Let's hear it for popechunk! April 5, 2009 8:09 PM   Subscribe

I'd like to point out popechunk's conduct here as being an exemplary...um...example of how to have a reasonable and informative disagreement on MetaFilter, and elsewhere in general.

Really man, class act. You handled even some of the nastier stuff pointed your way with exceptional grace and candor, and I'm sure you knew going into that thread that taking the position you did would bring out the pile-on. Let's hear a round of applause for popechunk! So, when are we going to see your first FPP?

Did you just call out your own borderline-GYOB post in MeTa? I think popechunk is a class act, but that whole thread gave me a stomachache.

No offense to popechunk, who did in fact remain civil in a situation that often leads to even more unpleasantness, but I don't think we're at a point where we need to use the gray for celebrating behaving like a grownup.

MeTa is really going downhill. I remember when call out meant pitchforks, pile-ons and random acts of hate. Now it's all hugs and care bear countdowns.

Jessamyn's concerns about that thread notwithstanding, I agree that popechunk was a class act. Kudos!

Ordinarily, Tomorrowful, I would agree with you, but that is a gun thread. Rational discourse in a gun thread, an Israel/Palestine thread, and for a few other hot button topics, is quite an accomplishment, most especially when you're in the minority. If you don't believe me, pick any random gun thread, then go in and try a stance where you are pro-Second Amendment. It's tough.

So, thanks, Popechunk.

I was noticing Miko's customary equanimity in the face of getting shouted at by Flunkie for no readily discernible reason in this Jesus thread today too, with much approval.

The old saw that 'Metafilter does not do discussions about X well' (where X is one of the usual hotbuttons) is not as true as people suggest it is. It really is all about making the conscious decision to stay calm and reasonably respectful and seek common ground rather than get puffed up and resentful and focus on differences (the way our chickenshit conflict-dependant media encourages us to do).

Which may be facile, but it's still true.

Oh, absolutely; Miko deserves a week's worth of MeTa threads for general awesomeness.

Maybe he didn't leave. Maybe he angered the mighty librarian god who, annoyed by having to look up from her book, struck him dead with an quiet "SHHH"

Really, baphomet, don't leave over a gentle chiding (for metatalk). I too felt that your post had a bit too much editorializing, but I enjoyed taking part in the relatively calm discussion.

Huh, yeah, I'm not sure what's up with that either.

Following up ortho's "It's a massacre of suicides!" post which had itself become essentially a gun control argument with a thread about mass shootings that pretty much shouted GUN CONTROL ARGUMENT was I think a little bit extra tiring from the mod side. I didn't dislike the post as a round-up of this stuff and think it's an interesting (in an awful sort of way) collection, but timing-wise it felt a little weird and it was a little GYOBish for all that, so I'm right there with Jessamyn about not being super thrilled about the post in practice.

But not in a "get out of here" sort of way.

I've been avoiding the gun threads we've been getting lately. I love the spirited discussion here, but I just don't have the energy to go over the same ground again and again.

I'm pleased to see that popechunk was able to maintain such a civil disposition through such a contentious topic. I'll hope to take his style as being instructive as to how I should try to comport myself in similar situations.

I'll fail, of course. But I'll make a token effort.

Yeah my apologies if baphomet thought I was administering a subtle beatdown. My feeling was and is basically: this was a pretty heavy-handed post on a topic MeFi doesn't do well, I'm not sure what the poster is trying to accomplish. I'm aware that this site is different things to different people, and my dream MetaFilter does not involve any more threads that turn into people yelling at each other, regardless of topic. I know baphomet was trying to say something nice and I apologize if my early downer comment set a bad tone.

Good to read this. But not at all in a 'baphomet, go home' kind of way.

The title alone was pretty strong. "No end in sight". To what? If the answer is, Liberals' continuous assaults on the 2nd Amendment, then yes, I agree.

I suspect that the criticisms of bias (e.g. Thought Police) arise more from impressions made by the near unanimity of the membership on certain issues, than specific actions taken by moderators. It stands to reason that most of the posts which have a little too much editorializing, but not enough to yank, are going to be representative of the community's politics. And when someone who doesn't share in the politics of the majority, sees those borderline posts (not to mention sees them commended, "good post"), it looks like overt support. It's not that I think the post should have been removed, I don't, or that MetaFilter should eliminate any tilt, a ridiculous goal, it's just refreshing to see the occasional acknowledgement that some of these lefty posts are pushing the limits.

jessamyn: my dream MetaFilter does not involve any more threads that turn into people yelling at each other, regardless of topic

I have a dream that one day this website will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "Comments should not be directed at other members of the site."

I have a dream that one day on the differently colored subsites of MetaFilter the old-timers and newbies will be able to speak together like reasonable adults.

I have a dream that one day even MetaTalk, a subsite sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of reasoned discourse.

I have a dream that the members will one day post on a website where they will not be judged by their comment history but by the content of what they have written.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day, down in MetaTalk, with its vicious flamewars, with its mods having their words taken extra seriously by everyone; one day right there in MetaTalk, little MeFite boys and MeFite girls will be able to join hands as sisters and brothers without a 1000 comment thread about sexism breaking out.

I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day every AskMe question shall be pertinent, every MetaFilter post shall be made without editorializing, the rough MetaTalk callouts will be made constructive, and the crooked spammers will be made disappear, and the glory of the MetaFilter shall be revealed, and all the internet it shall see together.
