Impromptu Melbourne boozeup?

I'm gonna have a couple of hours free after work in Melbourne this Wednesday, if anybody feels like a beer or two. If not, then I can get my fill of Ethiopian food, because we've got bugger all of that in Sydney. So, either way, I'm easy.

I'll be in the CBD, close to Lygon & Brunswick Streets, near the Parliament building, if anybody's in that area.

What time were you thinking of? I'm due to finish work around 7.30 on Wednesday.

How late will you go? I'm arriving Wednesday afternoon, but will be having dinner with my family that night. Totally up for a drink if I can make it though.

Or, how early will you be starting? Not sure what time we'll be doing dinner yet...

I'll be up for that. I work on Spring St, so close enough. Being in close to the start of this, I'll suggest the Elms as a meetup point, because it'll annoy Wilful, but may encourage Russm (and also cos I'm a bit of a regular there).

I'm quite happy to be over-ruled too, but it's a starter...

I'm good for earlier in the evening.

barnacles calls to an empty playground:

We have Ethiopian food in Canberra, too! Guys? Hello? Anyone?

....

Is this a zombie movie?

Is this a zombie movie?

Funny, that's *exactly* what I think whenever I visit Canberra.

OK, to avoid the endless back-and-forth that characterises Sydney meetups, I'll go with this Elms place. Say, 6pm Wednesday onwards. My flight's booked for 9:30 or so, but can be pushed back if needed, though I don't like staying up too late on a school night.

I don't understand why you weirdos don't just go to the Townie since it's the Best. Ever.
posted by turgid dahlia at 5:46 PM on August 18, 2008

The Townie?!?? In Newtown?!?? That's the most appallingly craptactular pub in the entire city, and only ever managed to have any kind of clientele whatsoever because the Oxford shot itself in the foot by turning all ethno-kitschy in its Zanzibar incarnation, and because tourists are too shit-thick to find their way to the Courty.

Wednesday night?
It now looks like I'll be working until 8.30pm so probably won't make it. Have fun!

No, the Town Hall in North Melbourne. Because that's where you're going to be. In Melbourne.

turgo, your comment came directly after i was talking about how long it takes to negotiate a venue for a sydney meetup, so a newtown townie interpretation made total sense.

I don't read this website.

Though, yeah, my comment was a bit facetious, soz!

It now looks like I'll be staying in Melbourne Wednesday night as well, so that eliminates some of the time pressure.

Hey, I can actually do this! I'll be there ~6pm, have to get back to Camberwell at 8pm.

turgid dahlia - that's my new favorite emoticon ever. And if I ever make it to North Melbourne, I will meet you at the Townie and buy you a beer for introducing it to my world.

Ubu, I'm afraid I'm going to have to miss you this time. Which is very unfortunate but continues to prove that you don't exist in real life.

Bastards - have fun. Let the (inter)national meet-up preliminaries begin. Organisation of the 10th is underway I believe (Ohio, so we can all get cheap tickets, I heard. OK), jessamyn has stickers already.

Unfortunately I now have to publicly admit that I am itinerary-illiterate, and I don't arrive in Melbourne at 4pm, that's when I depart from Brisbane. I won't make it.

Now to tell my sister...

Ohio? But there's nowhere to sit!

The Elms?? You're fucking kidding me. This kind of retro-hipster shit is something we leave to people from the pacific north-west (and syd-e-ney).

The Elms is a dingy old man pub. You know, get in touch with your working class roots. Except pompom's a private school educated rugby fan, with a distant english accent... There are so many better places just nearby. Why not Troika?

Anyway, I can't come, so enjoy yourselves.

Actually, I'll not be there, as I'm ill. Apologies.

And Wil, it's got bugger all to do with 'working class roots'. The Elms is generally populated with IT bods. It has everything to do with being right next door to work and serving the cheapest beer about.

But, you know, whatever you reckon...

Rubbish! What about Round Bottom?
posted by UbuRoivas at 9:30 PM on August 19, 2008

Right, if anybody's still going to this retro-hipster pub this evening, you'll be able to recognise me by my cherry Doc Martens brogues.

hmmm - I was just thinking that might be an issue, since no-one I know will be there... in fact, it looks like just you and me... keep an eye out for the bald noggin with various metallic accoutrements...

bah - I seem to be coming down with this month's cold too... pin: pulled...

enjoy your ethiopian dinner...

posted by russm at 3:40 PM on August 20, 2008

what do you mean, "only one person"?!?? nicky was there in spirit. i took photos, but when i tried to have them developed, they came out all rainbow-coloured hooks of light.
