Los Angeles Meetup: I say it's time for another, don't you?

I don't know when and I don't know where (though miss lynnster did express amusement at the taxidermic skunks that spray steam from their asses at Stinkers). And klangklangston will surely pop in to rant about driving east of La Brea. But hopefully we can figure our shit out in this thread before we all space out and forget about it!

Can I be the first (and possibly the only one) to suggest downtown? Coz that's what I do on L.A meetup threads...

Anything to promote the bayareacansuckit tag.

I might be able to make it. I'll be staying near 3rd and La Brea, I have no idea about the lay out of LA, but it looks like Wurstkuche might be doable. The only thing I ask for is a sighting of SamRo/Lohan when I am in LA. If this meetup could provide that it would be two birds with one stone.

La Brea? It is literally like being skinned and boiled in carbolic acid to venture east of Robertson.

No, seriously, my problem is more when folks are like, Let's meet up in Boyle Heights at 5pm on Wednesday! It's the combination of long drive, late work, early mornings and fear of DUIs that limit my participation. Well, that and the schadenfreude of seeing LA meetup threads where only the organizers show up. It helps balance out the pain of nearly ever adolescent birthday party I had where I was that lonely kid in the cone-shaped hat.

I'd suggest the Daily Pint again, with maybe food from the pizzeria a couple doors down (though I haven't tried their slices), but that's west of me. Scotchy scotch scotch though.

Or maybe have Annette come up with a place around Santa Monica and Fairfax?

I guess it comes down to what y'all want to do as a group. Eat? Drink? Mini-golf? Strip club?
posted by klangklangston at 7:32 PM on January 20, 2009

There're also a couple of art fairs this weekend, so lots of openings (in Culver, Santa Monica and Downtown).

I can only imagine a Metafilter meetup at the strip club going poorly when the requisite heated debate over the moral, social, political, economic, and academic implications of having the Metafilter meetup at the strip club annoys all the strippers to no end.

Wurstküche is FANTASTIC. Great food, great beer. Except that I can't make it Friday or Saturday (festivities at the museum for the opening of the show I've been working on).

I would LOVE Thursdays, and I can make Wednesdays reeeeeally late (after 10) what with my classes at USC right around the corner. If we do either of those days, one thing I would really find convenient would be a floor to crash on, because I'll be flying solo. My Saturdays are pretty heavily booked for the next motherfucking month and this Friday is also out.

Does anybody like karaoke in Koreatown? For next time, maybe? I would also really like a museum field trip! I haven't really done any LA museums yet. Also I want to go see the Magna Carta in Simi if any of you want to go with or make a day of that or whatever. Also I'm planning a badminton tournament. And a game of Diplomacy. In person. Old school dorkout.

How were the tips?

Not bad! Hers were probably a little better than mine, what with the sexy librarian thing she's got going on.

(What's this opening you're talking about?)

The exhibition I've been working on officially opens on Sunday (the book I was complaining about editing for the better part of the past year is available here), with events on Friday and Saturday night.

Space Kitty: the fries at Wurstküche are indeed wunderbar, with your choice of all sorts of yummy sauces.

Anyone want to propose a date? I realize that it's probably a pain in the ass to take Friday and Saturday out of the equation, so if either of those really work best for everyone, have fun you bastards. Otherwise, I'd be up for any time next week.

I would also really like a museum field trip! I haven't really done any LA museums yet.

I'm happy to act as unofficial tour guide at LACMA one weekend (though not this one). I'll even buy everyone's coffee in the cafe with my discount.

Wow, I'm also impressed with that place's selection of non-alcoholic beverages. I thought that cucumber soda would be my eventual contribution to the world, but no, there it is.

Here's a vote for a Thursday soon for the wiener meetup and any day other than Sunday 2/1 for LACMA. No, not because the Cardinals are actually in the Superbowl... I'm going to Disneyland!
posted by carsonb at 11:22 PM on January 20, 2009

There is actually a chance I may attend, as I am being dragged back to the San Fernando Valley before the end of the month by an aging father with a broken leg. Considering that crotchety old dude (without physical impairment) was one of the reasons I moved to SLOtown in the first place, and I am already already dealing with my own infirmities, I will probably be in desperate need of MetaMoralSupport - more motivated to attend than the last time I said "maybe", but mess mobile. Wurstküche sounds like the bestküche, but how's the parking situation? If I have to hobble more than 50-60 yards, I will become one of those guys passed out on 3rd Street... I will consider a ride with any generous soul who is not notorious as the Last to Leave a Meetup.

Set a date based on the rest of youze guyz's schedule (the crotchety old dude's discharge from the hospital is not yet set), and I'll see if I can plan A BIG ENTRANCE.

So, I am totally up for a LACMA field trip. Likewise Karaoke (although I have a long standing K-Town Karaoke plan with a friend and if these two are within a week of each other then I'll have to pass as I can't do too much Karaoke). I'm also very much up for beer and sausages.

Lastly, as we're throwing out ideas -Klangklangston didn't you have a plan to go to The Smell sometime? It sounded like fun...

why "Germanys" and not "Germanies"?

Because the rule about changing "y" to "ie" before an "s" to make the plural doesn't apply to proper nouns. (And yep, not everyone follows this rule; it actually took us a few months of arguing -- and quoting of style guides, photocopying of articles from the New York Times, etc. -- to get all the authors to agree with us on this score. Such is the thrilling life of an editor!) The example I used was when I get together with my family, we're a room full of Codys, not a room full of Codies. But if we've each brought a puppy with us, we've got a lot of puppies.

February 8 is good for me for a LACMA shindig.

Next Thursday is also fine for Wurstküche for me, f that works for enough other folks (The World Famous, is next week bad for you?). Street parking for Wurstküche was a little sticky when I was there a month or so ago, but that could be because it was a Saturday night, so it may be better on a Thursday. The area is a former warehouse district that's now primarily condos/art galleries/restaurants.
posted by scody at 8:35 AM on January 21, 2009

Next Thursday, like the 22nd, tomorrow? Can't do it. NEXT Thursday, like the 29th, I could do because I get every other Friday off in exchange for working these shitty hours (8:30 to 5:50). I doubt Amy could make it, which would be a shame, unless I cajoled her a bit to fuck with her schedule.

I'm always up for LACMA because my mother went back to art school while I was an adolescent, so I got to go to all of her museum field trips and thus am nearly always up for seeing art (though I do warn people that I can be kinda brusque regarding the wandering).

When's LACMA's free night again? Didn't they just change it to make it harder for the plebes to see great art?

Also, the Getty's on my side of town if'n y'all ever want to come up with a car pool or something.

posted by Space Kitty at 9:36 AM on January 21, 2009

Yep, I meant NEXT next Thursday, the 29th.

General admission is free (well, it's pay-what-you-wish, really) after 5:00 every night (minus Wednesdays because we're closed!), and free all day on the second Tuesday of every month. (Free admission doesn't include specially ticketed shows, for which you always have to buy a separate ticket.) There's also free holiday admission on MLK Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day.

A Getty field trip one of these days soon would be great, too!

This is the point in the thread where I say I'll try to make it (and I will really try) but until the end of February, Tuesdays and Thursdays are bad for me-- next Thursday in particular. But one should never ever plan around me. If I can make it, I'll be there.

However, my wife and I are totally down for LACMA on the 8th.

Sounds good. Do we want to settle on a time to meet? (Also, Ambrosia Voyeur mentioned brunch first; there's Mani's on Fairfax, which I love, but they're small enough that it might be tricky if there's more than 6 of us. The only other brunch-y place right near the museum I can think of is Marie Callender's on Wilshire.)
posted by scody at 7:38 PM on January 21, 2009

I'm not too picky about whether we eat together or not, or what time, though I guess I'd say about 11 to eat would be good for us out-of-towners. There's another brunchy place that is nearby and well-reviewed, Cafe Verona on La Brea. How many of us are interested in the LACMA trip to begin with? Maybe if we are legion we could just meet in the Museum cafe. I do love a little prandium before the practicum.

posted by Space Kitty at 9:06 AM on January 22, 2009

Okay, let's say Cafe Verona at 11, and if it's too small for the group, we can just trickle through, a small table at a time, and re-meet at the museum.

scody, would that work for you? Will you be coming to eat or should we look for you, craning our necks up any towering vertical ceiling supports within the museum to assess their likely legness, once we get there?
posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 9:32 AM on January 22, 2009

Sounds good! Knowing me, I probably won't decide on brunch till that morning -- I'll text Space Kitty to let her know if I'll see you at the restaurant or just meet everyone at the museum. On that note, what time should we aim to gather at the museum (in the event other folks decide to join in post-brunch)? If brunch is around 11, maybe 12:30-ish?

For a gathering point at the museum, the easiest spot would be in the entrance pavilion (behind the Chris Burden "Urban Light" sculpture) where the ticket booths are. (Sorry I can't get everyone in for free.)

That was, like, maximumly tubular and most radical.

There were several high points, but the clincher for me was finally seeing my first Bridget Riley painting in person and it was one that I'd always wanted to see. She's an obvious influence on much of the visual art I do, and getting to see that was possibly as close to a religious experience as I've ever had. I know I don't need to apologize for getting absolutely absorbed in something I like at an art museum... but besides thoroughly savoring the eye-brain screwiness of such a massive and optically active art piece, I was also watching the reactions of other people as they came around the corner and were stunned and dazzled by the painting. People seem to either flee from it or run up to it like they want to dive in. I loved being able to see the pencil marks on the canvas and the slightly dirty and worn corners around the frame on the raw canvas just making it all more real.

Hi and thanks to all. AV and contraption who hosted not one but three - wait, no four - random people from the internet over half a week while hosting a raging hot cocoa party and especially scody for the guided tour of LACMA. I also finally met eyeballkid and klangklangston and not a one of us was punched in the dick. Don't let them fool you with all that angry keyboard jockey crap, they're affable fellows.

LA still sucks though. Well, that's not true - not all of it. Actually, it's mostly just the cars that suck. It's a wonder anyone in LA has a butt left from sitting on it in traffic. I grew up there and I think my butt is going to be asleep for the rest of the week - and I never even really experienced a true freeway 405-through-Wilshire/LAX-kind of clusterfuck.

Look, you have your people call my people and we'll talk about launching an interactive ARG buzz campaign flashmob where most of you get an email telling you where to drive your car for "re-education" where it'll be trained through the wonders of crushing, shredding and recycling so it can be part of a truly massive and lovely modern high speed regional and local mixed rail system that's actually functional and nice to look at like LA used to have not all that long ago before some company or other killed it to sell more vulcanized rubber tires.

Only tourist take the freeway... you should know that. Emptier side streets are where it's at, man.

It's true. We had a six mefite household (three are permanent). And then my parents decided to get a divorce and my laptop broke and my 10 year old boots sounded their death knell. That was Saturday. But my oh, are meetups and art enormously curative. Then loquacious left and I had to turn to Coraline in 3D for comfort. Which was surprisingly effective. Highly recommended.

So, anyway. Pics up. Friday the 13th I might want to catch the double feature Fassbinder/Herzog back at LACMA. Or the scotch sippin'. And please note that I meaning to share the insider info on USC's Critical Studies screenings. My division puts out a list of all the films shown for classes for the whole semester. I gave Carson one. There are 4-9 a day. Free movies, many on 35mm. Some with me sitting watching them. For example, this Wednesday, The Day The Earth Stood Still doubled with It Came From Outer Space in 3d, both on 35mm. I'll be sitting there, getting paid $9/hr. Hit me up and hang me out to dryyyy. LA rain is so very cool.

Ooooh. When I'm unemployed (which is gonna start happening again come next week) I'm *so* up for free movies.

I'm going Wednesday, and the Thursday matinee is tempting as well. La Jetee at 10am, lunch somewhere, and then either Donnie Darko or The Godfather Part II at 2. Hooray for free movies!

Sorry that the Mister and the Munchkin and I didn't get to stay longer and chat with all you nice folks, but the wee one was getting tired and needed his nap, so we left LACMA early. But it was a nice time, and we'd like to do it again one of these days.

Aww, but it was cool having brunch with the Mister and the Munchkin. I'm glad I showed up for this one.
