I was just trying out some quick CF hack. It's checking out many people have hit the site in the past ten minutes. I wonder a) how high it would go mid-day on a moderately busy day and b) how much additional processing it will take up to keep the count going.
If I see a noticeable lag tomorrow afternoon, I'll ax it.

Yay! I got my pony from 6 months ago! And I'm gonna ride it All Night Long!
Thanks Matt - although I do understand that my request and the actual implementation are completely unrelated.

gleuschk: I know you're a mathematician and all, but will you concede that there's something insanely addictive about checking the number of online members and trying to work out some pattern? How would one go about factoring in the several time zones involved? It's approaching 400 right now. It's 18:37 here in GMT Portugal and UK, 13:37 EST, 10:37 PST...so just about everyone is at work, i.e. on MeFi! Will it get better?
I hope Matt never takes the counter away!

You realize of course that, if true, this will skew the results. We'll need two figures: # of members actually reading the site, and # of members hitting refresh just to see how many members are reading the site....

Of course. The only thing worse is checking the site statistics for your blog (if you were the kind of person who obsessively did that, which I'm absolutely not, no way, huh-uh, never, but thanks to the 3 of you who came by yesterday from .mil IPs).
What a nifty toy, Matt.
