Notice and Gratitude April 9, 2008 9:37 PM   Subscribe

Tomorrow's NPR episode of The Bryant Park Project will include features on Stuff Nobody Likes and Muxtapes, complete with an interview with our very own Afroblanco.

As one of the founders of Stuff Nobody Likes, I want to thank ThePinkSuperhero, Matt, Jess, Cortex and pb, as well as all of the rest of you who helped to turn a silly joke into a popular site within a week. Even the snark in the open thread has only fueled us to try to do better.

Metafilter: the site that keeps on giving

I should probably mention that by "tomorrow" I mean 'Thursday," at which point most of you reading this will have already missed it. Sorry about that, but it happened fast.

Which one's gonna be the one with Afroblanco, then?

D'oh, never mind. Here's the link to the original Projects page.

What's NPR?

Awesome. I hope you all do "Groups of people who walk side-by-side" soon. Nothing gets me enraged like posses of wannabe Reservoir Dogs forcing me off the sidewalk and into the street to dodge out of their way. And usually, there's only two people talking at the center of the phalanx anyways, who why the excessive sidewalk wingmen?

Yeah, they didn't wind up letting me on because I refused to give them my full name. However, the site admin, Alia, did a wonderful job with the interview. She hit on all the important points, and the interview is tons of fun to listen to.

And yes, I'd like to thank everyone here who helped propel our weird little joke into the national spotlight.

MeFi has given me so much over the years. I actually met Navelgazer on here a couple years ago, and had I never met Navelgazer, this project would never have come to fruition. It was awesome to see things come full circle and have our site posted to MeFi.

Y'all are awesome. Thanks for everything. Life is good.

Why didn't you want to give your full name?
posted by Dave Faris at 6:34 AM on April 10, 2008

Because I'm the most profane blogger on the site, and I may want to work for a conservative bank some day.

What's NPR?
This radio company that white people like.
posted by Miko at 7:58 AM on April 10, 2008

So you're pimping a radio piece about a website you help run. How is this Metafilter-related?

I didn't post this, but I'm imagining that Navelgazer did because :

1) It was on MeFi Projects
2) It made it from MeFi Projects to the front page
3) Once it made it to the front page, it kinda blew up (relatively speaking) and landed us an interview on NPR

Because I'm the most profane blogger on the site

This sounds like a new feature request to me. Is it possible to write a script to determine which mefites are the most prolific users of the infamous "seven words"?
posted by besotted at 8:59 AM on April 10, 2008

long-time mefite gains measure of fame due to mefi = mefi related.

This is a bit self-linky, though.
posted by empath at 9:17 AM on April 10, 2008

Alright, well, as I said, I didn't post it (and didn't know that Navelgazer was going to post it, actually). I'm hoping that he'll hop in here and answer the charges. Otherwise, if it's beyond the pale, I'm sure that the mods will have no qualms with closing the thread.

I have an idea! Let's shit on a little bit of happiness on this site!
posted by frecklefaerie at 9:22 AM on April 10, 2008 [8 favorites]

Indeed. Close the thread and delete it if it feels to hinky, for sure. As Afroblanco said, it was something we started as a joke, put on projects, it jumped to the front page from there, and then got us on NPR, with another featured segment on something else that was also recently on the blue. And (until it didn't work out) the interview was going to be with a long-time Mefite using his Mefite name. I thought that was enough to make it metafilter-related. Again, if it's truly problematic, I'm happy to see this taken down.

This is fun and exciting. Thanks for posting this thread!
posted by ibmcginty at 9:30 AM on April 10, 2008

For what it's worth, IMO this thread easily passes the smell test.

(The thread on the blue, on the other hand, was *slightly* iffy to me as I perceive TPS as being friends with all the NY crowd and posting a friend's site is sorta equivalent to a self-link. But not enough that I would have said anything ... well, except now that the argument is being made the post-on-the-blue somehow exempts criticism of this thread...does that make any sense?)

I mean "do I make any sense", not does the exemption argument make any sense.
posted by danOstuporStar at 9:43 AM on April 10, 2008

posting a friend's site is sorta equivalent to a self-link

Except that it's not, because I'm not involved in the site. It was the same method I find other stuff for FPPs- I figured, hey, this is cool, people should see this. I wondered if it would bother people that I knew Afroblanco (I don't know the other contributors, at least I don't think so) but I figured, eh, I'll post the site, if someone has a problem with it and it ends up getting deleted, that's fine, no skin off my nose.

If it was beyond the pale, we would have had no qualms about closing the thread and probably saying as much while we were at it. This is fine, everybody is cool, let's not have a tizzy.

For what it's worth, griping about the relevance to Metafilter never even occurred to me when I read this, so I interpret that to mean that either this is a non-issue, or that my meds have started to kick in.
