MeFi is still a classic. August 26, 2008 6:29 PM   Subscribe

I thought for sure that someone would mention MeFi's inclusion on PCMag's "100 Classic Websites of 2008" list. So, allow me.

Although it's more than just "fun and games", I say congrats nonetheless. My favorite part of the mini-review is "Make it a point to browse the site for a while and you'll learn something, even if against your will."

Hah! That really is a perfect description of MetaFilter: learning, against your will.

Just a couple notches above YouTube! YAY!

Wow. That is pretty rarified company. Go us.

Yeah, was that in order of preference? I suppose that whether or not it's presented as such it (the order of appearance) constitutes a de facto ranking, so w00t indeed, and suck it, The Onion! Coming in after I can haz funny cat pitcherz is OK, but it is irritating to be ranked below College Humor.com.

Off topic: Does anyone still read PC Magazine?

I didn't even know PC Magazine was even still around.

Good god, is there anyone who needs to read a magazine to know about the Onion or YouTube?!

Yup, must be order of preference.

Some people prefer dictionary ordering.

Cool! Does this mean we are all A-Listers by association?

Wow, we're listed before The Onion and YouTube.

WHEN IS THE IPO? WHERE ARE MY STOCK OPTIONS? BRING ME PIE!

Yes. And they like to invest in things they don't quite understand IF YOU DON'T SCARE THEM OFF BEFORE I EAT YOUR LIVER.

Dang, if they preferred AskMetafilter, we'd be #1.

Argh!

Addictive. It's addictive, damnit!

Er, I mean, #2. But still it's first loser, and that's something!

Extra points to PCMag for not putting each site on a separate page for more ad-revenue dollars.

(Note to PCMag - that is not a suggestion)

Stay classic, Metafilter.

Perhaps the best feature is MetaTalk, where questions put to the community are thrown back in the asker's face with snark that could melt your face off. Make it a point to browse the site for a while and you'll learn something, even if it has to be pounded into your pea brain with a fucking meat tenderizer.

Magazines containing reviews of internet content - briefly relevant for a short period towards the latter half of 1998.

Yahoo! Magazine was fun while it lasted.

It never even occurred to me that they would do this in alphabetic order, because it is so much the polar opposite of the whole web experience. Wow. That's goofy, but then again I am too.

MeFi's text-only throwback front page

Words are now a "throwback."

Yeesh, is this society fucked.
