favoriting comments sends me to the top of the page September 28, 2008 9:03 PM   Subscribe

Whenever I favorite a comment, the browser sends me to the top of the page.

Say I'm halfway down a page of comments, and I decide to favorite one, I click on the +, and the favorite is added, but my browser takes me back to the top of the page, and I have to find my way back down the page to wherever I was up to. This can be rather frustrating when the comment thread is lengthy.

I thought this was just how the site works, but then I favorited a comment on my work computer, and it didn't happen (that is, the comment was favorited okay, but the page stayed where it was). So now I assume this is a problem with my browser settings (I'm using Internet Explorer 7).

I've been reliably advised that 'It's likely a security setting on your browser that is preventing javascript from running to make the favorites functionality work correctly.' But having looked around in my browser settings, I'm not sure what exactly to change - and I'm not confident enough to start randomly changing settings related to javascript, as I don't understand what it is or how it works.

Any relevant direction or instruction appreciated.

Definitely sounds like a javascript problem. Which browser?

Hmmm. Sounds like a javascript problem. Have you tried randomly changing javascript-related settings?

wow. yeah sorry about that.

@ teraflop: Nice catch!

@ puke & cry: No need to apologize - I'm grateful for your interest! Anyway, to validate your question a little, it's version 7.0.5730.13 of Internet Explorer, if that helps.

@ CitrusFreak12: I've seen a bunch of javascript-related settings in Tools > Options > Security and Tools > Options > Advanced. But not knowing anything about javascript, I'm saving making random changes to the settings for when I've run out of other options.

Sounds like your browser is incorrectly following the href attribute of the link despite executing its JavaScript payload. I have no idea why that might be but it could be fixed on the server side by making the favorite href attribute point to #(comment ID) rather than #.

Or just make it a span rather than an anchor since it doesn't have a non-js fallback anyway.

@ moift: I assume your recommendations are suggestions for the admins, and not directions for me to follow. Thanks for weighing in, though.

Mine makes me go and stand in the corner without me tea until I've learned the error of my ways, so really you're quite lucky paleyellowwithorange.

Download Firefox.

If that's not an option for you, then just restore the default settings for IE.
Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced Tab -> Restore Advanced Settings.
Mine is the same version as yours, bone stock, and it handles favorites just fine. Fucks up just about everything else, though.

Thanks, carsonb, but that didn't do the trick.

On the other hand, Firefox is an option, so I'll give that a go.

  1. Download and install Firefox
  2. set Firefox as default browser
  3. remove all shortcuts of any variety to Internet Exploder.
Problem solved.

I've downloaded and installed Firefox, and this problem does not occur that browser. So, thanks for the advice, carsonb (and dg).

However, I'm still interested to know how this problem may be managed in IE, if anyone else has any ideas.

It is not a problem to be understood; nuke it from orbit.

Have you been tweaking your IE? I noticed it has 'add-ons' now. What's your security setting for THE INTERNET ZONE?

But seriously, using IE for web browsing is like using cactus for toilet paper.

Not entirely.

Have you been tweaking your IE?

Not really. Not recently, anyway. But I've only just started marking favorites this week, so the problem could be the result of some months-old tweak that is only now becoming evident in this manner.

What's your security setting for THE INTERNET ZONE?

The default: Medium-high.

It looks like there might be a bug with IE7/Vista. The problem here is that the return false in the onclick event is not stopping the browser from visiting the URL (just a # in this case) like it should. I googled around for IE7 "return false" and it seems others are experiencing this problem. Unfortunately there's no clear fix, and it's not happening for everyone. I'm hoping this is a problem that will be solved in a newer version.

I would be interested to know if the suggestion found here to uncheck the "enable 3rd party browser extensions" pref in IE7 helps anyone.

(I work on Flickr and am investigating similar bug reports today, as it so happens.)

That works! Good on you, ericost!

Now, do I stay with Firefox, or go back to Internet Explorer?

Stay with Firefox! Stay with Firefox!

Is that even a real question? Stay with Firefox or risk the scathing mockery of MeFi for all time.
