September 25 is a Thursday, for those of us who assume meetups happen on Wednesday. It's after the scheduled move into Mr. Blandings Dream House, so, barring catastrophe, I should have no more contractor emergencies that drain me of the will to live or leave the house when there is whiskey right here, at home, in the cupboard. I cast my vote for the Goat on Wells.
posted by crush-onastick at 7:26 AM on August 19, 2008

As a rule, I can't make Thursday, I'm traveling for work.
posted by eriko at 7:39 AM on August 19, 2008

I'm in, obviously. I'm also invoking my executive powers: the first venue to get five votes wins. I abstain, since the Goat was my idea.

Also, for future self: THURSDAY THURSDAY THURSDAY THURSDAY.

American Girl Boutique and Bistro!
American Girl Boutique and Bistro!

American Girl Boutique and Bistro!

We have a winner!
Hey, it's Chicago.

My vote is for lemonade with Samantha and Nellie. This will be so elegant!

I haven't managed to get myself to a meetup yet, though, so my vote probably shouldn't count.

VOTE GOAT.

STABILITY WE CAN BELIEVE IN.

Everyone knows those "American" girls are terrorists. You don't support terror do you, citizen?
posted by sparkletone at 9:19 AM on August 19, 2008

Well, I totally vote Goat. And I prefer Thursdays because I'm already downtown Thursdays, but with notice, I can switch days. So if Wednesday is universally preferred, then, whatev. I am officially not casting an official ballot on the Wednesday vs. Thursday issue.
posted by iguanapolitico at 9:29 AM on August 19, 2008

I should be able to make it, but who knows. I'll be married by then, I may need to ask my husband for permission.

Goat gets my vote.
posted by misskaz at 10:26 AM on August 19, 2008

The goat has five votes now (crush, sparkletone, iguana, misskaz and WCM), so it's signed, sealed and delivered. I have no Wednesday/Thursday preference. Pretty sure I'll be around.

We're opening our first Canadian store on that day, and rolling out a bunch of new pages on the companion website in conjunction. If everything goes smoothly, I'll be wanting to celebrate, and this seems like a spectacular way. If everything goes less than smoothly, there's a good chance I won't be able to make it.

Hooray for Chicago-based businesses! Everybody pull for Crate and Barrel's success in Toronto! My presence depends on it!
posted by SpiffyRob at 12:04 PM on August 19, 2008

SpiffyRob - awesome. I love Crate & Barrel. I just spent a fortune there for my new place. And the delivery guys were great.

I may or may not be able to make it. This time I will walk around the whole place like eighty times before I leave because I think no one's there.

Well, the 25th is in the post title, so I think we're committed. So: Billy Goat III at 330 S. Wells, 6PM, September 25th, which is a Thursday.

Here's an easy-to-remember mnemonic for you: Thor, the god of thunder, is said to ride a chariot that is pulled by a team of magic GOATS, animals whose horns signify WELLBEING ("Cornucopia") and the meat of which Thor eats at NIGHT to keep up his strength. The "Day of Thunor" is a rough Germanic equivalent to "Jupiter's Day", and as Jupiter was identified with Thor in northern Europe, eventually became "Thor's Day", or THURSDAY in English. So now we should all be on the same page.

AGAIN: THIS IS NOT THE BILLY GOAT UNDERNEATH MICHIGAN AVENUE. THIS IS THE BILLY GOAT A FEW BLOCKS WEST, NEAR UNION STATION. WE'RE TRYING SOMETHING NEW, BUT NOT TOO NEW, BECAUSE TOO NEW MAKES CRUSH'S HAIR FALL OUT.

Well I want to see misskaz's tattoo in person (if she'll let me) so I'll have to try to make my first metafilter meetup.

It's true; I fear change!

Thursday! Look, if you need help remembering, just think of it like this: The third day. All right? Monday, one day. Tuesday, two day. Wednesday, when? Huh? What day? Thursday! The third day! Okay?
posted by SpiffyRob at 1:25 PM on August 19, 2008

I can't make a commitment to something so far away. That's more than a month from now! But as the day approaches, I'll keep it in mind and see what my work/school load looks like.

Cruuuuuuuuuud! I'm again out of town (stupid Vegas). Have a great time, and keep 'em coming! It's been great to see a steady stream of Chicago meetups lately.

Ok, guys, so I just made kind of a last minute decision to start my MBA this semester, so I may not be available. I find out when my classes are next week so I'll update here.
posted by MeetMegan at 4:20 PM on August 23, 2008

Wait wait wait...

We're sticking to the Billy Goat, because it's familiar. But we're moving it to the Billy Goat on S. Wells?

And it's on a Thursday?

What type of Bizarro-World Meetup is this?
posted by wfrgms at 7:54 PM on August 23, 2008

Ok, THIS time I'm in. For reals!

No, SERIOUSLY.

Going to try to make it out for my first meet-up.

I want to go to a meetup. I'm a part-time Chicagoan but haven't lived there in years. Is this a take-the-train, can't-park-anywhere-nearby-for-reasonable-price type of area?
posted by Locative at 2:18 PM on September 14, 2008

I don't have a car, so I'm not 100%, but I believe that about sums it up, Locative. Depending on where you're coming from, though, this one's only about a block away from the Metra hub at Ogilvie.
posted by adamdschneider at 8:19 PM on September 14, 2008

Oh, thanks adamdschneider. That actually will help a lot. I hope I can make it.

Map of 330 S. Wells. You can see several L and bus stops as well as Union Station nearby.
posted by wfrgms at 11:42 AM on September 15, 2008

There are also six million parking garages in that area (and, in fact, one right next door on Wells), but I strongly recommend the train, el, or bus.

Boo! I'm outta town. I'll be outta town until next August at the earliest, so maybe I need to organize a Paris meetup...

the american girl boutique and bistro thing is a joke, right? cause if so, hillllarioussssss

I'm going to be in Chicago on October 12 & 13th. Would y'all perhaps want to have another meetup on the 12th?
posted by sciurus at 1:04 PM on September 18, 2008

we meet up all the damn time. We like our drink and to hear ourselves talk. That said, I'm out for the 12th, but y'all go on, have fun.
posted by crush-onastick at 2:00 PM on September 18, 2008

A word of warning about those parking garages: If dilly-dally in your a friend's car for more than 15-minutes your paid ticket expires and you either have to drunkenly explain yourself to attendant or pay again...
posted by wfrgms at 3:53 PM on September 18, 2008

Oops, my mistake. Even with all the hoopla I still thought we were meeting at Billy Goat II and not Billy Goat III, making it a bit more significant of a hike from Ogilvie (but still walkable).
posted by adamdschneider at 5:44 PM on September 21, 2008

I think the next meetup should be at the Wilson Avenue water crib.
posted by wfrgms at 8:29 AM on September 22, 2008

I came *this* close to thinking the meetup was tonight as I was leaving for work this morning.

/shakes her fist at the Thursday meetup
posted by misskaz at 8:30 AM on September 24, 2008

misskaz: I believe the Wednesday becoming Thursday thing is responsible for me thinking Tuesday was Wednesday and going to a hearing that wasn't happening yet.

330 S. Wells, 330 S. Wells, 330 SOUTH WELLS ahem

I can't imagine anyone can be terribly disappointed about not seeing a person they've never met, but, because I continue to be a crap dude and not go to these, I figured I should mention:

I'm a crap dude, and I won't be there.

Sorry.

S'ok, Spiffy--we'll miss you, but we'll drink yours for you.

I think I'm going to have to sit this one out too, guys and gals. I'm not near close to being finished with today's work, and I have to be functional in the early morning... so...

Sorry! Please drink one for me.

I'll be leaving in about 15 minutes. See you there!

330 S Wells, 330 S Wells, 330 S Wells...

Special thanks to misskaz, eamondaly, crush-onastick, Iridic and sparkletone for making the trek to the new and deadly Billy Goat. The rest of you are bad people and should be ashamed of yourselves.

I still love you.

Ah, jeez, and WCityMike. Thanks a lot, Wild Turkey. Your memory-enhancing powers were much overstated!
posted by adamdschneider at 7:10 PM on September 25, 2008

Fun time again, guys. Bizzaro Billy Goat was even pretty cool and I rescind my earlier criticisms. Clearly all it takes to win me over is a basket of free fries. (But really, fries at a Billy Goat!? Weird!)
posted by misskaz at 7:34 AM on September 26, 2008

A pleasure as always. And, normally, I do not drink out of thimbles.
posted by crush-onastick at 8:08 AM on September 26, 2008

You know, I'm eating a cool blue Flav-r-Ice right now. And it is delicious.

Good meetup!

I got off of work at 10:30 last night and swung by on the way home, but it looked like everyone had left. Darn you people with your reasonable hours.

I'll say one thing for the bizzaro Billy Goat: It's nice to be able to scope out the scene without actually going inside. I didn't even have to get off my bike.

I am a bad person too.

Good news (bad news?) is I got shanghai'd into being my condo association's president. Yeah, more work and complaints for no money or thanks!
