Firefox under Ubuntu Hardy. Sometimes happens, sometimes not. Can't seem to identify what makes the difference. Doubt it is Metafilter problem, but figured this was the place to bring it up.

It does this when Javascript is turned off.

I don't turn Javascript on and off, and it is on. I will note, I have Strange Things happen in Firefox where my configuration of toolbars is apparently changed by some web pages (where it used to be only for a specific page, it stays that way on new windows). Checking in preferences, I see it is set as it should, and such things should not be allowed.

(I should have added, these Strange Things that happen are entirely new since Hardy. Hardy is entirely new with new computer. But I don't notice this sort of problem anywhere else than Metafilter--Which could be a selection bias, since MeFi is where I am the most).

1) Stop favoriting
2) Change operating system
3) Change browser
4) Hardy! How the hell do they come up with these names?
5) Sorry I'm not more helpful.

I noticed this recently, too, and I think I know what caused it in my case. After quonsar posted that link about gif files that run scripts to infect your computer, I installed (at the advice of someone in the thread) ScriptBlocker, the firefox extension. Scriptblocker breaks favorites and other metafilter functionality, including posting comments without previewing, until you tell it to allow metafilter. If you only temporarily allow metafilter, instead of permanently allowing it, you'll find that sometimes it works fine and sometimes it does not, depending on whether you've allowed metafilter for that session.
in other words, from one noob to another: way to go, noob.

Okay, I'll do that then.

Try it with a clean firefox profile. If the problem persists, it's something screwy in your profile, probably caused by an extension gone awry.
If that's the case, import your bookmarks and histry into the clean profile, and reinstall extenstions one by one until you find the culprit.

Is ScriptBlocker the same thing as NoScript?

Oddly I don't get this in FF 3 on Hardy but I do get it rarely on Camino on Tiger.

I got it on my in-laws computer with IE. That's the only time I've seen it.

I think I might just reinstall, and see what happens. There are other odd issues as well. Hardy is the first version of Ubuntu that has made me seriously unhappy. I do wonder about it being a plug-in, but I don't have many of those (each time they make in update to Firefox, the plug-ins are suddenly invalid).
