Hmm, looks like it's been canceled. Bummer.

Sad and slightly bizarre Gorilla Suit Day news from Mark Evanier, which explains why that link from last year isn't working:

Important-Type Announcement

The past few years, this weblog has celebrated the work of a brilliant cartoonist named Don Martin by noting his very funny holiday, National Gorilla Suit Day. I've encouraged you to remember the late Mr. Martin and his work and now I'm in the odd position of...well, not discouraging you but just announcing that Don's widow has asked me not to mention him or his holiday and to delete all past mentions of both. I don't fully understand why but I still have (and will always have) the greatest respect for the man...so I've done as she asks...

Weird, huh? Luckily he left up last year's report about sending a gorilla-gram to the Mad offices.

"So you're telling me I wore this thing to work for nothing?!"

Not nothing. At the end of the day, you still got to wear a gorilla suit.

Are these comments all really hot and sexy and suggestive or is it just me?

The loudest argument I've ever gotten into with my best friend was about gorilla suits.

Him: So I had to get a monkey suit for this shoot we were doing.

Me: A monkey suit?

Him: Yeah, it was like a King Kong bit or something. So like, this big black monkey suit. So I walk into the costume shop, and I ask the woman behind the counter, "Do you guys have any monkey suits?" And she thinks about it, and she says, no they don't. I'm like, "None? None at all? Are they all rented right now or something?" And she's like, "Sorry, no. We just don't carry monkey suits." And I'm like, "All right." And then, just as I'm walking out the door, I turn around, and ask, kind of as a joke, "Hey, you don't have any gorilla suits, do you?" And she goes, "Oh, yeah, we have five of them." Can you believe that? What kind of asshole does that? I was just about to leave!

Me: SHE WAS SO FUCKING RIGHT, THEY ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT

Him: Wait, so if someone came up to you and asked for a monke-

Me: YOU ARE FUCKING WRONG

This thread has given me another reason to love Greg Nog.

And that's simply marvelous.

Interesting! You know, it seems to me that Don Martin hasn't gotten the press that he deserves. Not that he's a complete unknown, but he doesn't seem to have been as canonized as Charles Schulz or Jack Kirby. I just chalked it up to different tastes, but now I wonder if his widow has something to do with it.

A boxed 2-volume hardcover set of his complete works from Mad ain't chopped liver (if not constituting being as canonized as Kirby and Schulz, as you note.)

You know, there's this (now defunct) Gorilla Suit Day, and a bunch of yuppies on Facebook had New Yorkers going around in their underwear recently, but what does MeFi have?

I have proposed a Mefi holiday before. Now we just need a date and a dress code!

Well, there's Elephant Day... October 8. Dress, I guess, like an elephant.

Dress code? I suggest green polos with popped collars.

Gorilla suit? Harumph. Damn furries are always looking for an excuse.

An excuse to beat the shit out of non-gorilla suit wearing people, maybe.

Wouldn't it be easier if we just took over National Librarian Day or National Beard Month? My guess is that 99% of Mefites are either librarians or have a beard.
