cortex vs. NYC: the meetupening April 17, 2009 12:34 PM   Subscribe

I'll be in NYC soon (from Thurs. April 30th to Sun. May 3rd) for Gel 2009 and I'd love to have a meetup. mathowie will be in town too!

Friday night or Saturday whenever would would work for me; Friday night would mean Matt can come as well, I think he takes off Saturday morning.

Wife and I are staying near Times Square and know absolutely nothing about New York, so someone else is in charge of figuring out where this would happen, etc.

Dang, so in this thread: I was beginning to arrive at the conclusion that hosting a MeFi Meetup in the Upper West Side after The Sorceror Friday evening would be a good move.

On the other hand, if you want to do something a bit more centrally located for Team NYC, we have had good luck so far with Revival. I will defer to some of the more active Meetupers.

posted by hermitosis at 1:20 PM on April 17, 2009

In a pinch, I really do like Revival, it's central and cheap with access to nearby nibbles, and we always get that huge upstairs room mostly to ourselves.
posted by hermitosis at 1:22 PM on April 17, 2009

How about we meet up at Kabin? I'll call and see if we can reserve the back room for ourselves. We went to a party there in the back room and it was very nice. I think it would be good for a meetup. Fat Cat looks nice, but I don't think it'd be great for a meetup.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 1:22 PM on April 17, 2009

gah, cortex and I have different definitions of 'next weekend'. Okay, so we could still do a UWS mini-meetup next Friday, April 23, before/after a show at The Sorceror?

Kabin is decently close to Union Square, I admit I'm curious to check it out.
posted by hermitosis at 1:25 PM on April 17, 2009

Fat Cat is fun, it would be crowded on a Friday night, even as early as 8pm.

Let the Hemming and Hawing commence!

cortex, best if you pick an official NYC party-organizer. I cannot recommend ThePinkSuperhero more highly for this position :)
posted by onalark at 1:25 PM on April 17, 2009

Kabin has a huge room in the back that can be reserved for a meetup. Lots of couches and space as well. It's easy to get too. I second that place. And the front is pretty divey so it's kinda a win-win.

Pomme Frite also has poutine, for those who are curious. Theirs is a pretty close approximation of the delicious French-Canadian dish, actually. Though they don't really know what it is they are serving, as I ordered a large (my wife and I considered two larges, but decided not to be fatties) and they gave it to us with FIVE forks. Like their puny little "large" poutine could serve five people. Poutine is MADE for over consumption after a night of over-consuming drinks. Good stuff.

While we're at it, appo polly logies to Jason's planet for being so adamant about taking that photo last night (he knows which one).
That said, I'm going to be just as annoying until I actually see it...

I'm still struggling to put names to usernames to faces. Last night was kind of a whirlwind, but Stynxno's photos helped close some of the gaps. I'm probably at like 80% now, which isn't bad considering.

It was nice to meet some whom I'd missed at earlier meetups - booksandlibretti and Evangeline and smackfu and dormantgorilla, and others whose usernames are complex and hard to say out loud (you know who you are). Cortex and number 1 are way taller than I expected.

Had a great time and I love everybody. Those who have met me before were no doubt already familiar with my antics. Those who met me for the first time undoubtedly noticed that my online persona is practically indistinguishable from my actual persona. For better or for worse.

Oh yeah -- and I GOT MY T-SHIRT SIGNED! Two years in the making!

I feel kinda like the paperboy from Better Off Dead -- "two dollars! two dollars!"

No worries re: the Jagermeister incident. I'm actually still more baffled how I ended up with it in my hand in the first place.

Well, except for the hair, Genericoblanco.

I agree with Robocop and was very disappointed re: the false advertising, Yuppoblanco.

Dear HATERZ,

A dude in his 20s with an afro? More-or-less okay.

A dude in his 30s with an afro? Ummmm, no.

I dare you to dispute me on this point.

I have to say NYC meet up was well worth the trip.
Had a fantastic time, thanks to amicamentis for putting me up for the night, and to whoever was responsible for my 6th and 7th drinks i don't know you, but I love you.

Yeow, that was bigger and more crowded and louder than I ever thought it'd be. At one point we counted 36 people standing in the space, so given the early and late comers, it could have been a 50+ person meetup. Sorry I didn't get to meet everyone, I left when my voice was straining and I was starting to feel run down. Thanks for organizing the space and everything ThePinkSuperhero!

I don't know how Stynxno got such clear bright pictures shooting in such a dark room with no flash. Thank god I cleaned my fingernails, I wasn't expecting that kind of scrutiny. Nice job, sir.

Did no one get poutine?! Or were they already out of sauce by the time you got there? I hate it when that happens.
