Melbourne meetup December 16, 2008 9:16 PM   Subscribe

With the roaring success of the last Melbourne meetup, I propose another one.

I suggest Friday 16 Jan, in the CBD, in fact why not make it Workshop like last time (but open for debate)?

A-- Instead of office chair package contained bobcat.

I'm in melbourne until an as yet undetermined date in january, so I'll put myself down as a tentative tick.

so with "success" and "workshop" you're ignoring the failed attempt last August... but yeah, sign me up!

(jacalata - I believe that's my bobcat you've got... because this office chair certainly isn't what I ordered...)

Maybe I should attempt to get a cheap ticket to Melbourne and make it to a meetup that is in a state other than my own? I should just do it and turn up and surprise the fuck out of everyone (the fact that I'm shy and I hide behind others and just giggle inanely would be disregarded because yer all cool like that, right?) Okay, I've got it pencilled in on my diary, 16 January at the Workshop. I think I'll do it. I'll be the middle-aged redhead in the glasses.

if i am not mistaken, i was the only one who turned up to the last melb meetup.

That was why it was declared a roaring success!

What a great idea, I'll be there.

Hmm, given that I may be able to grab a cheap flight to Melbourne, and my mother-in-law will be visiting us here in Hobart on-or-about the 16th, count me as a 50% chance of being there.

As a relative newbie to Melb I was hoping for a meet-up soon, but on the 16th my band is playing here so no can do... all mefites are welcome at the gig though...
Is there another date that works? Bunglin Jones and I could do the 17th.
posted by sconbie at 6:47 PM on December 18, 2008

That would be cool.

On the door list?

I'm up. Is it worth using MeFi mail for this, as Melbourne MeFi meetups have been well, not particularly well attended, would it be worth mailing around a bit?
posted by sien at 1:50 AM on December 20, 2008

I'll be there.

Sorry, not on the door list. Tickets are $14 each.

But we will make you welcome none the less!

I'll be away. Have a good one.

I am not worried about changing the date if there is a consensus. I would prefer it on the Friday night, but could change it if there was strong support for a change.

Hope y'all had a merry christmas or happy hanukkah or whatever.

I would also support a date/time change if it meant you could get the most participants.

ie: I'm easy

Having been involved with trying to organise other internet community gatherings in the past, I reckon we stick to the originally suggested date. It seems to work OK for many of us. It's a shame that scobie & Bunglin Jones can't make that date, but trying to hone in on one date that suits EVERYONE must be nigh on impossible.

Personally, I usually don't get out of work until 9pm on a Friday, so I've already blocked out my diary and will reschedule a weekly appointment so I can make it. Saturday nights are generally easier for me. I just think we need to pick a date and go with it because it's inevitable that whatever date we choose, there will be people that won't be able to make it due to prior commitments.

That said, if the majority want to do the Saturday, that's fine by me. I think it's super awesome we've even got people considering flying in from interstate (h00py & Jimbob ROCK!)

I'm listening right now to the youtube links on Institut Polaire's myspace and I must say, they sound delightfully awesome, so I'd be up for a MelbMefi outing to see them.

Oh, and what sort of time would we be aiming for?
posted by goshling at 4:54 AM on December 29, 2008

I concur with Goshling, and am happier with a Friday night. It being town, I'll likely be there from six, unless I get an attack of the conscientiousnesses.

Also, here's a link to Workshop's website for those unfamiliar with it.

I'll be coming from work, so 6 pm. pompomtom is the one with the wild red hair. I'm the one with the beer sitting next to him.

Turns out I'm leaving for India on the 16th or 17th, so probably won't be able to make it

See! there is always someone who's lifestyle makes them impossible to pin down. Liquorice is the sparkliest fluttering social butterfly of all, far too busy to join us for a meetup proper, however she has been known to drop in on her way from one function to another to grace us with her presence. I will make a Liquorice voodoo doll and the rest of us will drink something alcoholic in your honour. Please be sure to be sitting down on the evening of the 16th Melbourne-time.

if you make it out of liquorice, that would be awesome... tasty, evil, what's not to like?

Unfortunately I'll be away. The following Friday- That would be much better.

Well let me know what the date is soon, so I can gird my loins and make it down there for it. I'll need to go for a cheap airflight. I really plan on doing this, it's one of my resolutions. It may seem daggy but hell, having something to aim for makes it easier, right? I could just continue being invisible for the next few years but that's really lazy. I want to talk to interesting people! In real life!
posted by h00py at 2:40 AM on January 2, 2009

Reckon the consensus remains for the 16th. Don't worry if you miss out, it's a cause to book another one soon!

Sorry to miss you matt.

Can't come, too busy girding loins. Also, live in Brisbane.

I'll be there around 7, I'll be male and wearing clothes. Look forward to seeing you all! (at least those who are healthy, in the right city and don't have other plans)
posted by nomis at 7:52 PM on January 15, 2009

I will also be male, will be wearing a Great Gazoo t-shirt and, I'm pretty sure, will be there first.
