mathowie, mullacc, SassHat, and ColdChef is coming to WarmL.A.! May 18, 2009 4:44 PM   Subscribe

Los Angeles Mefites, your attention please: We are about to be visited by one of Metafilter's most distinguished gentlemen. Please join us on Thursday, June 11, to welcome ColdChef to the City of Angels, and make this evening of LA-meets-L.A. a meetup to remember!

I'm proposing Farmer's Market on 3rd for a few reasons: ColdChef must experience it anyway while he's in town; it's close to a number of other sights he might conceivably be visiting during the day; it's got a wide selection of food and drink to make everyone happy.

What say you, good Angelenos?

I'll be flying in that day as well. Are we talking the actual farmer's market in Santa Monica or is there some crazy bar now called Farmer's Market I've never heard of?

75 years is pretty old for Los Angeles establishments...

I think I take a final earlier that day, so I'll definitely be up a drink or two.

The Farmer's Market in question is neither a bar nor a real farmer's market. It's chief (perhaps only) virtue is that it is within walking distance of scody's place of employment. It is, in essence, the (historically significant, granted) food court of a giant outdoor mall.
posted by Parasite Unseen at 5:02 PM on May 18, 2009

I'm going to come right out and apologize now for how snarky and unproductive that last comment of mine was. I'm sure we'll have a lovely time, as the company will be good. Scody, my apologies for being such an obnoxious little shit about the location. It's actually a very practical place for a group of our potential size.
posted by Parasite Unseen at 5:04 PM on May 18, 2009

Sure, apology accepted. (And does it count as a "food court" if the mall in question came along 65 years after the market was built?) Parking can be a little bit of a pain, but the north lot usually has spaces even if the main one is full.

May I humbly suggest that the title for this post be changed to "mathowie, mullacc, SassHat, and ColdChef are coming to WarmLA", and perhaps the interest in a meetup will increase fourfold?

The mall food court comparison is unfair, it's an awesome food court that is virtually free of chain restaurants and your food looks like this or possibly this.
posted by mandymanwasregistered at 5:28 PM on May 18, 2009

For an even greater increase in interest, you might want to make that "mathowie, mullacc, SassHat, and ColdChef are coming to WarmLA and dersins is not."

Bull pucky. They have some awesome produce and food markets in there. Farm Boy is one of my favorite places to buy fruit and vegetables, they've got stuff fresh from the grower and cheaper than Trader Joe's. Now that I live in 818 I've found Farm Boy's Sherman Oaks location and go there at least once a week, but I first discovered their awesomeness when I was in Farmer's Market.

Not trying to start an argument here (honest!), but as awesome a produce market as it may be, what you are describing is not a farmers' market. At a farmers' market, you actually buy directly from the individual grower or farmer, not from a a shop (or stall) where "they've got stuff fresh from the grower." It's really not the same same. I have relatives who are actual farmers in southern California, and they kind of scoff at the idea of the "Farmer's Market" being an actual farmers' market. (Instead they sell at the Hollywood/Sunset market and Santa Monica, which are real, actual farmers' markets.)

They will be hosting an original show of over 400 cels from the Anime genre, including Yugioh, Dragon Ball, Akira, and many other notable works. The show is free, very professional and open between 10am and 5pm in Beverly Hills.

See you at Loteria.

Effluvia, note that Farmer's Market closes at 9, so you may not be able to catch us at Loteria if you arrive later than that. For that reason, we should still consider figuring out a place to adjourn post-market. Canter's?

That's true. And that's what it was when I was a kid. Now you have to go to the valley for that and Farm Boy is as close as you're going to get other than the weekly FM circuit.

God, I'm so relieved to hear I'm not the only one with a bourbon headache this morning afternoon. I'm also relieved I hoarded all my sick days awhile back, so that I could use one today.

Spectacular evening, and indeed one that sets the bar high for the 10th anniversary party! Speaking of which, I have completely spaced out (for reasons unknown!) who originally made the suggestion for renting out a bowling alley for said anniversary blowout. If you're reading this, drop me a line with the details, plz.

Great evening, even though liquoredonlife has my arse in the first photo! Yeah, I was the one passing around the world's best toffee!

I have a CC business card.

Also, I woke up to a mail server emergency that took all day to figure out, which was not the easiest thing to do with a slight hangover / 5 hours sleep.

Great meeting everyone, I look forward to adjusting to the new area that is LA.

I move into my new place in Marina Del Rey tomorrow, so if folks have any extra couches they need to get rid of, you know who to memail.

Wonderful meetup! My wife took a few pictures - Nikon D300 + Sigma 28mm f/1.8. DaShiv was offered use of the camera, which he declined - and here I thought he was the official mefi-meet photographer?! So, the white balance is what it is. If somebody was not photographed, it's because they snuck out to watch the Lakers on the big TV at the bar next door!

I am so bummed, I missed it. Ah, well... next time.

Oh, Christ, who's who again? I want to update my contacts list, but I couldn't tell who all was there and who I met…

As a side note, I did wake up on Friday to find that my pants pockets were inexplicably stuffed with candy, so if any of you has any idea how that happened (besides some sort of pants fairy), lemme know.

That was indeed fun and slightly overwhelming and it was good to meet new peoples! Even though I had to arrive late (post-Loteria) and was too shy to talk to numero uno. :(

I love the goofy faces from all of the animated discussions going on the background of those pics.

Klang, we went here and after your fifteenth Manhattan you demanded everyone play a round of "Stuff the Piñata". Or that's what I think you said. Most of it was in German.

Oh shit, after you left, that chick was giving me all this, "My boyfriend doesn't understand me…" and I was like, "I don't understand you… I don't understand English… I'm drunk."

I remember talking to some mefites about hanging out and getting shown around my new home of LA, but I forgot who you are. Memail me if you remember who you were, so I can start exploring this weird place you call home.

Since I mentioned it before, just a heads up... the management of the Smokehouse cancelled the jam session as of LAST WEEK. Had to be the week before I host!!! Ugh. It's really a stupid decision by the Smokehouse since the place was packed every week. They insist they didn't make enough money, but if they cut the prices on their drinks they'd make a lot more. (Their martinis are like $14.)

Anyhow, so I will not be hosting the Smokehouse jam session tomorrow night. Don't go there. :(
