Feeds problem February 7, 2009 8:28 AM   Subscribe

Since the "troubles" all of my MeFi feeds have been messed up - posts are being identified in several different feeds etc. Is the best course of action to wait for things to correct themselves as the deployment wrinkles get worked out or delete the old feed addresses and re-add now that the new servers are deployed?

Mikel, what do you mean by "posts are being identified in several different feeds etc.". What exactly are you seeing?

My data point to contribute: my feeds look fine, in Google Reader.

mikel, what feed reader are you using?

I got a bunch of old posts thrown at me in Google Reader on Jan. 24th, but from then on it's been behaving normally.

I use FeedDemon. After the server move, all the category feeds from AskMe stopped working for me, though other MeFi feeds were fine. Deleting the category feeds and resubscribing sorted them out, with the exception of the computers & internet feed. This probably wasn't working because it doesn't validate. Turning off FeedDemon's error checking for the feed let me add it again, though.

Mikel, you might make sure that you're subscribed to the official feed URL:

MetaFilter: http://feeds2.feedburner.com/Metafilter
Ask MetaFilter: http://feeds2.feedburner.com/AskMetafilter
MetaTalk: http://feeds2.feedburner.com/MeFi/MetaTalk

We moved most of the main feeds to feedburner at some point in the last couple years, and those are the "official" feeds that will work best. We should be redirecting older feed URLs to the correct place, but there might be some feed URLs from the past that aren't updating properly. It might be a good time to make sure you have the latest URLs.

Thanks for the heads up xchmp, that feed should be validating now.

I'm using the current NNW - but I just checked and the feed addresses I was using are wrong - probably just very old. Will update.

During the server switch the MetaTalk feed redirected to MeFi proper somehow. I deleted and readded it and now everything is peachy.

Since the "troubles"...

Now now, let's not blame the IRA.

Hey, that image is from Samurai Showdown! I just got the NEO GEO pack for my playstation, and y'know what? Most of those games really sucked!

Just be thankful you haven't had to deal with the feeds since the Tribbles.

I found that at one point during the "troubles" my feedreader decided to change the URL of the Mefi Music feed to the main site feed. I undid that and it's been happy since. Perhaps the same's happened to you? Check and see if the feeds for the subsites that are misbehaving are the URLs you expect.
