MeFi Mall...who's with me? November 26, 2007 8:31 AM   Subscribe

Tis the season...to shop Mefi? In this post, MadamJuJuJive posits an idea for us to have a Shop Mefi page for the holidays. I like the idea a lot, and not just because she pimped out my soap company. I would love to buy some of the art, music, photography and other goodies that fellow Mefites are making. So, how hard would it be to make a MeFi Mall?

It wouldn't be too hard. I guess everyone would have to list their shops here and I could make a page of all of them and post that in a few days.

Capitalist swine! Your counter-revolutionary proposal is a foul rejection of the principle on which MeFi was founded: "from each according to his ability, to each according to her needs".

No, we'll have no "mall" here, thank you – virtual or otherwise! Instead, the moderators of the MeFi Politburo should determine a 12-day plan for the People's Joyful Socialist Festivities of Harvest End, wherein they distribute the necessary geese-a-laying and maids-a-milking to our neediest comrades. And if five golden rings are requisitioned as necessary for the Deputies' personal use, who are YOU to complain, you class traitor? Put THAT shit in your stocking, Yankee.

I do op-art posters, prints and cards, as well as rather affordable custom graphic design - with a great deal of real-world experience in logo design.

Art prints range from a massive 5x5 foot full-color outputs down to postcards, and in between, on a variety of substrates including synthetic papers or cast vinyl.

I don't have a store, really, as most of my sales are word-of-mouth, and lately I seem to be doing mostly custom 1-off work for clients. (Some older work can be seen at my, ugh, myspace page.)

I'm probably one of only a few "digital" artists who includes the vector source file as well as full rights of reproduction, facilitating as best I can the true ownership of the design.

Yes, I can design or modify a poster to match your couch.

No. The last time I got suckered into buying one of his so-called blessings it rained talking zombie-meat for a week straight.

Dogs wouldn't eat it. Rats, neither. You try telling me you'd throw a slab of talking, half-undead putrified meat on the grill and eat it. Hell, most folks couldn't even look at the damn stuff. Categories..

First, let me be clear, I hate the categories I've come up with. In addition, there are some executive decisions needed.. Here is a preliminary list, note that I've left some obvious outliers to help spur some discussion:
books, cafepress, calendars, cooking, erotica/fetish, hobby electronics, musical instruments, jewelry, knitting, magazines, massage, recorded music, pets, prints, programming, soap, performance art accessories, stickers, travel, t-shirts
Prints includes art prints and photography, it could include calendars too. Performance art accessories could include musical instruments (and fetish gear :P). We could do crafts and hobbies, and stick the knitters and I in there. Massage, programming, graphic design (not in the list, but something included in the descriptions) are all services. And then there are the cafepress sites. Do you call those apparel, and then include the t-shirt sites, or maybe call them gifts. I called them cafepress above because the web savvy among us know what kind of item to expect, but that kind of misses the point I think.. I mean, it is the art put on the items that makes it interesting, so a cafepress category isn't exactly good marketing.

On top of defining categories, there are users who will have a good claim for being in more than one. Magazines & t-shirts, for example, and magazines & travel. I'm thinking two categories maximum, just to keep the listing from getting spamy (maybe even limit it to one).

Anyway, I've done some initial work, so regenerating the page into categories will be fairly straightforward. Meanwhile, the categories need to be established, I'm going to think about that for a while longer, and feedback is welcome.

I've done some initial work, so regenerating the page into categories will be fairly straightforward. Meanwhile, the categories need to be established, I'm going to think about that for a while longer, and feedback is welcome.

There are roughly 40-50 entries on that page. A good category breakdown would have roughly 5-6 categories as I see it. Tags, while nifty are really not an option here. I'm not sure what you mean by "regenerating the page" but I typed it all by hand, outside of the general template header/footer stuff, so someone else can retype it and put it in categories, or leave it as is, or alphabetize it. Everything between the [ul] and [/ul] can be copied, resorted, cut, pasted and sent to me if you want. Please don't send it over gmail because it makes the HTML all weird, putting it online so I can grab it would be best.

if it's not too late (and if i don't only deserve coal in my stocking this year), i've got this:

Cloud 13 Records: We sell guilt-free independent music from emerging artists whose styles range from lo-fi pop to big-production British-invasion-era psychedelic.

XQUZYPHYR, I edited your punctuation, I hope you don't mind. This is what your entry says on my copy of the page (may not be live for a while, depending on when jessamyn gets around to it):
I'm a cartoonist, and I have a new book out. And, I've been told by many already that it is in fact quite good and makes a lovely Christmas gift.
I guess I removed all the self-deprecation, which is bad, but those question marks just looked too weird.

If you want it changed back, I'm sure that can be arranged somehow :P

Late to the party. I emailed jessamyn a bit back but now see that the email-jessamyn-to-get-added message is gone (too much demand to handle?). Here's my entry for the next revision if someone's still keeping the list up to date:
I sell photo prints through my my photoblog. I'll also happily mail anyone nice copies of my self-published collection of poetry (pdf) for the cost of shipping (email me).
(Hope the double-whammy doesn't break the categorization idea. Feel free to edit or split the above as necessary.)

I'm out of the country until the 14th and have limited time to actually work on this. I can add rafter and XQUZYPHYR's entries.

I'm a lingerie blogger-turned designer who has just launched our first product, a silk lingerie travel bag for "Dirty" and "Clean" knickers. It's 100% silk, limited collection, and is as sexy as the lingerie that goes into it. We think it's a great gift for women who love lingerie!

I'm self publishing my first novel - 12 Cups of Coffee thru lulu.com.

A quote about the book: "You want a good read? Want to be parachuted into a fast-paced, knowing-laugh- ladden world of hard-edged software sales and empty nights? 12 Cups of Coffee delivers the jolt that wakes its protagonist (and the reader) from his quirky nightmare of international business travel and just-business friendships. Funny and fearlessly self-reflective, the book perks along and makes readers thirsty for more."

Making sense of life, one espresso at a time.
