Is it self posting if my wife is involved. October 3, 2008 12:01 PM   Subscribe

I want to put up an FPP about a not-for-profit that's done something cool, and important, and I want it to get some publicity, because I believe in their mission. But my wife works for them, on a volunteer basis, in a pretty important position....

I'm assuming that it skates too close to the rule for self posting. Or does it? Can I include a disclaimer in the post?

It seems like it would violate the spirit of the self-post rule, at the least. Maybe tip someone off? Another member could post it for you.

Mister_A has the right idea. Run it past a few posters you respect and see if it piques any interest. Most likely you'll have a queue of salivating MeFites just dying to pass on your wife's work to the public.
posted by carsonb at 12:06 PM on October 3, 2008

Yeah, that's pretty much way too close for comfort; a disclaimer is a nice thought, but it'd pretty much be a lightning rod in practice—the rule exists whether you disclose or not.

If it's good, interesting work there's a reasonable chance that someone else will notice and post about it, but it needs to not be you.

Maybe posting it to Projects would be more appropriate?
posted by Alvy Ampersand at 12:07 PM on October 3, 2008

Oh, I forgot to mention that stuff on Projects are often posted to the Blue, so the odds that someone who sees it there and makes an FPP of it are pretty good.
posted by Alvy Ampersand at 12:09 PM on October 3, 2008

Yes, projects may be a good outlet for this, depending on the nature of the "something cool".
posted by Mister_A at 12:12 PM on October 3, 2008

Guys, he already has an outlet for projects.

Can't you just shout out the name of the project while drunkenly running in slow motion on a treadmill?

As I understand it, that's how how the Red Cross got its start.

I'm going to see you tomorrow night at the Moore. If you give us a shout out there, I'll post it for you.

Yeah, often if it's in Projects, someone else will pick up on it and post it to the blue.

Like, someone reading this thread.

I will most definitely give a shout to Mefi tomorrow night!

No, I think It's Raining Florence Henderson means he wants a personal shout-out to just him!

He uses the royal "us" all the time.

Kids? I know I'm older than he is, and I'm pretty sure Astro Zombie is, too. And just because I don't have my own TV show where I blow things up doesn't make me any less cool, either.

If IMDB is to be believed, Adam is a year older than me. But IMDB gets my birthdate wrong, so who knows?

I for one, think the kids should stay off of our collective lawn.

Also, why do they have to fill up our site with that damn noise? Now Tommy Dorsey, there was a real musician. I remember back in '47...

Oh, damn, thanks for reminding me that Mythbusters will be here (seattle) tomorrow. And there is still a ticket for a 3pm show, but not the 8pm show.

I think i might have to go.

So bribery is allowed to avoid the self-link snafu?

I will accept six-packs of beer.

Or: 20 dollars, same as in town.

posted by backseatpilot at 2:24 PM on October 3, 2008

Metafilter is about posting links to cool things on the internet, not to things that we support. If we allow anyone to post something just because they think it's a worthy cause, well, anarchy would result. I mean, I can't even begin to count the number of times that I've almost posted links to some of the premier Weasel-shaving-and-declawing organizations that I belong to, but honestly there's not much that would be interesting for the average Metafilter user (14 yr old, male, lives in basement, plays Starcraft religiously, never seen a girl). Those kind of things usually result in bans, or timeouts.

In summary: aww, who am I kidding? I doubt anyone would ban you, I mean, you blow stuff up for a living.
posted by blue_beetle at 2:40 PM on October 3, 2008 [2 favorites]

blue_beetle is pretty spot on. As much as I love anarchy I wouldn't try to invoke it with a borderline self-link. I think people have given you some good dieas at how else to get the word out but a direct post to MeFi is probably not the right way. You can always go put it in your profile and we can go peek at it.

I love Adam to death (in a semi-abstract haven't-actually-met-him-in-the-flesh way), but at the end of the day I'd actually be sitting around tightening up my How I Banned The Guy From Mythbusters anecdote.

Cortex, I promise not to post any dick-smelling inducing self-posts...

So the 8pm is sold out? That's cool. My wife and I already have reservations for our favorite chicken dish in Seattle after the show.

asavage, I love your show. But I have to wonder why you picked your porno name instead of your Science! name (Alistair McSmartypants) for your professional career.

It's a shame that this was posted after the latest podcast was recorded. Then the project could have been in the company of such illustrious topics as how to best apply dairy products to the human dong.

That's publicity you could take to the board meeting and brag about.

I knew I had something in common with asavage. Too bad it's merely middle age.

Wait until I make an FPP about the rendered 3-D porno images I was shown the other day "featuring" the mythbusters cast. Rule 34 strikes again.

HEY GUYS YOU'LL NEVER GUESS WHO I RAN INTO OVER IN TRIBECA THIS AFTERNOON! REMEMBER THAT ONE VARIATION OF DORITOS CHIPS? DORITOS 3D? NAMED SO BECAUSE THE CHIPS WERE CURVED INTO KIND OF A SHELL SHAPE, JUST LIKE THEY WERE THREE DIMENSIONAL? WELL, DO YOU REMEMBER THE COMMERCIAL FOR THEM WHERE THERE IS A GUY IN A LAUNDROMAT AND IT IS A HOT DAY OUT AND HE IS DOING LAUNDRY AND THEN HE SEES THIS BANGIN' CHICA WALK IN THE LAUNDROMAT AND SHE DUMPS A BAG OF DORITOS 3D INTO A DRYER AND THEN THEY SPIN UP AND START FLYING OUT ALL OVER THE LAUNDROMAT? AND SHE IS CATCHING THEM OUT OF THE AIR AND EATING THEM ALL THE WHILE STILL LOOKIN' FINE? AND THEN FOR THE FINAL ONE SHE DOES A SPLIT AND EATS THE FINAL DORITOS 3D CHIP? IMPLYING THAT IF YOU EAT THREE DIMENSIONAL CHIPS THEN MAYBE YOU WILL MEET A CHICA IN A LAUNDROMAT? WELL I MET HER (BANGIN' CHICA'S) SISTER. THEY LOOK A LOT ALIKE! I GOT HER SIGNATURE ON A CRUMPLED UP DENNY'S PLACEMAT I KEEP FOR JUST SUCH AN OCCASION

ANYWAY THAT'S MY MINOR TELEVISION CELEBRITY STORY FOR THE DAY WHAT'S GOING ON IN THIS THREAD I DIDN'T BOTHER TO READ IT YET

Tangentially related: The mythbusters thing today was AWESOME, and yes, Adam did give a shout out (to a mostly quiet room, waiting if there was a punchline). Great video clips, discussion, and amazing myths from the audience too. I was hoping to stick around and get asavage to sign my pocket reference book, but that might have to happen another time.

And the next meetup is the 25th, and appears to be involving the cal. academy of science, and drinks.
