Has anybody else just received a MeFiMail from a spanking-new member?

I'm reluctant to link to his profile because it all smells a bit like Potted Meat Product and his username is his site's name. (If he's way out of line, I don't want to put any linkbait here) I'm mostly concerned that, rather than picking out a few 'likely suspects' (and everyone knows I'm am quite unlikely), he may have found a way to do a Mass MeFiMail, which would not be good. My apologies if he's (relatively) innocent.

We have some checks in place to help thwart any sort of mass mail with MeFi Mail. If you're having trouble with this particular user, hit the "Block this sender" link at the bottom of any MeFi Mail. You won't receive messages from them again. And if enough people block a specific member, it'll hit our radar and we can take the appropriate action.

Since your report was vague, you might also send a note via the Contact form with more details. That's probably the best way to report something like this.

Maybe he started at #1 and has finally worked his way up to you, #206.
posted by UbuRoivas at 1:05 AM on March 29, 2009

It was more scratching-my-head odd than anything else. And if it was an awkwardly-worded personal message, I wouldn't want to make trouble, but if it's an awkwardly-worded form letter, I would. And I just want to know if it's just me or if others got MeFiMailed from a user who had just joined hours ago.

Anybody?

I get so little MeFiMail from anybody for any reason, it just felt extra weird to get something from a total newbie (whose site is selling stuff using a classic Web1996 style).

If it was the same user I received the unexpected MeMail from, it was in response to the comments in this post from eight months ago. It is as if the site owner just came off an extended road trip, checked his server tracking logs all the way back to when he fired up the Winnebago, noticed the huge spike of traffic on August 18th, then took offense enough to sign up for an account and blast all those who participated in the thread. Heh.

Geeze, if you're going to make a callout, at least post the dirt. And if you don't want to make a scene, why not just email the mods? They can check the user's sent messages, which would be a lot more efficient than a metatalk poll.

And Wendell, if you check the original thread there aren't that many of us, so I wouldn't be surprised if the guy really did email each and every one of us individually as opposed to it being a bulk mail thing. My email also referenced some things I'd said specifically, so I really think it was that each of us got an individual email rather than a bulk-mail thing.

Your wife is quite pretty. She is home alone with the children from 5:30 to 6:45, when you get home, isn't she?

Speaking of the children, so you really think it is wise to let them wait at the bus stop alone from 7:13 to 7:16 in the morning?

Your wife has been wondering why she is always running out of conditioner. Do you have to use so much when you masturbate in the shower?

Hiding your house key may under the third rock to the left of your back door may not be wise.

Sweet dreams. I'll be in touch.

Blazecock Pileon: I recommend to all Mefites that you take your email address out of your profile

Is the option to show email on by default for new users? As MeFi grows, I'm more concerned about the gradual uptick in spammers we've seen. Apparently, the base of identifying contact info available is worth the $5/human-being hassle, which probably means there's a lot to be had. Is there anything stopping someone from just rolling through a sequence of requests to http://www.metafilter.com/user/[X]?

He wrote that he's never been to the Worcester Art Museum; somebody sent him that stuff.
posted by Kirth Gerson at 8:00 AM on March 29, 2009

What (shudder) Facebook does is not list the email as actual text but as an image, which at least puts a small hurdle in the way of someone trying to script things. At the same time, be sure there's scriptable command-line OCR software for just that kind of thing, so the obfuscation might become more of an annoyance and server load than protection against spammers.

Man, it's hard to know where to peg this on the continuum from Just Really Weird to genuinely Sketchy. Is there anything particularly shitty or abusive in the messages, or is it just basically "no u" re: his site?

Regardless, that's definitely way outlier behavior for what mefimail is for, yeah.

If anybody has anything in particular they're concerned about as far as the mail they got, please let us know via the contact form. I don't know if new guy has an intent to do anything on the site besides what he's already done, but we'll keep an eye out.

Not in my case; mine came across as mildly snarky "if you like that other site you mentioned why don't you go back there" complaining about my critique, and I responded with a fuller explaination of what I meant and offered some construtive criticism. I got the sense from the site itself that this was someone who doesn't quite get Internet culture, and the email seemed to confirm that.

I don't have a driving need to make a complaint as such, cortex, but I'd be happy to forward you the email I got if you want to take a look as part of an overall evaluation of the situation.

Anyway he began his email "Hey Stupid," which in my case is either abusive or charmingly familiar. Then there was some criticism ("I bet you haven't done anything in your life to make a difference have you?") followed by the always welcome advice on improving myself.

Bottom line: HAHA I GOT MEMAIL!!!!! AHAHHAHAHAHAHAH

My personal ideology is the exact opposite of Brandon Blatcher's. I like it when people can find me through my profile page, but then I like crazy people. I used to have my phone number listed in plaintext. For a year. No one ever noticed or randomly called so I took it down as I didn't want it in the googleverse any more.

I also welcome stalkers at the geolocation indicated in my profile. Wear sensible shoes and bring a sweater or a jacket. It gets breezy up here.

loquacious: I like it when people can find me through my profile page

Same with me. It's ridiculously easy to find my contact information if anybody wants to be bothered. I note that I have been stalked, and recently too, but none of the stalking was in any way enabled by the internet. On the other hand, I have a close friend who was stalked and horribly too. She found out that three different people in her life, an old friend she had kind-of pushed away when he got creepy, a new friend and a publisher who'd hired her to write for a magazine were all the same person. She got threatened with violence. She had to abandon all her old internet identities and set up new ones. So I'm aware that it's not an idle concern that this information can be used with ill intent.

....He just emailed me again. The read I get, more and more, is that he really, really doesn't get how the Internet works. On the one hand, he was complaining about how other sites got a lot of donations of pictures and such, but he didn't, and wasn't it a shame that they didn't want to promote america (I pointed out to him in my response that, er, his site mentioned that he only features sites he'd visited), and on the other hand he said something vague about other sites wanting to charge "300 to 500 per page" for a feature mention, something which I'm not even sure I comprehend what he meant.

I suggested he find a web publisher or web marketing guy who'd be willing to be taken to coffee and have a chat with him about Web Site Design/Conceptual Development 101 and help him figure out what exactly the hell he wanted to do.

But reporting in because this is a second email, in case anyone needed to know that. He sounds harmless, just....really, really ignorant of how the Internet works.

I've written the mods and it's late, so they probably haven't seen it yet. And it's sensitive stuff, bound to engender controversy and the usual spectrum of MeFi opinion from absurd to ridiculous to obnoxious. So actually, I would rather not explain it by memail, but I'm sure my Google chops are no better than yours, and I figured something concerning out about this guy in about 10 minutes of searching. So go for it.

I predict it will be revealed in this thread by tomorrow, by someone, but not by me. And then we will have a 1200-comment Metatalk thread for the ages. I do hope the mods close this thread before that happens.

So, yeah, I'm going to go ahead and close this up. As far as the bizarro mefimail event, it seems like we have a pretty clear idea of what happened at this point. We'll keep an eye on dude to see if he keeps up with the weird behavior, and if folks continue to get weird or unwelcome mefimail from him, please let us know. But I don't want to leave this open overnight for open-season whatever-may-come, frankly.
