I don't want to sign up for a youtube account January 20, 2008 11:05 PM   Subscribe

I don't want to sign up for a youtube account.

While I'm sure this is a lovely video, I have no interest in opening yet another internet account just to watch it. As such, this post is fairly inaccessible.

The reason this is a MeTa instead of a flag-and-move-on is that I'm not sure whether youtube has become so ubiquitous that I just need to get over it and sign up for an account.

What say ye, mefites?

You can sign in with Google, if you have that. I wouldn't have signed up to create yet another account, but since I have Google already, I said what the hey.

Overall, youtube doesn't require sign up, so it's no problem to post it. In this case ('cause there's a vag) it's an adult video which requires a birthdate verification. It's stupid, and a drag, but unless you're interested in this cool birth video, I don't think there are too many occasions where you'd need to sign up to see a mefi link (because generally, you only need the sign-in for porn).

OK, which one of us left this comment on the youtube video:

This video shouldn't be allowed on YouTube because kids will see it and it glamorizes vaginas and makes people think they're OK.

I'm pretty sure this bypass of YouTube's age verification still works; notice the difference between the first URL (the one used in the front page post) and the second:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aht0HqI7GSw
http://www.youtube.com/v/Aht0HqI7GSw

Just replace the "/watch?v=" with "/v/". I just logged out of YouTube, clicked the 2nd link and saw the video without any age verification.

We can therefore assume the only reason you would do that would be to troll the post afterwards with tubgirl commentary.

At the risk of dragging this thread back onto the topic I started it for, the post in question violates this guideline. Or maybe it doesn't. Or maybe it does and nobody but me gives a crap.

I'm leaning towards the last option at this point, but I thought I'd give it one more try.

I'm with you in theory, tkolar, but workarounds for NYT registrations and the like have been part of the site for a long time. Maybe someone could start a "metafilter" account at YouTube that any of us could use if we didn't want to register. Or, we could just spread around that little bypass operation I mentioned above. :)

As a defense of your trolling, you now claim ignorance of how babies are born. Which is strange and fascinating and explains much about your two-year-old-like behavior. Functionally incapable of flagging a post or bringing your concerns to Metatalk, you instead deliberately draw an offensive simile with a notably obscene record of coprophilia. Not much more to say, really, but that you are fooling no one but yourself.

Not ideal, but not the end of the world, either -- and it's not as if a 13 year old wouldn't be capable of having an email address and claiming to be 107, too, so I'm not so clear on what this age "verification" is supposed to accomplish (besides protecting the tender eyes of Tex).

As a TubGirl™ scholar from way back, I'm thoroughly convinced that what we are seeing is, in fact, butterscotch pudding. Without conclusive DNA testing and a matching sample, I'm not 100% on this but then again, in the world of science, who really is?

So, to sum up:

1. We don't get many age-restricted videos posted to the front page, so it's probably not a big deal either way. But:

2. There are a number of ways you can deal with the issue of an age-verified video:

- You can watch the mefi-embedded version without an issue (on the Customize Metafilter page, check the "Display YouTube Video inline?" box); just click (or right-click) on the inline icon.
- You can hack the url by replacing "/watch?v=" with "/v/" to get an unverified fullscreen version
- You can use bugmenot to borrow a login.
- You can expedite account creation using your google/gmail account (click "logging in" and then "Login with your Google account");
- You could just plain old sign up and use a throwaway address and made up info.

That's about it. Tex, BP: next time take that shit to email, for fuck's sake.
