Per the iPhone webclip icon feature that came out yesterday, if you add any mefi sites to your iPhone home screen, you'll now get some fancy matching icons.

Excellent. Now I need to do that for work....

Can you star in a black background video showing us how to do it?

Thanks. I was waiting for one more reason to buy an iPhone.

Excellent. I need to go to AskMe and find out how to add Mefi to my home screen, now. I have it bookmarked in Safari on the iphone, of course, but I'm still learning how to use this thing!

Oh, duh! Thanks for the link, ALongDecember.

Awesome!! Ask was the first site I 'webclipped' after my update last night. I'll go re-clip and get the cool icons!!

Thanks!!

Ok. This news has made me way too happy. I need a MeFi intervention.

But my Springboard sure is pretty!!

That is niceness. Thanks. Much better looking than the screen grabs of twitter and google reader I have now.

Those iPhone things are pretty snazzy.

Cool. But judging by that photo, not even #1 wants to go to Projects.

Do I have to upgrade my firmware for this? I just jailbroke my phone before the newest release.

I'm going to cover my iPhone home screen in 57x57 boobies.

Sexay! Can't wait for a jailbreak of the new FW. Still running 1.0.2.

OK goddamn it is it "MetaFilter" like in the logo and the nav menus or "Metafilter" like in the page title? I LIKE THINGS JUST SO.

vjarmy.com is mefi's own remy, for those interested

Yeah, but when are you going to support this feature for lynx?
posted by cortex (staff) at 12:28 PM on January 16, 2008

Clearly it's MetaFilter, and the page title is wrong. Bad page title!

Huzzah!

I was probably one of the many that emailed the link to Matt yesterday (didn't know if it deserved a full metatalk pony post).

The cool part is, since you can actually specific on a each webpage what image to use for the thumbnail, so someday it could grab a users profile pic and use that as the badge if they were linking to their personal favorites page. etc. Of course some coder could have it put the mefi badge over their pic also.

or if you wanted to stalk a MeFi celebrity's posting history from the road.

I tried, but the webpage for those folks requires javascript support.

Haha this is fab. Got iPhone today, added MeFi to Home Screen, thought "hey that looks neat..." and now I know why. Yay!

For what it's worth, this guy recommends using 158x158 for less blurry icons.

Update
After further testing and with the help of my readers we've determined the sweet spot for webclip icons is 60x60 pixels. Thanks everyone!

Geez, why does Apple make people experiment to find out stuff that just shoulda been documented in the first place?
posted by smackfu at 9:41 AM on January 17, 2008

It was documented. Unfortunately, it was apparently documented wrong.

It happens. File a bug! :)

I certainly wish Apple had provided some better guidelines - the weirdness about the crop was driving me up the wall. But, I suppose it wouldn't be a truly Apple thing if it wasn't hazily specified.
