London meet-up pretty please? December 11, 2008 9:04 AM   Subscribe

How about a London meet-up for an out-of-towner? I'll be visiting for a couple of weeks and may be lonely!

Apologies if I've missed a recent London meet-up or am missing some sort of Brit-Mefi decorum. I'll be visiting from the 22nd of January until February 4th and would love to meet up with some of you guys. My boyfriend will be working during the days, leaving me to wander around alone most of the time, so any meet-ups or other offers for companionship would be welcome! We'll probably/hopefully be staying around the Bloomsbury/British Museum area, for whatever that's worth.

The colonials are getting uppity - breaking decorum and breaching protocol again!

Sigh. I wish turtlegirl and I could be in England for the holidays again this year.

A-and will there be a pre-Xmas suppage opportunity?
posted by Grangousier at 4:55 PM on December 11, 2008

I'd be up for a beer if I'm still here around that time.
I'm sorta considering yet another move.
posted by krautland at 7:28 PM on December 11, 2008

I'd be up for it in principle - not Mondays or Wednesdays.

Can we use that magic meet up arranging tool that was linked here a while ago? Or did I dream that? I'll come along assuming I'm around. Also, could probably do lunch one of those days if you're bored, as it looks like you'll be staying quite close to where I work.

End of January is pretty bad for me. I've got my own out-of-town guests that I'm taking care of then. But, I live in the British Museum area!

All of central London is open to you, but if you need recommendations on interesting stuff to see/do thats close by, let me know.

I'm with Grangousier, pre-Xmas celebrations (or commiserations are in order). We can also do a late Jan/early Feb shindig in honour of booknerd's visit, but for the moment, how does Tuesday the 23rd sound?
posted by Optamystic at 8:03 AM on December 12, 2008

Forgive my grammar.
posted by Optamystic at 8:04 AM on December 12, 2008

I like the sound of the 23rd.

Booknerd: Do you have the hotel booked yet? My other half knows a hotel around those parts she swears by that's pleasant and very reasonable. MefiMail me if you want details.

I will probably be available as a tour guide some time towards the end of your visit. I finish work at the end of January prior to becoming an international mefite of mystery/ moving to the US (Portland, OR).

Put me down for the 23rd also. In a place they serve alcoholic beverages, if possible.

Booknerd: start a new thread in January, and maybe try to narrow down the days you want to do it, as too much choice confuses us simpleton drinkers

I also live in the British Museum area! And the 23rd of January looks good to me too.

I'm also with Grangousier and Optamystic on the pre-Christmas idea.

If the dates work for me (which they haven't for the last couple of meetups), I'm there!

(I was endorsing December 23rd)

Nuts. I'll be away, but I'd be I'm for any additional post-New Years meetup. Also including beer.

Ooo if you're going to be staying near the British Museum, may I recommend *shameless plug here* checking out the new Egyptian gallery that will be opening just a couple of days before you arrive on January 21st featuring some of the most beautiful ancient Egyptian paintings ever made (I helped out a bit with the gallery so I'm biased, but it also might make me semi-qualified to give a tour).

A January meet-up would be nice- the 22nd, 30th, or 31st would be better for me, but it's still a bit far off to say. I'm enjoying the Canadian snow right now, so I hope you all have a lovely Christmas meetup with plenty of protocol-partying and delightful decorum!
posted by Kirjava at 2:42 PM on December 13, 2008

And beer. Probably.

Now I feel really stupid.

Yes, the 23rd of December sounds good to me too.
posted by sueinnyc at 3:23 PM on December 13, 2008

I might be able to do the 23rd December. So you might all want to reconsider that particular date.

I think in London beer is always just a matter of time.

I'll be in Cornwallcestershire on the 23rd, but I'm down with a hypothetical January meetup.
posted by flashboy at 2:20 PM on December 14, 2008

January 23rd being a Friday, we could just make it the 23rd of both months. It would be easier to remember that way.
posted by Grangousier at 2:48 PM on December 14, 2008

You know, I actually checked Google to see if "Cornwallcestershire" was a real place.

Guess what ranks first?

Now I'm still not sure.

I'll be with family Liverpirkenoxton on 23rd, I'm afraid, but happy to meet in Jan if the days work.
posted by athenian at 3:31 PM on December 15, 2008

Dammit, I'm at work on 24 Dec so will have to pass on this, it'll be too late a night for me midweek.

Evening of 22nd would be great, thanks. Or early drinking on 23rd. Otherwise occupied with out-of-town train journeys.
posted by davemee at 12:43 AM on December 17, 2008

I'm happy to meet up either date, or possibly use your visit as an excuse to do tourist/wandering around stuff (male, 36, librarian; my partner is the same but female).
posted by Infinite Jest at 1:41 AM on December 17, 2008

We should probably start thinking about a venue - somewhere central-ish would be nice, or Farringdonesque or (dare I say it) with a touch of London Bridge about them - I've got to be up early on the 24th, too.

But I leave it to the connoisseurs to decide.

Pubs around then have an end-of-term feel to them, I always find.

Jerusalem Tavern?
posted by cillit bang at 2:06 PM on December 17, 2008

ooh, might be good for 23rd. Not so sure about the Jerusalem though, I've never been able to get near the bar after 5pm on a week night, it's so wee.
posted by freya_lamb at 2:26 PM on December 17, 2008

What was the name of the place we went last time? We had the whole upstairs bar to ourselves, which was nice.

D'oh! I'll miss this one - well, not so d'oh as I'm going to see the Monkey opera, but still. Hope you all have a great night, and I'll see you at the next one.

Wishing you UK MeFites (to the ranks of whom I am a brand-new addition) a pleasant evening, and regretting I can't be there to introduce myself and marvel at the strange drinking games and musical apparatus that will doubtless be manifested.

Have a grand night out!

Thanks aesop. See you at the next one.

I've just spoken to the bar manager. They are expecting us, and there will be food available.

Excellent, Optamystic. I'll be there, though probably not until around 7, unfortunately.

I'm currently getting pissed in the wrong pub. See you lot later at the right one, faculties permitting.

Still in bed with cold amid snowdrift of used tissues, so will sit/doze this one out. Have a merry kissmouse, everyone, and be careful to obey local bestiality restrictions.

There is a photograph.

Apologies for the no show. The Mustard house is still full of cold and making a last ditch attempt to shake it off before Christmas. Hope a good time was had by all, have great Christmases and I'll catch up with you in the New Year.

Ditto. I turned up early-ish and didn't see anyone and hung around for a little while, then decided I needed to be resting, so went home. Hope it was a good one, and see you for booknerd's meetup.
