Followup FPPs?

A couple of times this week I've run across links that had significant new information on stories that made the Blue recently enough to still be active. By themselves they don't feel meaty enough to merit a new FPP, but if I just tack them at the end of the old FPP it feels like wasted effort that nobody's likely to see.

For reference, here's the first story: falafelfilter: FBI data mining bad ideas & I tried posting the new links here.

And for the the second story, Meet the FEMA, I found this photo of the incident.

So to make a short story long, what guidelines should I use in figuring out how (or if at all) to bring these sorts of things to the attention of the Hive?

Generally, unless it's a really big (or for some reason really Metafilter-big) deal, it probably doesn't need a Metatalk followup. Posting new info into open threads is the way to go when in doubt.

Additionally, we've tweaked the Recent Activity page to search back a full 30 days on threads (and much longer than that on AskMe threads specifically), so anyone who has commented in said thread will see your updates if they use Recent Activity.

Which they totally should, because it's awesome like that.

Anybody that's been active in those threads will see those pop up in their recent activity screen. I imagine your additions have been seen by those who are interested, even if it doesn't lead to continued commenting.

What's the process for closing out threads to new comments? Do they close out automatically based on post date, last comment date, or is it a manual process?

With the exception of Metatalk, there is no manual "close thread" tool; threads on the blue and the grey close exactly 30 days from creation; AskMe threads close after a year.

I know what you mean. I've always had the feeling that threads are effectively dead after just a few days, but I don't know how many people use Recenty Activity, so maybe that's changed.

Um, didn't someone suggest that recent activity should show up from posts you favorited? This is why. I don't always have something useful to contribute to a discussion, but getting the last 10 comments would still be cool.

Of course this does not actual apply to me, since I comment even when I don't have something useful to contribute.
