Meetup of brotherly love. December 26, 2008 2:11 PM   Subscribe

Anyone interested in a Philadelphia meetup?

I didn't give enough notice last time, but this time I'm just suggesting any time mid to late January. If I need to bribe any of you, I will show up with homemade baked goods.

Also, I would love it if booze were available somehow.

Sure! Week of the 4th and the 18th are good.

I vote for the 18th, I won't be back in town until the 6th.

piratebowling, are you cheating on New York or are you in a new relationship?
posted by StickyCarpet at 5:03 PM on December 26, 2008

I'd for earlier rather than later, since I'm leaving town on the 9th (just an extended temporary leave, dear philadelphians...) but I've only been to one meetup and I skipped out early so I'd say I don't count for much anyway.

You didn't see the letter, StickyCarpet? She left it on the kitchen table where we'd be sure to see it.
posted by hermitosis at 10:32 PM on December 26, 2008

Hmmm. Later's better for me, but I can do earlier as long as it's not the first weekend, when I'll be in That Other Big East-Coast City.
posted by Tomorrowful at 8:09 AM on December 27, 2008

polexa, you still count. I sez so.

Only always. The 18th sounds like a new flavor of awesome.
Can we make it food-related this time? I like eating.
posted by Deathalicious at 2:33 PM on December 27, 2008

I can do the 18th, but not between 4 and 6:30 p.m. If it's a center city/University City thing, I can probably be there right around 6:30 or could stay as late as 3:15.

dmd and I can do the 18th.

I'm in. Especially if it involves center city and a bar.
posted by lagreen at 1:30 PM on December 28, 2008

Yay! I'll be monitoring this thread with interest. (I know I always say that, but I have every intention of actually attending the meetup this time.)

Center city and a bar agrees with me as well. Somewhere we can get Lindemans Framboise, perhaps? :-)
posted by chihiro at 4:21 PM on December 28, 2008

You can generally get things like that (Lindemans) at Monk's.
posted by Mister_A at 5:18 PM on December 28, 2008

Only thing about Monk's is that it tends to be crazy busy on the weekends, especially during the prime time hours of, say, 5 - 11-ish. Eulogy over in Old City might be able to accommodate a large-ish crowd a little better, especially since they have that upstairs area.

(I am going to do my very bestest to actually make it to a bone fide meetup!)
posted by shiu mai baby at 4:43 AM on December 29, 2008

Here is Eulogy's beer menu, fwiw, which does include Lindemans.
posted by shiu mai baby at 4:44 AM on December 29, 2008

I don't want to hijack the meetup for the sake of Lindemans! I should really just get my lazy rear over to that Total Wine place in Cherry Hill, where you can buy it by the case. :)

The first meetup I went to started upstairs at Eulogy, but so many of us showed up we ended up moving around the corner to a bar that 31d1 knew of. I can't remember what it was called, but we drank Hoegaarden.
posted by chihiro at 6:18 AM on December 29, 2008

Belgian Cafe is more pleasant than Monk's.
posted by ludwig_van at 9:24 AM on December 29, 2008

Yeah, Eulogy does not handle a group of people arriving separately, some dining, some not very well. Upstairs gets pretty cramped and the wait staff starts freaking if everyone's not sitting down for dinner together.

posted by 31d1 at 4:20 PM on December 30, 2008

You'd sell out your meetup for some fries? Sheesh. Priorities.

Speaking of fries, perhaps taking ludwig_van's suggestion of Belgian Cafe? We haven't been up in the Fairmount direction for a meetup lately.
posted by desuetude at 5:05 PM on December 30, 2008

Ack, I don't know the particulars of bars in Philly at this point, so I'm sorry I haven't been weighing in heavily. I think the idea of someplace like Monks or Belgian Cafe sounds lovely, though. Any idea which place like this is best at accommodating a group? A group that grows and shrinks?

Also, do we have a solid date set? All I ca see is we're saying sometime around the 18th, which is a Sunday. I'm guessing people would prefer a weekend night, but correct me if I'm wrong. (This is all in preparation for me putting my foot down and assigning a date and location soon, promise).
posted by piratebowling at 6:05 PM on December 30, 2008

eulogy fails. they have awesome fries, but fail at dealing with a group of people larger than 2.

pirate, we philly mefites are a wishywashy group when it comes to doing things like setting a place, time, day, etc. as thread originator, i urge you to pick a day and set it in stone, and then we can wishywash our way to deciding a place.
posted by misanthropicsarah at 9:43 AM on December 31, 2008

Okay, then. I'm calling it for the 18th, since so many people said that day worked for them. It's going up on the board.

Now, let's wishywash our way to a location, please.

Happy New Year!
posted by chihiro at 9:58 AM on January 1, 2009

Ooooh, ooooh, I second Belgian Cafe. Not only can all you drinkers get your drink on, I can consume mass quantities of those fries that I love so much. (Also, Fairmount is close to home, so I don't have to freeze my patootie off walking to and from Chinatown! Also, it's got decent space for a large-ish party.)

Alright!

WHEREAS: Eulogy was shot down for being bad with crowds, and

WHEREAS: Belgian Cafe has been seconded and thirded and offers both food and alcohol,

Any requests?

piratebowling, what are our choices?
posted by desuetude at 12:24 PM on January 17, 2009

I'm thinking for the sake of seeecrit eeeeating, it should be something along time lines of cookies or brownies. (I would love love love to use my cupcake carrier once more, but it just isn't the right atmosphere for it.)

I've personally been jonesing for peanut buttery goodness lately, and I just came across this, which looks amazing and is a cross between cookies and brownies, but if there are chocolate haters or any allergies that I should know about, let me know and I can work it out.

Snaps for piratebowling for playing Cruise Director and for making the awesomest cookies.

It was great to meet everyone. Though, I have to say it is a little odd and does sort of feel like the characters we all play on tv are somehow now meeting in this weird crossover/reunion episode. But in a good way.

I've been passed the clip-board for a February Chinatown meetup. Check local stations soon for more info. (Who am I kidding? A megamefimeetup post ought to be up and running by tomorrow afternoon, since the alternative is to, like, work or something.)

*hugs* (Cause according to the note, everyone needs one.)

i had a super fun time too, and definite kudos go out to piratebowling for initiating what is--i think--the most attended philly meetup yet.

also, who knew that mlk day was a day people got off work? i was very nervous on the totally empty train this morning, wondering if the apocalypse had come, until a coworker told me that yes, people with better jobs DO get today off. meh.

In my case, my upstairs neighbor apparently has today off; I, on the other hand, work for a company that sends out helpful emails suggesting ways we can spend the day volunteering, with a little asterisk about how we'll have to burn vacation time to do so. Around 3am, her party really ramped up and hilarity ensued.

Seriously, though. I really couldn't make it. I started driving over, and every time I braked at a light (gently, even) my car went "agagagagagagag" as the wheels tried to stop and the car went forward like 3-4 feet.
