Yikes.
Haven't thought of these guys in many years.
Haven't seen them in 30 years(!)
How did I get so frigging old?

I've got family in town and my kid has playdates.
Sorry.

(No-- Really-- How did I get so frigging old?...)

Add N and maybe I'd try to come.

oh man. tempting, but i can't make it.

We would so be there if we didn't live on the opposite coast.

Anybody who can go should go - they put on a hell of a show. Remember how great punk was when you were like, fourteen? It's still great.

Quoted for truth. Caught them a year or so ago and other than Exene looking and sounding a little worse for wear (is anyone surprised?), goddamn do they still have it. Billy Zoom especially.

If you can go: GO.

Any Boston area mefites planning to have sex next week?
This is an inappropriate question, even for MeTa!

Is anyone anywhere planning to go to a concert or event next week? Let's be inclusive.

We saw X a few months ago at a small club here in SF. The age range of the crowd was 20s to 50s, probably, except for this one kid who looked about 13. He had a mowhawk up to HERE and was wearing this beat up old leather jacket (dad's? mom's?) and he was just awesome. Everyone who saw him wanted to pinch his cheek (we resisted, not wanting to get kicked in the privates) and also immediately nostalgic. His parents were there, looking very ordinary and non-punk in their fleece jackets, but I caught them both singing along.

Go. Really. I'm jealous.

I'd like to go, but first I'd have to leave Los Angeles.

First we gonna rock.
Then we gonna roll.
Then we let it pop.
Don't let it go.

I just watched the embedded video from SXSW on X's site.

"Your Phone's Off The Hook" made me very, very happy.

I wish they were playing my town.

These songs are so great. I wonder why they haven't cashed in and licensed them to sell juicers or something. Because if any band deserves to rolling about in great piles of sell-out cash, it's X.

Who?

Unfortunately I have my own show next week that I'm performing in. If anyone like Tennessee Williams drop me a line and I can give you some info on it.

nthing that X are still BRILLIANT. Saw them last month here in L.A. and they fucking rocked so hard I couldn't believe it (well, I could believe it, because they play in L.A. with some frequency, and I try to go every time). All four of them are amazing. Billy Zoom is a madman, and I say this with love.

Wolfdog, what I meant when I posted this is that possibly a meetup might result from it. I've seen meetups scheduled around other cultural things.

cashman said "Add N and maybe I'd try to come."

They broke up.

Holy cow, I'm so old I don't read the back pages of the weeklies anymore and I didn't know they were touring at all. THANK YOU!!!! I've just bought my Houston tickets, so I can relive driving to high school smoking menthol cigarettes and singing "True Love" at the top of my lungs. Yay!

I HAD TO get out, malocchio!....no clock bought though. ;-)

I've seen X more times than I can remember and they never fail to burn the house down.
posted by eyeballkid at 2:35 PM on May 14, 2008

Seriously, go to this show if you can. I saw them in PDX this spring, and they were amazing. After the show, Billy Zoom touched my hand and I swooned like a little girl.

If they do 'Fourth Of July,' think of me. I love that song.

Y?
posted by BozoBurgerBonanza at 5:53 AM on May 15, 2008

I might try to make it--that'll be my first week of work.

Incidentally, I am a new transplant to Boston (as of Saturday), and I know something like three people. I missed the Cambridge meetup, but I'd love to get to meet the local MeFi fauna. How soon is too soon for another meetup? I remember in NY (where I'm coming from), we had two in consecutive weeks, but NY's a bigger town.

Go Sox!

Actually I'm in NY full time, but coming up to Boston for a few days. Eideteker is the only one in the area who I know.

I'm gonna see them in Atlanta the following week. Whoo hoo!
posted by spilon at 12:49 PM on May 15, 2008

Yrrrr Pope Guilty, they were in Indianapolis two months ago!
posted by brujita at 1:32 PM on May 15, 2008

I had no idea they were touring. I had a friend down from Muncie this week, and when we realised that we could've seen X back in March, we were devastated.
posted by Pope Guilty at 3:05 PM on May 15, 2008

do you bums have the capacity to handle a dissenting opinion?

I've seen a lot of bands in my time, and X is right at the top of the list of the senselessly overrated. I can't imagine what you people see in them, other than the sheer momentum of the hipster name drop.

seriously. they have but one absurdly limited, musically simplistic song formula and a stark absence of showmanship to really drive the point home.

just don't carry on like you weren't warned.
posted by momocrome at 2:18 PM on May 16, 2008 [1 favorite]

just don't carry on like you weren't warned.

Oh look! Our favorite band sux amirite?

Your opinion, thanks for sharing, and it's all good because that means one fewer ticket sold to an X show, making it available to someone who loves them.

(And as wild n woolly as the grey can be, it's still considered bad form to barge into a thread and gratuitously insult people. If you want people to know that you think our favorite band sux, there are ways of doing that without insulting us, and making yourself look like an ass. Unless that's how you want to appear, in which case - congrats!)

momocrome, you're welcome to your opinion, but this is a meetup organization thread, not an argument. It's really not the place to try and start a fight about a music group. Email me if you need clarification on this.

I apologize for stepping all over yet another unspoken protocol here at metafilter. Personally I feel it's laid on a bit thick, but whatever. You guys have a mechanism to maintain some insular warm and fuzzies, and more power to you.

however, I feel my post was entirely justified. One, in that this 'area' of the site seems to be set aside for discussion of the site and off topic chatter. I base this on perusal of the other posts. No mention of rules and regulation are to be found anywhere detailing the nature of the discourse permitted. but whatever.

the main reason I felt compelled to post was to dissuade that random beantown bugger that stumbles by and says 'looky here! a live show with raving mefites, i think I'll blow $50 based solely on their unanimity'. Honestly, I've been burnt by this particular act on a couple of occasions. Pointing that out might just help. If I save one person from disappointment, it will have been worth all the scolding.

It's the least I can do as an honest, decent and conscientious human being.

Your bravery is commendable. Do you want a medal, or a chest to pin it on?

It's the least I can do as an honest, decent and conscientious human being.

And it's quite possible to be a decent human being without calling people bums or accusing them of not being able to stand an opposing viewpoint. Agreed?

This is not a policy post. It's a meetup thread. It turned into a yay-X! thread, but it's still a meetup thread,. If you really wanted to warn people about how you think X sucks, you could have said "I've seen a lot of bands, and I found X really disappointing, both musically and as performers."

Would that have been so difficult?

Dear momocrome:

Whatever.

Also please stop being such a smarmy asshole.
posted by desuetude at 6:13 PM on May 16, 2008

(And just in case anybody's still following this, tickets are not $50. They are $27.50.)

Thank you scody, rtha, desuetude and cortex!.......can we get back on topic now?

Are any Boston people going? I will also be at the Spanish art exhibit at 11:30 on Monday, if anyone's interested in that. I go back to NYC late Wednesday.

Amazing show...and much better than the last time I saw them! I managed to snag a place in the mezzanine where I could sit. The lead singer of the Detroit Cobras (the opening band) sounds like a baby Janis Joplin.

Momocrome, perhaps this would be more to your taste?
