Quickest way to Metafilter Lofi June 26, 2008 11:32 AM   Subscribe

Is there an easy way to get to Metafilter's lofi version? I'm at work and must filter. But even a google search for "Metafilter lofi" can't get me there.

Here ya go. Found it on the wiki.

There's also this, if the lofi version still looks too much like fun.

But really, Kim? If the classy white-background-with-light-blue-links version isn't professional enough, it's time to get out.

Lofi's better for mobile browsing, at least on my non-iPhone.

(and therefore should be easier to find)

Wow, was this in MetaTalk ever?

Whoop, here we go.

Hmmm, the lofi shows (at least one) deleted thread.

Well, now that you mention it, I just got a replacement iPhone and have been having a HELLUVA time finding the Metafilter mobile link as well. What about a place on the blue (maybe a column in the footer) that has necessary quicklinks such as Lofi, Mobile, Export comments, link to list of other related sites. This would be especially helpful when you're on a foreign computer, are showing Metafilter to someone new, or using a mobile device.

I mean come on...we have a "Make it Start" link, but no Metafilter Mobile link?!

Please don't obsoletiate carsonb.
posted by carsonb at 12:19 PM on June 26, 2008

lofi is not maintained. That it continues to work at all is a happy stroke for the folks who like it, but it's made available as-is to those daring enough to track it down, and that's probably how it will stay forever.

Making the actual Mobile view more visible is probably a good idea, though.

We were just talking about making "export" more visible the other day, though I can't recall the context off the top of my head.

Cool enough. For the future, anybody have tips on the best Google search terms to find lofi version? I imagine that I'll probably remember the terms easier than digging for this post (or through the Wiki) to find lofi.

Lofi shows all the deleted threads, fantabulous! That's what makes it such a nice - well, timewaster.

If someone wrote a song about and you listened to that song on your mobile boombox, that'd be lofi mefi wifi hifi.

But since that's not too likely, my comment is just lofi mefi wifi hifi scifi.

I knew some nerds in high school who were real lofi mefi wif hifi scifi doofi.

Also, if you want to LoFi-ize everything, you can checkout the discontinued Ghostzilla project. It embeds a Mozilla client inside any window area (such as the email area of Outlook), hides pictures until you mouse-over them and turns all text to gray & white.

Only if you mis-pronounce MeFi like MeeFie. But who the hell would talk like that?

I discovered mobile.metafilter.com last night and I fell in love after noticing that it's only a couple of KB versus the 33KB of metafilter's full site in Opera Mini 4.

Sadly, the site can't be browsed because there's no 'Next 5 posts' link.

There's just plain no way to make "lofi" and "mefi" rhyme without doing something really phonetically perverse. Emphasis is on the first syllable, so a good rhyme needs to line up there, and "lo" doesn't come close to rhyming with "mee" or "meh", regardless of the "fee" vs. "fie" question.
posted by cortex (staff) at 6:30 AM on June 27, 2008

I just realized I don't know the proper pronunciation of MeFi. Where's the official MeFi pronunciation guide? I cringe at the thought that may also be pronouncing "hurf durf" incorrectly.
posted by NikitaNikita at 7:29 AM on June 27, 2008

I say "MEH-fie". Matt and Jess say "MEE-fie". I'm pretty sure they're both wrong, but I've yet to unearth the ancient text that proves it.

I think the nature of hurf durf is such that any pronunciation is acceptable.

Having never heard anyone say 'MeFi,' I had constructed the apparently improbable 'Mee-Fie' and am exercising my statutory right to claim that everyone else is incorrect.

Nothing improbable about the correct pronunciation.

Exactly. Hence, "the improbable 'Mee-Fie'".

Alls I know is it sounds hefty, hefty nerdy when I say out loud "I read it on Metafilter". It reads fine, but in the air it sort of hangs there like the bad smell of a pocket protector

These typewritten pronunciation discussions make everyone so meffy.
posted by fantabulous timewaster at 7:27 PM on June 27, 2008

It's totally Mee-Fie.

Though actually, in my head it was a manged "mmffff" for the longest time, since I don't always pronounce everything I read in my head. And then I went to a meetup, and people were saying Mee-Fie, even though Meh-Fee made more sense to me. But I figured - meetup, these people knew what they were doing, I'll go with it.

And now Meh-Fee just sounds wrong. Even if the inestimable languagehat endorses it. A fact which pains me greatly.

But it's Mee-Fie.

Curse you, Ottawa Meetup.

TiFi

The Lofi Mefi Wifi Hifi Scifi Doofi Refi is not recognized by FIE or the AFI or ChiPhi or even .fi.

And to cortex, languagehat and the other MetaDorks who insist on pronouncing MeFi as "Meffy", fie on you.

And fi'd hit it.

I have a special withering stare I save for people who insist that "MEH-fie" should be rendered "meffy".
