NYC meetup on April 4th or 5th? March 11, 2008 11:19 AM   Subscribe

I'm going to be in NYC for a conference the weekend of April 4th/5th--anyone up for a meetup on the Friday or Saturday evening?

I know this is following hot on the heels of the meetup proposed by Del Far the previous weekend, but I'll be juuuuusst missing that one, as I arrive in New York City for a weeklong conference on April 1st. Drat!

However, if there's anyone who can't make the one on the 28th/29th (or doesn't mind back-to-back meetup gaiety) I'd love to get together with other Mefites on the evening of Friday, April 4th, or Saturday the 5th. (Spec80 has said she's available that weekend. Yay!) Also, I'm not familiar enough with New York pubs or bars to confidently suggest a location, so if anyone's got one in mind, please throw it out there.

On April 3rd, I (and hopefully a few other MeFites will be attending the Richard Price reading/signing at the Union Square Barnes & Noble at 7pm. You could always show up there.

Thanks for the tip about the signing, jonmc--it sounds great and I wish I could go but I'm booked to see a play that night, otherwise I'd definitely be there!

Wow. Thanks for the heads up -- I'll show for that.

I'm down. How about we wait and see which day of the week the other meetup will be on (Friday or Saturday) and do this one on the other day? I think the other one is going to be Friday, but I'm waiting for SassHat to confirm....

I'd be up for this.

Aw, sounds great! I am really looking forward to meeting you guys.

I am SO excited about going to New York again--I was there two years ago for the first time, and I loved it so much. I wasn't sure what to expect before I got there, but as soon as we got off the plane I nearly passed out from the sudden rush of just...being in New York. That probably sounds corny. I think I'm driving my family and friends crazy with my excitement over going back. And a meetup will be a wonderful finish for the trip!

Ok, the other thread decided on Friday. Shall we do this one on Saturday? If that's cool with hurdy gurdy girl, I propose she add it to the meetup sidebar.

Saturday works well for me! I will add this to the meetup sidebar.

Does anyone have any ideas for location? I'll be staying in Chelsea, if that area prompts any suggestions, but I am more than happy to go elsewhere.
posted by hurdy gurdy girl at 7:40 PM on March 11, 2008

From the FAQ I see I should wait to sidebar until after we agree on a place (and time). I propose 8:00.

I'm down. I say we meet up at 151 - the place in the LES where we had the transit strike meetup.
posted by Afroblanco at 8:52 PM on March 11, 2008

I think that would be a lovely place! We haven't been there in awhile.

I'll try to actually make it to this one, finally. I've been a terrible absentee NYC MeFite.

UkeFest is that weekend!

OK, sounds like we're set for 8:00, Saturday April 5th, at 151. Excellent! I'll sidebar it now.

[Ukeleles! Ah, the memories--I used to play the ukulele as a child in school.]

If we could somehow end up at Dash Dogs at some point in the evening, I'd be the happiest girl in all the land.

spec80: Count me in on the Dash Dogs. That photo on their website of a bacon-topped hot dog looks like a piece of manna from heaven. Yum!

According to Menu Pagesand this site, Dash Dogs is closed :-(

The Chihuahua, a bacon & avocado-topped hotdog at Crifdogs, might satisfy. They also have retro arcade games and a sweet little bar, entered through a telephone booth.

Oh no! Closed! My hopes are dashed! [sorry, couldn't help it]

The Chihuahua does sound good, though.

Yeah, I went to Dash Dogs a couple of weeks ago and they were shuttered. So sad. They were nice guys.

Also, I think I can make it to this one. Woot!

Wow, two in two weeks. The earlier one is coming right before a huge weekend work obligation, but this one looks like perfect timing. Count me in.

If the meetup doesn't even start until 8, I wouldn't be surprised if there were still people somewhere at midnight. Call my phone to find us- 727.475.4373

As I said in the other meetup thread, if spec80 promises to wear her Geordie LaForge goggles, I am so there.

Call my phone to find us

With all due respect, having an actual location for a meetup does have some advantages. That last one was a hard sell, what with the,"where do you want to go, now?", "to the East Village, where we'll make a phone call to find out where to go next."
posted by StickyCarpet at 5:27 PM on March 30, 2008

There is a location- 151. That's where everyone will be at 8 p.m.

I can't believe I have to miss this one too! I'll be in Philly, thinking of the fun you'll be having.

I think this'll be the first time I can make it to a meetup. Convenience and lack of tournament play = happy coincidence!
posted by Busithoth at 10:14 AM on April 5, 2008

Yeah, I kinda got burned on the last meetup, too. Showed up an hour late, after everyone had (unbeknownst to me) moved on to Katz's. Now that I have Kate's number, I am assured to find tonight's meetup. However, I really do think that staying in one place is a good idea for a meetup.
posted by Afroblanco at 10:21 AM on April 5, 2008

Another voice saying that meetups should have a location that is guaranteed for more than the first hour. Showing up to find everyone gone and then calling mission control for the next stop on the scavenger hunt is not necessarily that fun.

For some reason, a lot of NYCers don't like to stay in one place for more than 20 minutes or so. It's kind of annoying, sometimes, because you spend most of your time going to the next place.

Very ADD.
posted by Mr. President Dr. Steve Elvis America at 2:31 PM on April 5, 2008

Still iffy on making it tonight, but I'm going to throw my vote in for having meetups that involve mostly staying in one place. At least for more than an hour or two.

Having a bad issue with Rapid Realty in Brooklyn. Will not make it. Hate Rapid Realty.

the place is downstairs and not well labeled. We are in the back. You should recognize pinksuperhero and others.

Didn't get free until sometime after 8, and I'm rather shy, so didn't want to arrive late and draw copious amounts of attention to myself. Maybe the next one (I know, I've said that before).

The lovely Mrs Mutant & I were in New York this week on biz, and we extended our trip by one day so we could make this meetup.

Pix are here. We could only stay for about thirty minutes as we've got a 5AM wakeup call kicking off our return to London tomorrow, but we appreciate everyone's hospitality.

Also, the weather was wonderful in New York today, perhaps 15 or so, bright and sunny. Great for a day of gallery hopping and if it wasn't for this meetup we wouldn't have enjoyed the weather. Nicely day New York MeFi-ers.

I came late (worked till 8), and no produce was thrown, so your fears are unfounded, cmgonzalez. till next time...

It was indeed lovely to meet up with you folks. Thank you for showing me a good time on a New York evening! Who knew I would come to associate Metafilter with tasty rice pudding.

I've got some photos but won't be able to upload them for a while as I'll be in transit for the next couple of weeks. I think it'll be a bit of a chore to find internet access in France, especially with my bad French. However, I'll add them when I get back home.

Thanks again for the fun meetup.

Wait, there was rice pudding? Drat.

Ah, well it wasn't solely shyness, the trip would have taken me at least an hour from southern Brooklyn. Long ride + already late start, and I figured I'd just make it next time.
