Is it just me, or does the front page really suck lately?

And let me be the first to say " It's just you". Now can we get on with it?

Oh this should be a doozy.
posted by gman at 8:24 PM on March 12, 2009

I've been staying up later than I should this week because I just couldn't stop browsing the links.

So no, for me it's been better than usual lately. Good to the point of damaging my health.

Oh, also, when making statements like that it's usually better to make some sort of rational case.

How does it suck? When was it less sucky? What makes for good links? What trends have made for a bad spate of FPPs? And so on. Right now it's just: MeFi is teh suck, amirite?

Are you unhappy with the quality of your distractions? You should share with us what you would prefer to see. Maybe we can have a Sluglicker Day, full of posts you like most of all.

Eight posts a day about games and comics?

Huh. I've been having the opposite problem lately: there's so much good stuff being posted these days that it's sometimes hard to slow myself down to catch all the amazing. But, you know, the quality of the front page goes up and down, like always. There've been some great days recently and some dull ones. But there's almost never more than a half day's worth of dull before another batch of amazing stuff comes through, so yeah, it's probably just you in a bored cycle.

Go find a couple of other sites for a while.

I guess I'll put get in here while it's still open: even if the front page does suck, it would help you make your argument if you explained yourself a little more specifically.

Actually I kind of like this idea. Every day, one deserving MeFi member gets control of the front page. But I guess that would change the site and all.

...one deserving MeFi member...

Bit hard to qualify something like that.

Guess I'll be saving my "Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War by Kirt Busiek & Norm Breyfogle" post for another time.

I always though vasectomy time was more like a weird cage match.

One man enters, zero men leave.

Apologies to any vasectomied men, I'm only going for the laugh. You are obviously still men.

mediareport, you're not accurately paraphrasing me. Read the title of this post and that is my criticism.

Dude, you haven't exactly been making a good-faith effort yourself lately. I'm glad you at least aimed for Metatalk this time, but could you please either elaborate on what exactly you're going for or acknowledge that you don't intend to?

Right now this just looks like bored or angry flailing with you trying to start a fight, and it's hard to give you much benefit of the doubt under the circumstances.

That's my fault, sorry. Sometimes I forget and leave the suck tag open when I post, and it cancels out the awesome tags.

I thought that was pretty good. "Where was his mind at?" you might ask. I wish I could tell you. These things just come to me, like stomach bugs and final notices.

Homer was complaining about the degeneracy of his times in approximately 1000 B.C. If he lived today and was a MeFite he'd probably start MeTa threads like this one.

cortex, like i said above, my criticism is stated in the post title and if you look at the tags, you will see what I would like FPP's to be. What I'm seeing is self-absorbed posts, striving to be more obscure than the last one and somehow garnering recognition without thought to what positive effect it has on the reader. You and others will either agree or disagree with my valuation. I've simply stated what I think is true.

I thought there was a heap of good links on the front page today.

And this week of crazy stupid grandstanding on MetaTalk is just a bonus, I suppose.

Sluglicker : "be the change you want to see in the world," dude, and make an awesome FPP that has all the qualities you find lacking right now. It'd be a much better use of your energy than this.

Seriously, go do it right now. Posts start drying up at night, which is lame for insomniacs like myself. Lead by example!

I think that would be the case if there were lots of posts about how Mrs. Beavish keeps stealing my newspapers, and how I've taken to getting even by pooping on her lawn at two a.m., but I think that people posting about things they have an extensive knowledge about that others may only know tangentially is interesting.

I don't believe you can claim to have reasonably explained yourself with your post title and tags without participating in the same willful obscurantism you seem to dislike.

That's really not elaborating much at all. I'm not sure what you're hoping for here, but if it's just to declare your opinion and then refuse to discuss it, I don't think we need a metatalk thread for it, and I certainly don't need to lose sleep worrying about this getting extra weird over night.

Please consider whether or not you're actually looking for a community discussion rather than a weirdly-taciturn soapbox next time you're considering making a post in here.
