Let's Drink Beer, Vermonters! January 3, 2009 6:51 PM   Subscribe

Let's get together in Barre/Montpelier (VT) someplace on next Saturday the 10th and celebrate the days getting longer and welcome youcancallmeal to the frozen north. Yes?

YES. Everyone that we've met up here so far has been so nice... I can't wait to meet more nice people! Even better if they're Mefites!

youcancallmeall, what the hell are you doing in Barre? My mom grew up in Barre. My nonno was a Barre carver. Drop by Del's Pizza and have some fries for me!

What if I want to call him (or her) something else? Can I still come??

jonmc: Long story, but we ditched NYC for the wilds for Vermont. Got to tell you, so far this place is awesome.

February or March 7th (both Saturdays)?
posted by plinth at 7:27 PM on January 3, 2009

Wait, Jessamyn: Didn't you mean January the 10th?

jonmc: Long story, but we ditched NYC for the wilds for Vermont.

That's sooo freaky. You've hung out with me in Queens (where my Dad grew up) and now you live where my Mom grew up. I'm hearing the twilight zone theme right now...
posted by jonmc at 7:31 PM on January 3, 2009

Damnit, I meant next weekend the 10th but was looking at my March calendar. I edited the post. I am ridiculous.

And I'll start MeMailing the usual suspects who are nearby but don't read MeTa.

The pub&brewery on main st in barre is decent. I am in.

People in Vermont are nice.

Did someone say beer? ;)

If Waterbury is within the strike zone for Barre/Montpelier, I can recommend The Alchemist.

And, youcancallmeal, welcome to Vermont.
posted by deCadmus at 9:08 PM on January 3, 2009

gah. I have a work thing that day. Otherwise, would be into it. what time are you thinking of starting?
posted by Miko at 9:56 PM on January 3, 2009

Stan, was this the place you were thinking of? We haven't been there yet, but have been wanting to try it. Would 7:30 work for folks? (And Miko: I hope you can make it! You're on my Mefite to meet list! :) )
posted by youcancallmeal at 10:04 PM on January 3, 2009

Oh sure, rub it in!
posted by cashman at 10:55 PM on January 3, 2009

I've tried to visit the Stonecutters a few times but always found it closed, so I'd welcome a chance to go there. Same thing for the Alchemist. Twice we have tried to visit and both times we were there hours before they opened.

I'll check with turtlegirl, but I am pretty sure we can make it.
posted by terrapin at 5:22 AM on January 4, 2009

Waterbury isn't really within striking distance for those of us coming from Randolph, let's do the place in Barre if it's open. I'd suggest a little earlier for those of us in sleepytown, maybe 6?
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 6:48 AM on January 4, 2009

Jessamyn is NOT ridiculous and I challenge anyone who says she is to pitted broadswords at dawn. Who knew broadswords came with pits? I may be up for a bit of a drive next weekend. Looking forward to another meetup! ( Are NH people welcome too? Miko I know, is welcome anywhere.)
posted by Hobgoblin at 8:44 AM on January 4, 2009

Sure, 6 works for me. I was thinking later = better for anyone with a drive to make, but perhaps not. So, 6 at Stonecutter's?
posted by youcancallmeal at 9:29 AM on January 4, 2009

I'm all nervous. This is the first meetup near me since I joined.
posted by The Man from Lardfork at 10:31 AM on January 4, 2009

It is winter. It is much easier to get to Barre than Waterbury. :)
posted by k8t at 10:38 AM on January 4, 2009

Heads up: Stonecutter's is apparently closing Saturday. They're supposed to be open Saturday, but it might be packed. Thoughts?
posted by youcancallmeal at 12:32 PM on January 5, 2009

yeah that's not a good plan then, what's another decent place in the Barre/MontP area for beer and decent seating?
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 12:51 PM on January 5, 2009

So, we went to Stonecutter's tonight for dinner and the waitress said that they're not closing for 4-6 months. Let's just plan on going there and if for some reason they are closed or packed, we can head to Gusto's (who has the coldest beer....well, ever) across the street.
posted by youcancallmeal at 4:07 PM on January 5, 2009

Thanks hobgoblin for the heads up about this. I'm in my usual wintertime phase of missing Maine, and wondering why everyone I meet in VT seems to be an escapee from, or has been kicked out of, Boston or New York City. This will get me out of our slum apartment, and off to meet someone from... Queens?

A wise meeting site in VT would be anyplace that turtlegirl keeps supplied with maple syrup cornbread.

Everyone that we've met up here so far has been so nice...

I can't figure that part out either, yccma. I think it's some kind of left-wing trick.

Heads up: Stonecutter's is apparently closing Saturday

Now that's power. People hear that a meetup is heading their way, and they immediately go out of business in self-defense.
posted by LeLiLo at 5:52 PM on January 6, 2009

p.s. It looks (from their website) like Saturday is the last day Stonecutter's will have live music at the place, not the last day they'll be open.
posted by LeLiLo at 12:37 AM on January 7, 2009

I too vote Stonecutters as a first choice. As terrapin says we've been trying to check it out but haven't had luck. Wow, social forays in Winter. Thanks Jessamyn!!!
posted by turtlegirl at 7:47 AM on January 7, 2009

and off to meet someone from... Queens?

Cringe. Actually, Texas by way of Baltimore and Brooklyn. Give me some credit. :)

Wow, social forays in Winter. Thanks Jessamyn!

You are welcome, this is now the third Wednesday in a row that my night class has been snowed out and as much as I love my immediate neighbors I'd like to see the inside of a food and beer place.

3-hour drive each way...hm. MeMail me if there's any chance of crashing anywhere (for 2 ppl). Still not sure whether I'll be up to it - been very sick this week, slow recovery - but would be way fun if we can swing it.
posted by Miko at 9:55 AM on January 7, 2009

Miko: You're more than welcome here if you don't mind floor. We just moved in, but have some sleeping bags that we've been using for a couch that are more than up for grabs and we live like five minutes from the bar in question. Oh, and we have cats. They're fun, but not fot the allergic.
posted by youcancallmeal at 12:35 PM on January 7, 2009

My place is always a crash space option, I have cozy closet guestroom as well as bigger/comfier futon option but in the open living room. Assume you can crash here if you want to.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 12:35 PM on January 7, 2009

Final word on Stonecutters: They are closing this weekend. They're saying that there'll be a band and party sort of thing Saturday, so we can either see how that goes or wander elsewhere. Mefi scares another bar into closing, I guess.
posted by youcancallmeal at 7:43 PM on January 7, 2009

Damn. I have drill with my National Guard unit this weekend. I really want to go to this, too. Next time!
posted by C17H19NO3 at 11:44 PM on January 7, 2009

Yes, according to this article in the Times Argus, the place is closing Saturday.

Miko, turtlegirl and I would love to have you two stay with us. Guest room with own private bath sound enticing?

MeMail me.
posted by terrapin at 5:25 AM on January 9, 2009

Heck, we haven't rented the new apartment yet, so you COULD stay there if you want :)
posted by terrapin at 6:03 AM on January 9, 2009

Wow, thank you for the very tempting offers! At this point, it looks like we will be a no show for this weekend. Not due to lack of interest, but due to my raging cold that has settled in my chest and makes me very bad company. I need to stay home recuperating because I feel that teetering-on-the-edge of bronchitis thing coming on and I haven't been able to slow down at work enough to take it easy.

BUT. We would like to visit VT this winter - LT is bent on exploring Burlington, and I think it would be so nice to visit some of y'all Vermonters if we were to go to Burlington for a weekend. So I'll be in touch!

Miko:

Feel better and let us know if you make it this way soon.

Turtlegirl and I are discussing having a Summer Solstice camping party this year.

Miko: from Nov.—May I live seven miles south of Burlington, if you need a base camp in the vicinity. It is a fancy rich people's suburb called Shelburne, which pretends to be a quaint VT village; we reside in one of the few slum-type triplex apartments for miles around (way too expensive — in addition to being run down — but near the school where my wife teaches, and which my son attends).

There is not much extra room in the place but once, at the end of a long band tour I participated in, we fit the whole sextet in here, so I'm sure we could find space for you (and yours) somewhere.
posted by LeLiLo at 1:07 PM on January 9, 2009

Having become more fully awake, I see that terrapin's apartment — although more removed from Burlington — looks about 1000% nicer than our place.
posted by LeLiLo at 1:12 PM on January 9, 2009

I wish I could be there this weekend to share in the fun. Luckily, there will be a blues-jam meetup in Boston the next day! Someone say hi to Jessamyn for me! :)

I just uploaded my photos.

Very nice pix. Was great to meet and re-meet and welcome newcomers to the Northcountry. The drive home in the snow was not so bad. And now to bed.

Wish I'd noticed this and been able to make it. I'll be at the next one, I'd love to meet all you neighbors.

Quite a slow night for camera operating (even though we all seemed to have one); I only took about 75 photos, a few of which are now online in memory of this pleasant time seemingly had by all, despite single (?)-digit temperatures. (I see that currently it’s 3° F. in Barre.)

My favorite moment of the evening: Jessamyn, talking about Friday's old people dancing post, turned to Hobgoblin and me and said, "Well, not as old as you guys."

I even had fun afterwards, driving home at 70 mph on an ice- and snow-free, almost deserted I-89 (only four cars on my side between Barre and Williston), listening to one of the first records I ever bought (45 years ago!) Monk's Dream.

Ah, moonlight in Vermont...
posted by LeLiLo at 11:22 PM on January 11, 2009

I stole Monk's Dream from my dad's collection when I was in college and just starting to get into jazz.

Great seeing you lelilo! Was a wonderful surprise that you made it.

I said OLDER than you guys, geez. How did your movie of that One Man Woodstock guy turn out? Nice photos lelilo.

That One Man Woodstock guy was perfect. I loved him. I worried about what would become of him, but I think he's gonna be fine. He's got the Keys to the City.

How did your movie of that One Man Woodstock guy turn out?

It's way too dark; I'm trying to figure out if I can lighten things up with various movie programs I have (and don't really know how to use). it's also 24mb, so I'm not sure how to email it over to you.

p.s. Speaking of Woodstock, which as we all know really happened in Bethel (NY, not VT), I don't know if you guys heard me tell terrapin that on my road trip with the Maine 5th and 6th graders last month, in Woodstock NY, I happened upon the real 'one-man Woodstock.'
