Chicagoans: MetaMichAveMeetup on Movember 5th.

There are two proposals on the floor:

A) Will you attend the MetaMichAveMeetup at the Billy Goat on (under) Michigan Ave. at 6pm on Movember 5th?

B) Would you approve of a MonthlyMetaMichAveMeetup the first Wednesday of every month at the Billy Goat on (under) Michigan Ave. at 6pm?

Each proposal requires five YEA votes to pass. SO SAYETH THE CHICAGO CABAL*.

Technically your motions need to be seconded before you can call to vote.

I'll second his motion, with the caveat that I will never, ever be able to make one of these as scheduled

With the motions having been properly seconded...

I vote Aye for motion B.

I approve of the idea of motion A but likely can't personally attend so I cannot vote for the motion as presented.

I think it's either the 2008th of October, 2005, or, for the rest of the world, the 10th of twothousandeightober, 2005.

Me = helping.

I am theoretically down, though the Billy Goat remains a gigantic pain in the ass for me to get to.

I would propose that anyone at loose ends on Election Night meet me at Quenchers, where I will be immediately following my girlfriend's DJ shift at WLUW, which is to say, after 10:30 or so

While there is a chance Barry O will have clinched by then, I'm sure there will still be plenty of drama to be had

Speaking of the election, Chicagoans, don't forget to research the judges up for retention! www.voteforjudges.org. Don't let bad judges stay on the bench.

jtron: I'm going to try to check out Grant Park on election night, although I'm sure we'll end up bailing before any speeches are made. It's a friend's birthday so we'll be heading wherever he wants to go.

misskaz: I work right next to Grant Park and am taking Election Day off in part to avoid all the hubbub

Hey hey hey listen I approve of all this shit, but only if - ONLY IF - there is going to be someone at the goat AFTER 9 p.m.

Because otherwise, all this is just a bunch of horse-pucky, because my class goes to 9 p.m.

and one time i showed up late and everyone went to bed.

WILL YOU BE THERE UNTIL 11 p.m.?? Balrog's social life depends on it.
posted by Baby_Balrog at 4:18 PM on October 28, 2008

jtron: my first instinct was to do the same - AVOIDAVOID - but when i started thinking about the potential historical-ness of it i thought it would be cool to say i was there. we'll see if we end up bailing though.

I'm taking the 5th off of work to recover from election night, but also have some out of town friends that I have to host, so the 5th is out for me this month. Next month, bring it on!

AEY.

I mean.

YEA.

Which is to say, I can + will be there on the 5th but also can + will be there more often than I skip if we make it a monthly thing.

1.) Yea.

2.) Yay!

I did just get kicked to the curb by my employer, though, so I won't be overindulging as is my wont. I'll try to make it past 9PM with a single beer, though, B_B.

I hate voting for judges.

That is all from this suburbanite.

I am also happy to give my personal opinion of any judge up for retention before whom I have appeared. Dunno if the Chicago Bar Association guide is included in Ms Kaz's link.

AYE AYE! But please for the love of pete, can I have my whiskey in a glass, not a shot glass? Someone help me get past my communication gap with the bartender? Please?

also, my bro-in-law is employed by the campaign, so we'll be there in Grant Park for the Obamapalooza. I'm GOTVing in Indiana this weekend and voter-protectioning in the city on election day. Whew. Busy Busy

Also, sorry to hear that adamschneider. I'm sure someone will buy you a second beer.

Okay, that makes it official: both motions have passed. 6pm, November 5th, Billy Goat on (under) Michigan Avenue. See y'all Wednesday. SO SAYETH THE CHICAGO CABAL*.

c-oas: when I order whiskey I order it as "double [whiskey], neat, in a rocks glass" and get what I think you're looking for
posted by jtron at 12:06 PM on October 30, 2008

jtron: that will probably work. I guess it's part of the Goat's charm that you can't just order whiskey, no ice, and get it served in a glass.

When does planning start for the all-MeFi, nationwide, similutaneous Inauguration Day meet ups? (And by the way, can we have a Chicago meet up on the north side sometime? I can't get downtown very easily. whine whine whine)
posted by nax at 7:43 PM on October 30, 2008

I'm coming from Evanston, so any complaints about coming down from the north side are deemed null and void: red line, brown line, Clark bus, Metra. Tons of options, no excuses.
posted by eamondaly at 9:57 PM on October 30, 2008

Okay okay. (Although it's not so much transpo as time) How late does it go. I work til 8 on Wednesdays, so earliest I can possibly get there is about 9-9:30 and I've been promising myself not to poop out anymore. But I don't want to show up that late and have everyone already gone.
posted by nax at 1:28 PM on October 31, 2008

I'll be downtown for a thing at Morton's already, so I should be able to make. Sweet!
posted by me3dia at 2:28 PM on October 31, 2008

Well, we're going to try to stick around for Baby_Balrog this time, nax, so you should make it under the cutoff easily.

Thanks, crush, they kind of stuck one in my eye, but that's business for you.

WTF is "* TINCC" ??

Anyway, I just posted this AskMe about election night. If any of you can offer any advice, I'd appreciate it.

I think monthly meetups are a great idea, unfortunately I usually have Wednesday night commitments, but I could juggle it around as needed. Not like I've been to any of the recent meetups anyway... so...

I'll try to be there on the 5th, if I'm not in jail for celebrating/rioting in the event of an Obama win/loss on the 4th.

Is anyone going downtown tomorrow (ELECTION DAY) regardless of whether or not they have tickets? I'm on the waiting list for tickets but I think I'm more likely to get struck by lightning. I would like to be near the excitement and I would like to watch as much as I can in a bar or somesuch. I am NOT familiar with the area establishments so I am open to any suggestions. I'll be taking the blue line from Cumberland.

Several AskMes about this - including my own:

Looking for bars near Grant Park by wfrgms

How to attend the Nov 4th Obama Rally? by garlic

What are you bringing to the rally? by AceRock.

What's shutting down in Chicago on Election night? by melodykramer

I suppose at some point we may have to ask the mods to step in and put a stop this Obamamania... for now I'm keeping my AskMe updated with info as I come across it.

I'm for meeting up at a bar nearby - but for now it still up in the air whether I should be in line at 3pm or if I'll be able to casually stroll over, flash my tickets, and be ushered on in...

Oh, and slightly off topic, but here's a little fluff piece by David Broder about the Billy Goat (well, passingly) - which I think is an ok primer to the uninitiated on why it's such a magical, seedy place...

And I seriously need to step away from MeFi and the computer for a little bit - ugh...

I'm sorta looking forward to being in obamapalooza this evening, but I'm sorta not looking forward to not being next to a PC. I think I'll be less freaked at obamapalooza.

WBEZ said this morning that the overflow area will have a large screen TV. They also said it was going to be on the north side of grant park, while the ticketed area is on the south side. And, all entrance to the park is supposed to be on Congress.
