New comments indicators more indicative February 6, 2002 10:20 PM Subscribe
I fixed the long standing new comments bug on MetaTalk, so the new comments indicators should be more reliable and not "disappear" on you when you refresh the main page.
Whee! Thanks, Matt.

I'm sorry.. been working on homework since noon (with occasional metafilter breaks) so maybe my mind is just fried, but what do you mean by new links? The new links on the front page? Aren't they already differentiated from old ones by being higher up?
Oh, wait, no.. ok, you can sort the front page by criteria other than date. Got it. Good idea.
I will (without embarassment) leave this here in case anyone else was as confused as I was over a seemingly redundant upgrade.
Back to the homework.

It'll be a way to share stuff you like with others, without any sort of required payment.
This sounds really cool. Better than a pony. :) I can't wait to see what form it takes. (Will self-linking be a problem?)

I'm probably wierd, but I miss the way it was before you fixed it, because I could see when something actually was "new", rather than "new before I just read it five minutes ago". Anyway, I'll get used to it.

This is brilliant. I used to write the new comments down with a pencil but was too embarrassed to bring it up because I thought it was a browser problem.
Now I'll never again miss or re-read anything on MetaTalk. So thanks a million, Matt. I guess... ;)

And I'm working on a new big community feature that's sort of like textads, but different. It'll be a way to share stuff you like with others, without any sort of required payment. I'm hoping to launch it next week.
Oh, I should say sorry about all the database timeouts lately. I'm still in the process of hand optimizing the database one query at a time (the site has dozens of them all over), but I hope things will be more stable when I finish the conversions over to stored procedures and re-indexing of tables.
