'Tis the season for secrets December 11, 2007 12:42 PM   Subscribe

I am looking for a fellow MeFite who is both a Daft Punk fan and proficient with (preferably) Fruity Loops and/or Reason. I'm working on a top secret project that I'd like to collaborate with someone on. Who will bite?

I'm not sure who will bite, but I bet you'll be more likely to get a bite, and less likely to get bitten if you fish around in Projects rather than MetaTalk.

Oddly enough, this is the weirdest thing I have ever heard of.

Fruity Loops? Reason? What the hell is wrong with you? Haven't you heard of Ableton?

I am both a Daft Punk fan and a DJ and I'm good with Reason. Don't happen to have a copy of it currently, but I do have Ableton and Logic installed.

What's up?

Also, before you run off trying to "remix" Daft Punk, you are aware that every single riff, bassline and hook tha Daft Punk uses is already stolen, right?

Not just sampled, were talking about entire songs and phrases just outright ripped the fuck off. Blantantly.

Granted, I still like the robots in question, but they're goddamn thieves.

They aren't thieves if they pay for them :)

I fit the bill, although I agree that this is better in Projects.

I use Reason and Cubase only, though.

Also, I subscribe more to the German electronic music style (less sampling, more synth'ing) vs Daft Punk's blatently French method. In any case, mefimail me.

Yeah, loquacious, they both credit the original artists and pay them royalties.

"Blatantly French". That amuses me for some reason.

I have a DJ gig coming up where I was debating just playing Daft Punk Remixes for the duration. I could probably just play an hours worth of Harder, Better, Faster Stronger remixes. I also thought about just playing a 4 bar loop of Around The World over and over again until people either left the dance floor or were driven mad.

I could get into Ableton. To be honest my music-making skills are still budding, but I know what I like. Floops was a good place to start.

I don't want to reveal too much about my plan, but I can tell you know it doesn't involve remixing Daft Punk. I know they use samples extensively, and this project involves samples, so if you feel bad about that, you probably won't be much help.

Also, I'm French, so watch out ;)

Now I know why people look at me weird when I start ranting about HTML5 working drafts and Ogg Vorbis.

Hm, really? The first time I ever figured out their songs were largely composed of other peoples songs is when there was a post here about it. Were they credited on the cd sleaves? I guess I never really looked.

I'm a drooling fanboy for my favorite robots, and possess Reason + Live + moderate skillz with each.

As others have pointed out they credit + clear samples, but on top of that let us not forget:

99.9% (maybe more) of everything they've ever sampled kinda sucks, and they turn shit into perfect disco gold.

My demo-for-getting-DJ-work mixes contain my two favorite Daft Punk tricks, but I feel weird about linking them.

Or explaining (because of course, explaining takes all the fun out of it).

So, uh. Check out this content-free comment, eh?

I don't feel wierd about linking mine-- it's in my website in my profile -- Serious Business has a few Daft Punk Remixes in it :)

Two of my good friends played Studio B last Saturday dressed up as Daft Punk and DJ'ed (almost) exclusively their tunes. It was pretty sweet.

Actually, yeah.

I forgot my (recently mostly-demolished) website is linked in my profile. You will find the two mixes there. In the first one, you'll want to skip in about 24 minutes. The Daft Punk-related LOLZ in the 60-minute one are right at the start.

yeti: Whoa, your friends are Faux Punk? I almost went to that.

I realize the above was more of a MeMail type of comment since no one cares about my weekend hypotheticals and it adds nothing to this discussion. I would like to sincerely apologize...and I'm not making it any better by appending this follow-up, but I figured I already made an ass of myself...

I think I've got my victim, thanks for the help guys.

Sorry, kepano, I came off a little crabby. I support all remixing and blending and experimentation of music.

could probably just play an hours worth of Harder, Better, Faster Stronger remixes. I also thought about just playing a 4 bar loop of Around The World over and over again until people either left the dance floor or were driven mad.

There's a rather excellent open air bootleg of the Coachella show last year where they pretty much do exactly that for the first bits. And people do indeed go crazy nuts.

The list of MetaFilter Music Collaborators on Ye Olde Wiki makes for good readin'.

At this point, why not just buy the flawless Alive 2007 disc (making sure to get the version with the encore)?
