Video buttons. Are. Awesome. Are they new?

OMG NO ACCDENTL VID PLYNG!!11!

OK, am I seeing things, or are these video buttons new? Have they always been there and I somehow missed them, or this is just the awesomeness I think it is?!

(as noticed in the Gar-discussion link.)

Video buttons? You mean the onsite youtube player? Cuz that's been around for a while.

And can be enabled/disabled on your profile customization page.

yeah we've had them since... and you can turn them on/off by...

oh I guess you know all that. Yeah no, they're not new.

They are nice because when someone posts youboob you can see at a glance without having to hover over the link first.
posted by caddis at 8:56 PM on December 2, 2007

It's very nice they're working correctly now.

Huh. Well HAYELL I never knew about that. Never even noticed it in prefs, either. Of course, I stay away from my prefs page, because my mouse is drawn magnetically to the Close Your Account link.

I see the icons, and when I click on them, the site goes gray and a window pops up. I can hear the sound of the video playing, but no video. ???

Huh. I just noticed that mine got turned off. Did they get reset during the big profile page overhaul?
posted by roll truck roll at 9:45 PM on December 2, 2007

don't think so, roll truck roll. Mine worked throughout.

I'd just like to note my favorite feature, being able to right-click on the video-icon, select open link in new tab and have it open in an adfree space but being still able to read the comments while it loads. I know it's not groundbreaking, but I like it anyway.

As long as we're on the topic, huge thanks and much appreciation for recently making this doohickie work in the [more inside] portion of posts (on behalf of those of us who, ahem, occasionally post youboob links). Woo!

tellurian has to buy carsonb a soda. I'm enforcing this.

Roll Truck Roll, I think you might be right. I noticed they had disappeared for me a while ago but thought nothing of it and assumed they'd been disabled for some reason. When I logged out and back in after the overhaul there they were again. I don't recall turning them off, wouldn't have had any reason to, but it's nice to see them back even if they never went away.

I'm not saying there's a conspiracy but here's a guy on YouTube explaining why Matt possibly added the youtube player, what else he promised as part of YouGoog Bundling and the financial incentives he gets for doing it.

I'd like to hear someone explain what's happening to pravit, because it happens to me too. And seanyboy, I really, really hope that's a link to Morrissey or something and not what I think it is.

Damn, I'm going to have to check now.

In light of that, it's unlikely that this is a feature Matt is ever going to give up, even if some of those accounts with low numbers do sometimes feel that he's feel that he's let them down and deserted them.

Thirding Pravit and GeckoDundee, the same thing happens to me.
posted by headspace at 5:54 AM on December 3, 2007

Ignore PeterMcDermott, once you've followed that youtube link (think animated goatse with audio), you will find that there isn't enough bleach in the world to fix it.

But I might add that I can see some inline you tube videos. Maybe it's an adblock thing, which would be ironic, given the nature of the feature.

I wouldn't mind if linking to Morrissey becomes the new rickrolling.

I haven't used them for a while, because it seems to be a crapshoot whether or not the video actually loads. Seems like half the time the box pops up, and I get audio but no video.

Since the thread below is closed, I just want to note my disappointment in the shut-down of what likely would have been a flameout of epic proportions. For shame, cortex!
posted by brain_drain at 7:25 AM on December 3, 2007

I've seen that "audio, no picture" problem sometimes too. A hard refresh has generally fixed it. Not sure why it happens, exactly.

OK, they must have somehow been turned off for me from the get go, but recently been reset to "on". But, yes, all this time I was just hovering over links, and looking in the info bar below to see if it was a video for me to skip over/save for later, etc. So, I'm quite pleased!

Well, no. We were SILENCED. BY THE MAN. I bet he'll close this thread too! Run! Run, or be silently deleted! aahhh--

No, no no - The Man is merely protecting us from ourselves. You know how you people get when you smell the blood of an aggrieved newby - we don't want to have to tie languagehat down again like last time, do we now? Really, it's for the best.

Nikita, you may be interested to learn that, in other recent news, some scientistic dude has discovered incontrovertible evidence of something that looks like a faked-up Yeti footprint.
