Jessamyn, meet Vancouver. October 1, 2007 3:44 PM   Subscribe

All the way from the woods of Vermont! One night only!! Jessamyn, live in Vancouver!!!

Madame Librarian will be in our rainy city next Thursday, October 11th, so let's have a meetup. I'm thinking the Nelson Street Café, 655 Nelson Street, because 1) we've met there before, 2) they have beer and food and 3) it's not too far from where she's staying.

Sorry, Portland. This is Vancouver, B.C.

This an exclusive lower mainland appearance, by the way.

I'll be giving at talk at Access 2007, flying in on the 10th and out on the 12th otherwise we'd have more flexibility. Anyone in Vancouver who has free time and a car, or who is going to the conference in Victoria, please let me know. I'm planning on taking the seaplane or the bus from point A to point B but I'd love to not have to (and I have travel funding, somewhat).

Ooh, say hi to my hometown, sister, sorry I can't be there. Break a leg.

Dammit, this would be second time I've had to entertain out of town guests when a meetup was happening. I had to skip it last time. This time I'll try to drag my friend along but who knows. I will show up to one of these things eventually...

Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

Does that mean I have to take their picture? This is all so confusing.

So a Victoria meetup is possible, or will you be too busy at the conference?
posted by Rumple at 6:09 PM on October 1, 2007

My plan is get to Vancouver, get to Victoria the evening of the 10th, give talk the next morning, get on bus/plane back to Vancouver. So I won't be in Victoria very long at all. If I'm not stressed too much about my talk and people want to get together at the hotel bar, cool. Otherwise I just won't be there very long.

ooo boourns, I have a meeting that evening at 6pm, but I can join y'all later after you're all well lubricated.
posted by stray at 6:16 PM on October 1, 2007

Plus, I am sure there are all those cool librarians to hang out with. But shoot me an email if it looks good and you'll drink for free!

I think it's awfully cruel to kidnap jessamyn and take her to Canada of all places. Nobody deserves this and she's given enough as is. I think you should let jessamyn go, time, and take it easy on the exclamation marks.

Jess, aren't you also doing the Keynote on the night of the 10th, or is the opening keynote on the morning of the 11th?
posted by Razzle Bathbone at 7:58 PM on October 1, 2007

For those in Victoria or going to Access, the opening night receptions (which hopefully Jessamyn will be able to make) is at Swans. Maybe some sort of Mefi meetup can be conducted on the side?
posted by Razzle Bathbone at 8:01 PM on October 1, 2007

The keynote is on the morning of the 11th or I am in very big trouble. My flight gets in at 2 or something and then I will wend my way to Victoria.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 8:06 PM on October 1, 2007

You can take a seaplane (Harbour Air, West Coast Air) to Victoria from Vancouver Airport's South Terminal. There should be a shuttle bus from the main Vancouver terminal. The seaplane terminal in Victoria Harbour should be close to Access.
posted by KokuRyu at 8:26 PM on October 1, 2007

You are right about the Keynote being on the 11th. The program page was not that clear originally and it made it sound like the Keynote was at the welcoming session on the 10th. I thought you were on the original list of speakers for the 'How to Skin an OPAC' preconference session?

I should be able to make it.

Noo! The one night that I won't be able to go. I'll try to make it if possible.

Ooh, I can make it, kinda. VIFF is fully on and I have a 9:30 viewing but I can mix and mingle for a bit depending on what time everything starts at.

Any other mefi librarians going to be at Access 2007 besides Jessamyn and myself?

I guess that's up to you. You're the one who has to get back here from Victoria that day.

I might be able to make it, depending on the starting time (and if work doesn't suck too hard).

How long might the meetup last? A friend of mine, who's teaching a class that evening at the UBC Library School would love to come along, but it wouldn't be until later.... Jessamyn, she says she met you in New York once but you might not remember.

Jessamyn, she says she met you in New York once but you might not remember.

I have met many people in New York and I may have met her but without more information it's impossible to tell. The meetup will start at 7, it's a decent guess that it will go until at least 10. I may have to bail on drinks tomorrow night though, fyi.

Okay I arrived and am exhausted, anyone up for a beer in the hotel bar this evening?

I'll be at the meetup tonight, though probably an hour late or so. See you all there!

Yeah, I suppose it's just possible that there's more than one librarian that you might have met in New York. D'oh.

I'll be there tonight, anyway.

Heading over there now, I'm in the orange sweater as per usual.

Great meetup. I have now acheived a MetaFilter trifecta: meeting mathowie, cortex and, now, jessamyn (my new favourite mod).

I won't be showing you any of my photos because they all sucked. I hope seawallrunner or juvenal had better luck.
posted by timeistight at 11:04 PM on October 11, 2007

what a cool evening! awesome to meet you jessamyn !!

great people, great conversation, some good gossip and yummy food and beer !

I have no photos either - they are all out of focus, yadda.

So juvenal - over to you :)

My photos sucked, but I do have one of jessamyn throwing down some gang signs, which is amusing despite being a horribly bad photo. Will post either sometime later tonight or tomorrow.

Apologies, these photos are really terrible, but since no one else is posting any, I might as well:

random assortment of people
L-->R: myopicman, 2 non-mefites, jokeefe(?), jessamyn , an obscured heeraldo, seawallrunner

jessamyn reprahzentin'

not photo-ed, but also present: timeistight, russilwvong, stray, sanitycheck

I assumed YOU GUYS were taking photos? I have one that isn't a dark neon blur but it does get most of heeeraldo's shoutouts, I think.

Also, thanks for a nice evening, I was tired after a lot of travel and librarianing it was great ot have a few tasty beers and hear Canadia stories.

How's DaShiv meetup travel budget requisition coming along?

I didn't think I'd be able to make it; I'm glad I was able to drop by, meet jessamyn, chat with a few Vancouver MeFites. timeistight, thanks for organizing!

See, that's what you and seawallrunner get for being too cool to use a flash, what with your fancypants cameras and all. Point n click FTW.

Man, in many ways, I wish didn't have to leave so early. It was a jolly night out and good to put names to faces. A pleasant sort that will soundly chide anyone that deserves it.

Is there still a rusted-out car waiting for me in Vermont?

Yes. How are your sheetrocking skills? And how was the movie?
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 11:32 PM on October 12, 2007

How are your sheetrocking skills?

Uh, rocks come from sheets? I thought rocks come from cans that were placed there by a man in a factory downtown.

Sadly, my forte lies more in the destructive arts, and tarring driveways, so anything involving installing things carefully is best left to professionals over well-intentioned me.

And how was the movie?

My Winnipeg was delightfully deranged. Effigy2000's post on the history of Winnipeg gives a superset of the content from that bizarre city, but Guy Maddin really goes over the top with re-enactments of his family life along with his silent movie flair.

There I go confusing French-Candians and Finnish-Canadians again. Since VTIFF and VIFF were at the same time, I'll have to hunt down My Winnipeg some other time; glad it was good. Turns out I think we know the same person in Thunder Bay.
