I refuse to call this place BrisVegas October 5, 2008 8:31 PM   Subscribe

I'm in Brisbane, Australia. I'm pretty sure that out of 80,000 Metafilterites, at least three or four of you are in Brisbane, Australia also. That's enough for a "thing", but not enough for a "meet", so how about a "thing"?

I don't care when it is, or where, or even if it happens, because I probably won't come as I'm a busy guy, got a lot on. But, y'know, just as an intellectual exercise, would anybody in the greater Brisbane metropolitan area be interested in a "thing"? Probably on a weekend? At Southbank or whatever? With beer? Beer and chips? Before, I dunno, November?

Please note in advance that anybody wearing a 'Vote For Pedro' t-shirt will be drowned in the little artificial beach lake whatsit.

I'd be interested, but I have said as much regarding the previous Brisbane meet-up attempt, and did not go. Like you, I'm a busy guy, and while at one moment in time I'll be all like "Yeah! A meet up would be great!", by Friday work has killed all enthusiasm and I'm like "Fuck that meet-up shit. This weekend is my own!" For the same reasons, nights don't really work for me cos I'm usually dead tired by 5pm and I face at least a one hour commute home.

Plus I'm not entirely photogenic, so I'd be terrified of being photographed for the meet-up and having you all see my true, hideous visage rather than the safe, blurred-out B&W photo of me on my profile page.

So I will say yes, I'd totally be interested. As for actually going, though? I'll let you know closer to the event.

I'll be in Brisbane from November 17-20 for a work thing. You know, if you want to add another "maybe" to the list and you don't mind a yank.

Well, if you've got your location set right and look in your profile, you'll see there's at least 29 others in/around Brisbane. Having said that, I'm not the sociable type, so don't bother asking me. With you on the "refuse to call this place BrisVegas", though.

And Southbank could only be improved by having the bodies of 29 dead Mefites wearing 'Vote For Pedro' t-shirts floating around in that little artificial beach lake whatsit...

(I'm disappointed to learn that 'Vote For Pedro!' t-shirts aren't associated with Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Because I'd so buy one for my girlfriend, who initially nagged me enthusiastically to see the movie, before deciding she now doesn't want to. I keep threatening to take her to the cinema, buy her a ticket, tie her to the seat, prop her eyes open Clockwork Orange style, and make her watch the whole damned thing while I go shopping...)

Reading this, I'm considering moving to Brisbane.
posted by maxwelton at 12:45 AM on October 6, 2008

Well, I would be interested in a night-time "thing" in the CBD. Anything else just ends up being too hard for me. Even the last (first?) one ended up being too hard at the last moment, although that was an emergency, so I claim a one-time-only exemption. I'd be rapt to get together with a couple of MeFites for a bit of neck oil on a Friday night, but that pretty much limits my options, I know.

Yeah, people really call it Brisvegas. When they do, I have to fight the urge to poke their eyes out with a sharp stick and eat the goo that pours from the sockets. Not that I really care (I don't live here, just work here), but it pisses me off greatly nonetheless. Maybe because the place is about as different from Vegas as you could imagine.

mykescipark: ""Bris Vegas?" People really call it that?"

I've lived in Brisbane my entire life (30 years worth of it) and the first time I ever heard it was probably around 1996. I heard it on JJJ. Someone from Brisbane called in and the announcer said something like "And now we've got Jayden on the line from Bris-Vegas."

I hated it then. I hate it now. Stupid name for a beautiful city, in my opinion.
posted by Effigy2000 at 1:24 AM on October 6, 2008

I lived in Brisbane for a while. I've been known to call it Bris-Vegas. Just for any American readers.... it's an ironic moniker. Brisbane used to be a very boring large country town where the shops were closed on Sundays and there was no public transport to speak of on weekends. Simultaneously there was an incredibly conservative (some say corrupt) government and lots of fundamentalist Christians floating about.

It's probably not a fair nickname anymore...Brisbane has really grown up in the last few years... but it's still kind of funny to some people. Like me.

Well, I can't come. I'm from Ipswich (two-head-city) and therefore would be overly conspicious. But I liked how at the last one people gave me a shout-out, that was really nice.
posted by b33j at 5:38 AM on October 6, 2008

Hey, I'm a "thing"! No, wait. What I meant was, uni exams finish on November 15 and I am moving away forever in December, so I'd be up for a thing. Probably after exams because I'm busy until then. But if something got organised I might turn up anyway, I'm only student busy.

I call it BrisVegas in an ironic fashion. I can do that because I'm from Melbourne, therefore it should be understood at all times that I am subtly mocking something. Even if there's overt mockery, there's probably a hidden layer of subtle mockery that you missed.

And please Christ not Irish Murphy's, unless that's what the consensus is. My vote would actually be for the Below 7 cocktail lounge at the Hilton. Or a bench in the Botanical Gardens, with some lukewarm goon and a flyblown roast chicken, which I can't eat anyway.

So, the Plough Inn, 6pm tomorrow, right? We are all being bought drinks by jacalata, right? Looks like only four attendees, which is a bit sad, but better than nothing. I'm looking forward to it.

My comment about clothing, public servants and Fridays was centred around Friday traditionally being the day we are permitted to slough off our boring business wear and dress down, but almost everyone (me included) plays it safe. Also, by 6pm on a Friday, almost any public servant still in the city has been at one pub or another for at least 3 hours, hence the unusuality of being sober. You people need to learn some culture.

Getting together at all turned out to be something of a lottery, given that we chose a night when lots of companies are out having Christmas drinks, it was the first day of schoolies, it's Friday night and the venue was hosting a school reunion, so it was a touch busy. Add to that some nervousness on the part of all three of us about walking up to a random stranger and asking if they are a Mefite (turns out both jacalata and turgid dahlia pronounce that wrong), so I wandered back and forth looking hopeful, while jacalata watched me walk past (I didn't recognise her, despite having met). Never mind, we got together in the end, although nobody brought a camera so we can't prove it.

Had some really interesting (to me anyway) conversation about all sorts of stuff and it all ended a bit too soon. Family responsibilities call and all that crap. It was something of a surreal experience for me, meeting people that I had only ever known on the InterWeb (except for a 10 second previous encounter with jacalata). It felt like two parts of my life that have previously been completely separate converging. In a totally awesome way, but surreal all the same. Turns out there are actual human people behind those nicknames - who would have guessed ;-)

Having finally managed to pull this off, I want to know when the next one is.

I think you will find, sir, that when there are three parties, and two parties pronounce something a certain way, that's what is known as "victory by default". It's ME-FIE, not MEFFY!

I am sorry for bailing early too, but it was good to meet you both, and also those chips weren't bad, and happily nobody needed to be drowned. Well, apart from the human-shaped peanut-filled condoms behind us.

I concur that the "Do you know mathowie/jessamyn" approach is a far better one than the "OH LORDS OF KOBOL, DO I KNOW YOU FROM THE INTERNET FORUM? *Star Trek Vulcan hand sign thingy*" that I tried with that Samoan biker gang. My face doesn't always look like this, I'll have you know.

I'm so sorry I couldn't make it; it's been a shithouse last week or so, finance-wise, plus I bailed on meeting b33j in a pathetic way (so sorry for that too, my fellow Ipswichian). I was worried that I wouldn't have anything to talk about which reveals my essential lurker but if anyone is brave enough to organise another meetup then I will really do my best to make it. Like, really. I'm embarrassed to have said yes to both meetups and then not made it to either. I was on the verge of coming (censored) but in the end I couldn't find anything to wear plus the trains weren't running and my car has a severe oil leak. Oh, and I'll also blame the humidity because it made me all sweaty and unattractive. Umm, let me think of another excuse. No, I think that will do. Sounds like you had some interesting conversations and well, I have to admit to saying me-fie also (although I prefer metafilterites, being someone who has resisted texttalk for a long time) so you would have been really outnumbered, dg. Shall we try it again after Christmas?

Just because you're in the majority, doesn't mean you're in the right ;-)

Actually your "would you be looking for anyone in particular" followed by "I might be" worked all right in the end.

I will take responsibility for organising another thing after Christmas - maybe end of January or so. jacalata won't be there, having fled to the US to work for the evil empire. h00py, if you bail again, we'll come and get you. We know where you live*.

I really wanted to do this but Nov 21 snuck up on me (plus I went on a road trip to Cairns last weekend - i think it was last weekend and I'm still not sure what day it is) and the dog ate my homework, would have, if I had a dog, plus all you lot are incredibly cool. I will endeavour to kidnap h00py sometime soon so we get practice at meeting meffo's, and we will practice the art of conversation on each other and maybe even host a Mef-event in two-head city (though I think Perth is set on taking that title away from us.)

Sorry! I didn't come either; I wanted to get ready for something else on Saturday. Hope you all had fun :)

Clearly, I was not there. Trust me though; looking the way I do, I did you all a solid. You were able to keep your drinks and food down, right?
