Metafilter license plate? August 20, 2008 9:46 AM Subscribe
Oh, hi, Ohioans. It's Mefi! (Or, does a super-dedicated mefite travel on 480?)
I was driving to work this morning when I noticed the car in front of me had a license plate that said "ITSMEFI." (Apology for the lack of photos, but as I said, I was driving to work and there simply wasn't enough room in my schedule for either a collision or stalking.) Ohio vanity plates do allow for spacing, so I'm not really sure if the plate does mean "It's Mefi," or perhaps "It's Me, Fi" or something else entirely. So what's the story?

Yep, although her hair was different, that photo definitely looks like the driver.
Maybe we should invite her to join here. She'd certainly become a super-dedicated mefite once she met us, right?

She might have a little trouble when everyone tells her she's pronouncing her name wrong.

As I scrolled down her page, I saw the hit counter and suddenly felt really bad. What if she gets email from Black Planet - "Hey, itsmefi, 200 people visited your profile today!" and thinks to herself that surely, with 200 hits, this time it will work out and someone's going to come along that wants to garden with her, and go to comedy shows, and hang out with her and the three kids. And then, it's just...metatalk. Except she won't know that, and will just wonder what it is about her profile that makes people not want to say hello.

stupid Oregon only allows 6 letters instead of 7. I always wanted to get MTAFLTR or something like that, but nothing works with just 6. Simply having MEFI is kind of boring.

I don't trust anybody else's phonetic renderings anymore. I have no idea if (a) you remember how I say and are trying to spell it like it sounds and I just deplore your rendering or (b) you remember how I say it and are trying to spell it like you know I don't think it sounds or (c) whatever the heck.
I think the IPA would be /mɛ fai/ or maybe /mɛ fɐi/. It's like if you were to say "Meh! I do not like that! Fie!" but without that middle part, and the emphasis on the first syllable.

I can't read your wacky jargon and I can't remember how you speak.
Meffy rhymes with Jeffy and to me MEHFIE rhymes with "eh, pie." Which do you say again?

jessamyn,
An article in Slate today about US-Russia conflicts over separatist movements around the world begins with Greenland and Nagorno-Karabakh and moves on to Vermont.

Flagged as "super-informative", but unfortunately, amro gets it right.

Jesus, I hate 480. I'm glad I can avoid all that crap now that I work downtown and can ride my bike.
