MeFi After the Apocalypse: Not What We Thought September 5, 2008 8:22 AM   Subscribe

You know, there's been fiction about Mefi post-apocalypse. But if you look at this thread and at the 9/11 thread, it'd be 180° from what's been (jokingly) suggested: man, do we pull together. (I see visions of us geographically gathering together post-apocalypse and being the only functioning society on the planet ... )

Anyway, just thought I'd share my warm fuzzy moment of the day. Thanks, Matt, for pulling this community of overall really decent people together, and thanks to all of the mods, for keeping it up, running, and within a general defined range of sanity.

Yeah, I know, not exactly a jumping-off base for controversial discussion or discussion. I just basically think it is really cool that when the chips are really down, nearly everyone drops their shit and tries to help out. That's a class of character that often feels all too rare in this world. (Lately, I'm beginning to think that a lot more people are noble than we'd think at first, though.)

Sure, once we've selected sources of meat.

Yes, after the Fall MetaFilter will be like the Brotherhood of Steel, only instead of science we will preserve snark, lest the ages to come find themselves bereft of its cold, cold light.

It would suck if actual MeFi threads were this terrible. It seems like such a bland thread, with references to Godwin thrown in simply because it's the internet. And I've yet to see someone on MeFi say they 'X-posted', or say 'Doublepost!'. But maybe that's from back in the day. Or maybe all the witty commentators are dead...

Anyway, yes, it's great that there are so many fantastic people in one place.

When society crumbles I'm heading to Vermont. I know where there's an unused bicycle and an archive of pretty much all of human knowledge.

Reading all those comments made me think back to how I felt when it all went down. I was in a security and risk management class back in college. I was about one step away from driving to New York and helping out but then they said that people should just stay home. Looking back I should have went anyways. Threads like these just show that about 95% of the population are good people that will do the right thing when needed. It's that 5% asshole population you have to watch out for.

What steps have been put in place to actually preserve some copy of all this? Is somebody using a huge machine to chisel our comments onto thin slabs of stone underground? Are we encoding the whole thing onto CDs and hiding them in Antarctica? Having the podcast signal beamed out toward deep space? Plaque with laser-engraved representations of the mods launched toward the moon? Golden record with Punch Em in the Dick encoded on it? We gotta leave some kind of permanent record, Matt.

I'm trying to find a funny comment from several months ago. It involved all of the MeFites huddled around a fire in post-apocalyptic land. We would all take turns talking about things and if anyone talked about something that had been talked about before, they'd get punished. Anyone remember what I'm talking about?

I hope the Svalbard Global Seed Vault has room for it all under its new name, Svalbard Seeds, Snark 'n' Stuff.

And I've yet to see someone on MeFi say they 'X-posted', or say 'Doublepost!'. But maybe that's from back in the day.

It was off the mark on some of lingo even when it was written. It works better as a general forum pastiche than a deconstruction of mefi at the time, which is just as well since it works for folks who aren't deep in the weeds of the local dialect. Compare with those goofy boardroom-as-internet-forum things that College Humor did.

Though it's worth noting that a lot of the specific terminology that shows up here wasn't there out of the box either. "Self-link", "double post", "callout" are among the things you won't actually find in early metatalk threads or metafilter conversations; it's a little bit of culture shock looking at those very early days.

Listen for the keening peals of women's laughter on the smoky wind, and follow your groin to my razorwire and gingerbread velvet Victorian lair, where the player piano runs a sheaf of Depeche Mode and I sit with the girls, playing Settlers and Tetris Attack, smoking homegrown and noshing on twinkies, in our char-colored salvage-constructed corsetry until you arrive.

Oh boy, when that apocalypse comes, I am running so much tail. Chaaaa-Ching.

Who runs Bartertown ?

Mattamyn. They're a unit. They even share the same name.

The little one is called Jessamyn. She's the brains.

She runs Underworld.

The other one is Matt. He's the muscle.

Together they can be very powerful...

*Mattamyn throws shit at camera*

They are also arrogant.
