OLPC unboxing photos and reviews in The Blue okay? December 8, 2007 4:13 PM   Subscribe

There has been some interest expressed in hearing directly from MetaFilter members as they receive their OLPC laptops. Would a front page post be the appropriate forum? I'm concerned it would be viewed as self-linking.

For example, if I were to link to a Flickr photo set of snaps I'd taken while opening the laptop, and other members were to link to their own photosets.

why not a MeTa thread?

I think MeTa is the most appropriate place for this. I've got an XO on the way as well (no ETA yet), and I'd be happy to share here.

Any MeFites played around with developing applications for it yet? I'm still trying to get a box set up to run the emulator, and would love to hear about others' experiences.

To answer the underlying question: yes, a link to a Flickr set you made would very much be viewed as self-linking.

I'd say just add it as a link in the existing discussion. We're not so madly obsessed with gadgets there that five photos of someone taking a computer out of a box is that interesting. For people into that sort of thing, there's engadget and gizmodo who will certainly do that.

Also, the person asked about a review, not just photos of taking it out of the box. Maybe use it for a month or two and when the topic comes up in Ask MeFi, answer with a review?

Have the speed issues been fixed? The early version I had access to was painfully slow.

Yeah, a MeTa thread sounds about right. Now...

I'm not in the US or Canada. As a computer lover I'm dying to get a hands on with one of these laptops. I'm not able to participate in the buy one give one program because of my location. If anyone is willing to help me out (which would mean giving a delivery address and posting on the laptop to Ireland when it arrives - I have a paypal account and can pay it once i add the delivery address) I'll pay the shipping cost to Ireland (and any additional costs - within reason) and match that cost for a charity of your choice. My email is where you'd expect it to be

Once I've had my fun I'll donate the laptop to the school my friend teaches at.

Excellent. This question's been bugging me since the last OLPC thread. Thanks for the help.

I'm working on an isketch/pictionary game.

I've already played with one for a while. I work for a magazine, and we got one in to review. Tom Coates wrote the revieww, and it's in the edition that's coming out now.

Do I win?

Mine just arrived, I'm charging up it battery now. If anyone has questions, send me mail, or if somebody else opens a thread I'll participate.
