This thread with this comment and the follow up warmed my stoney heart.
I just wanted to share the joy. I think positive callouts are a good thing.

Callouts are bad. Shoutouts are good.
That was a cool story.

Yeah, I'm glad Sophie found it worked for her as well.
I was pretty upset for a while there about possibly not being able to take in Avatar as Jim Cameron apparently intends it; fortunately, something came up at work that allowed me to have a test run without having to shell out for an actual movie ticket, and to provide anecdotal data for other people in the same boat.

piratebowling, I think I was even more excited than Sophie was when she told me she was able to see the pictures 'pop out'. She told me that it wasn't happening at first, then it all of a sudden she was able to recognise the effect.
Really, it's been a pretty shitty thing to know that my kiddo doesn't see the world through the same eyes most others do, and possibly never will. Even worse, I wasn't aware of how bad it was until a couple weeks ago at her last opthalmologist visit.
She gave me a REALLY big hug tonight at bed time and told me what a great day it was. In the scheme of things, yeah, it was.

And now I know why my husband asked if he could gossip about my screwed up eye on the internet.

dancinglamb: My left eye's some sixty prism diopters out of alignment, and has been for the last eight years. I'm not going to get better, given the specifics of my condition (which are almost certainly not ones your daughter shares).
My job? I spend all my work time splitting my efforts between image quality control and restoration for Hollywood films, and rotoscope work on same. It's often joked at my office that if even I can tell a shot sucks, it must really suck out loud-- but I spend all day looking for the ten or so bad pixels in a couple billion with no ill effects, and my supervisors seem happy with my work.
Your kid will adapt, her brain will compensate for the parts that can't be corrected by medical science, and her specialists will take great pains to ensure that she can do and see everything she wants to see. Who knows, she might end up stealing my job someday.

Hey your daughter might up end like me, totally monocular but that's okay. She will adapt, probably get a job and a driver's license and even play sport and live her life as a normal person, just one who can't see 3D movies or those bloody 'magic eye' pictures and STILL survive as a functioning adult.
She'll be okay.

You must be new here.
It's a standard convention from the (ongoing) MeTa tagging/titling project. You must not really care about this site.

The callout/shoutout discussion is kind of deep-in-the-weeds stuff, is all.

Oh. I thought I was getting nitpicked for not stating clearly enough "callouts are for bad stuff" (which I meant) instead of, say, "calling people out is bad," because I hadn't realized the backtagging uses weren't that standard.
So. Um. Someone add the "shoutout" tag?

I continue to object to using the word 'callout' for any damn thing at all here. But that's mostly just me.
