno.

Trivia: The woman driving the car in the accident that killed Bolan, was his girlfriend Gloria Jones, who did the original version of "Tainted Love," which was later ruined by Soft Cell.

I think it would be absolutely fine to make this a FPP, perhaps with a (previously) link at the end to the earlier post. Do it already.

...the original version of "Tainted Love," which was later ruined by Soft Cell.

You misspelt "made awesome".

Seems like decent material for a post to the Blue to me.

No, ruined. I despise synthpop with the passion of a thousand suns. And that's a particularly egregious case of ruining a fine, soulful R&B number with annoying keyboards and fey vocals. It was music like that that made me into a metalhead and then a classic rock and punk fan.

And I hate classic rock and metal like it's made of Hitler! Yaaay!

Trust me Gloria Jones' version is better. I'd reather hear some blues or funky old soul..;>

(and I realize that Marc Bolan had fey vocals as well, but his music was all Sonesy guitar-grit. It's the contrast that made it work. Hell, the guy namechecks Chuck berry in his biggest hit. He was all about the rockin').

Everyone should take a moment to say "hubcap diamond star halo." It just rolls off the tongue so well.

I just wish I drove a Rolls-Royce, cause it'd be good for my voice.

MeTa isn't really the place to put "tester" posts. Put this on the blue.
