Barbara's Holiday Garlic Ice Cream

After a spicy, rich dinner, this dessert is a refreshing climax. It should not be served after a bland, garlic-free meal as the slight hint of garlic will be extremely offensive to some. The strawberry or other fruit topping can be eliminated, along with the sugar, and the resulting mixture can be served with roast beef in lieu of horseradish sauce.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 tsp Gelatin
1/4 cup cold water
2 cups milk
3/4-1 cup sugar
2 tblsp lemon juice
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups whipping cream
Strawberry topping (or other fruit)

y'all think I could make a successful garlic ice cream? Has anyone here done this?

When I was a kid growing up on a farm, we would make ice cream from our own milk cow. Delicious! Sometimes, though, she would get into the wild onions that grew in her field; they made her milk & cream taste like oniony bad cow breath. A few times, we didn't taste the oniony bad cow breath flavored cream before mixing up the ice cream, and the result was, predictably, oniony bad cow breath flavored ice cream.

So while I can't speak to the garlic ice cream from experience, I can't imagine that it'd be tasty. I have tasted oniony bad cow breath flavored ice cream, and it was not nearly as good as it sounds.

Actually, mefi mail is kind of a pain for admin-type requests, since you have to send it to each one over and over for everyone to get it, then they don't know if they were the only one that got it.

Use the contact form, as we say on the MetaTalk posting page and new MeFi Mail page, since that automatically reaches all three of us and we can discuss/assign/fix together.

I think I'm partly responsible for this post, and I want to point out that I think garlic's heart was very much in the right place here. We were chatting about the role and practical use of Metatalk in the last day or so; pulling from my own response:

90% of the time it's still probably a better solution for someone to email us FIRST and post callout SECOND (if at all), but Metatalk does exist in part to provide a route for these things that doesn't require mod interjection from the start, so to some extent bad callouts are part of the system. The *really* bad ones we'll just close or delete, anyway, and the kinda-bad ones that don't get that treatment will usually get an admonishment from one of us that email/whatever would have been a good route to go.

Reasonably speaking, there are many things that get posted to Metatalk that could have started with a note to the contact form or maybe private correspondence between a couple of users. It doesn't mean that posting them to Metatalk is outright wrong (usually), but there's a lot of truth to the idea. Other things perhaps not so much—vetting feature ideas, certain kinds of bug reports, general policy discussions are all usually pretty much Metatalk-as-first-venue (though a sanity check on the admin side is always welcome).

I disagree a little with the framing of the post here; it comes off as kind of pushy and people are obviously reacting to that. Again, the sentiment is sound, but not the best way to present it, garlic.

And ditto about not using mefimail as the main route for admin requests and alerts— as Matt reiterates, the contact form is the best path if you need to let The Admins know about something. I don't personally mind admin-ish things coming to me via mefimail or personal mail if it's with the understanding and expectation that I might be away and it won't get dealt with immediately, but that's just me, and regardless if it's a "fix this!" thing rather than a "hey can I ask you an idle question" thing, the contact form is absolutely the thing to do.

This posting by garlic reminds me -- y'all think I could make a successful garlic ice cream? Has anyone here done this?

Years ago I had some garlic ice cream at the aforementioned Gilroy Garlic Festival. It were vanilla-ish, I recall, and served in a half cantaloupe. Better than one would expect. As ice cream adventure goes, it was only surpassed by my nutjob coworker's entire five gallons of self-made wasabi ice cream. That was...something.

Where does one find Mefi Mail, by the way? According to the preferences page, it should be enabled for my account. But I can never seem to turn up a way to access such a feature. Y'all are just making this thing up, right?
posted by nakedcodemonkey at 4:13 PM on March 18, 2008

Oh and I guess a small side note to this, to agree with cortex, one of the things that happens to us a lot is that someone emails with a suggestion or a complaint or whatever. We'll respond and sometimes that will kick off a back and forth conversation that has policy type issues at its core.

As much as I like idle banter, if I'm going to be explicating policy issues -- say someone emails to ask "why was my comment deleted?" and I explain and then they have a question about that -- I'd like to do it in MeTa because then the explanations are public for everyone to see and discuss. I'm a little wary of giving someone long explanations for things that they'll take to heart as policy when they're really policy interpretations by me and me only.

If it's just a quickie "Can you explain this to me?" I'm fine with it, but once it becomes a protracted discussion it should take place here both because I don't have time for superlong emails about policy minutiae with each user individually and because "community policing" does sort of mean everyone gets to chime in on how the policies are applied and how well they're functioning.

OK so about 15 minutes ago I had the first free time I've had in...I dunno, probably about a week. So, naturally, I come here for my fix.

It was a little before 3 in the afternoon, on today, March 18th. I'm sitting in Los Angeles at the moment.

But the front page of the blue was showing me (and still is) the first two posts from the early AM hours of March 19th. I shit you not.

HOLY HELL I AM READING METAFILTER IN THE FUTURE.

I just sat there and let it sink in for a minute. I thought of the 60-some thousand other plebes that didn't have this feature on their account. I thought about how special I was. It crossed my mind for a minute that maybe mathowie had recently enabled a new function, but a brief check of the front page of MeTa yielded no posts on recently added ponies-of-awesomeness. It did, however, list this as the top post, and it was posted at 10:50 PM TONIGHT.

That's like 7 hours from now!

I have transcended a new level of awesome.

I return to the blue to see what other new powers I may now have. I see nothing of much import, except the now THREE posts from tomorrow morning.

WHAT THE HELL.

I hover my mouse over the little clock on the bottom right-hand corner of my screen. The date dutifully pops-up in its pale little window, informing me that it is in fact still March 18th. I glance back up at the blue: March 19. Clock: March 18. Blue: March 19.

I blink twice. Clock: March 18. Blue: March 19.

I am going to take a screen shot of this, toss it on Flickr, me-fi mail it to a mod, and tell them about my new powers, but also perhaps ask them if I am crazy.

Jessamyn is probably pissed at me about one of my (relatively few?) AskMeFi thread-snarks in the recent past, given the flare-ups of late - of which I had no part in, but she won't remember that, she'll just remember the times I did screw up, like maybe the whole bears vs. monkeys thing...and then she'll take my new powers away. She won't do.

Cortex...no. He'll steal my powers and use them for his own nefarious purposes.

Mathowie. Can he be trusted with my secret? I doubt it. But...I have to know.

And that's about the moment I realized that my MeFi clock is still set to Johannesburg time, and I traveled more than a few time-zones west in the last week (I'm still waking up at 3 in the morning so I'll allow myself this brief interlude of sorts).

Can you imagine what it would have looked like if I had made a MeTa post about it?

MeFi mail is a good idea (or the contact form, as the mods are pointing out - but remember - you have to go with a mod you trust, and who knows which one of them is going to see that first...).

Legend has it that Storch was in the middle of a Grant impersonation when Judy Garland walked in. Apparently, this is how he addressed the star. Even though the line was never said in any of Grant's movies, Storch's impression inexplicably stuck and was often used by other impressionists."

Stop . . .fuck it I'm going home and having a beer.

Good plan. I'd do the same, but I'm just about to leave for work.

I try never to stop drinking.

I tried to start metadrinking. But it's more work than just regular drinking.

And you shouldn't email the mods just to make sure that you have a decent recipe for Bacon Candy. Because they get enough weird mail to begin with.

(1 lb Bacon (not thick-cut)
1/4 cup Brown sugar
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
Slice bacon into 1/2 inch strips and dredge in brown sugar until thoroughly coated.
Crumple aluminum foil to allow for grease drainage and place it on a baking sheet. Lay out the bacon on this making sure not to overlap pieces.
Bake until crispy. Allow to cool and harden before serving.)

What, it wasn't one of the mods that mentioned bacon candy? Bah, I'm probably just having a faulty memory moment.
Hmmm. Maybe the bacon candy needs garlic.

What if I use mefimail to send someone the contents of an entire Meta thread? Complete with flameout that possibly hurts metafilter or worse, our wonderchicken? Is that out? Is that what I should take away from this intense & heated discussion?

I discovered yesterday that I'm on IMDB.

I want an IMDB credit so much. I would sell you all into slavery to the Lizard People for an IMDB credit. I wouldn't even think twice.

Someone with the same name as me is on IMDB. However, she is dead.

Killed her and assumed her name, did you?

Well played.

No you don't. It's not worth it. It means you have to work in the film and / or television business. Which, y'know, fucking SUCKS.

For reals.

Wait, we're supposed to learn stuff here? Man, I better start paying attention.

Damn skippy. There may be a pop quiz any minute, and that's 25% of your grade.

dersins, that's what kills me, I'm, at best, only tangentially associated with the business. I mean, at best. And yet, there I am. Kinda wondering if this makes me eligible to date starlets now, though. My wife will be upset but when you're one of the beautiful people it goes with the territory.

Uh, if so, let me know.

Hee. This thread amuses me. When I first saw it I paused and read it over twice to make sure that I wasn't missing some sort of glaringly obvious clue that was saying "I am being ironic and here is my REAL purpose!"

MeMail for feature requests and bug reports? Really?

I mean, really?

It's a different surname though.

Someone with the same name as me is the religion editor for Publishers Weekly. And she is quoted as saying things like: “Jesus, Jesus and More Jesus... Jesus is all the rage in the media these days!” and “In publishing, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” Which kinda makes me feel a bit dead inside.

Yay, I'm on IMDB. Unfortunately, it's missing the biggest production I've worked on. Oh well. I suppose if I ever want to get into post I should try to make sure it's listed.

We found a freind of ours on IMDb by accident the other day, which was a bit odd. I understand that it's not actually that unusual if you;re all attached to film/tv/videogames, with the bar to getting an entry being about the same as getting your own wikipedia page.

[Does not have own IMDb entry. Has wikipedia page, which is mildly puzzling]

I think we are all forgetting that the point of metatalk (unlike, apparently, AskMe), is to have fun. Please don't make the fun go away.

I think you're thinking of MetaChat. See you there!

Also, I think we are all forgetting that the point of metatalk (unlike, apparently, AskMe), is to have fun. Please don't make the fun go away.

I missed this the first time around, but no it's totally not, unless in the sense that point of life is having fun, and so unless you derive some pleasure at some level from participation in Metatalk, there's no real reason to do it.

But I'm pretty sure that's not what you're saying.

When I was 4, my friend's father asked if I wanted to be in his movie (I'm assuming as an extra or the like), and I said no! My parents would have let me do it, but I refused. Now I'll never be on IMDb. :(

Matt and I have Wikipedia pages. Mine just survived its fourth or fifth deletion go-round, depending on how you count. No one has ever tried to delete Matt's.

Is Mars in retrograde or something?

Dammit, IT'S SPRING BREAK AND ALL THE STUDENTS AND ACADEMICS HAVE NOTHING TO DO SO THEY'RE COMING TO MEFI AND FUCKIN' SHIT UP. These crazy peaks tend to coincide with academic time off points but I'm always the only one to see it foam foam they called me mad at the academy especially around thanksgiving...
