Lipstick, I think your tattoo beats out a laptop case etching any day.

MetaFilter tattoo? Is there photographic evidence of this?
posted by Captain Cardanthian! at 9:37 PM on June 28, 2009

Here's photo/video of the laptop etching. I haven't sought similar evidence of the tattoo, but I'm sure someone else will.

LT has a MetaChat tattoo, and it is hardcore.

I mean, really if you're going to a get a tattoo of something in the MetaFilter Universe™ then MeCha is the only way to go. That, or, pissing elephant.

Yeah, I got my macbook air laser etched. It's pretty awesome and I would highly suggest it to anyone else. You don't have to do the MeFi logo, you can etch pretty much any vector art onto any laptop for $100. And Phil Torrene does it, the father of Make Magazine and a zillion cool DIY sites and projects.

That's it, Mathowie! You think your badASS with the Metafilter Lappytoppy?

I'm getting the first-ever limited-edition Lipstick Thespian Laptop with Bonus Bunny engraving.

There won't be a warehouse anywhere on Earth to hold my groupies.

I have spoken.

And oh yah - I got the MetaTatt. Reprezent!
posted by Lipstick Thespian at 10:04 PM on June 28, 2009

I need a laptop etched with that pic of LT showing off his Metatatt.

You know, for added metaness.

Not just saying that because laser etching a dell would probably just melt it :\

Oh cool!

I think I know a place or three in the Bay Area with laser etchers, if anyone else is that hardcore.

(I'd rather have a Mefi beer glass.)

Are you talking free or barter? I am. I can prep my own vector designs and everything.

I have a black plastic MSI netbook, though, but if they can etch it without exploding it I can pigment it. I'd probably try the way people used to pigment their colored RPG dice, with a bit of crayon - colored wax or paint down in the etch, or maybe colored epoxy filler.

You could likely do colored/opaque epoxy or paint fills on metal, too. If it was done right, it'd look pretty bad ass, like an enameled pin or plaque.

(I'd rather have a Mefi beer glass.)

They might be able to etch glass. I'd imagine you'd have to design and adapt to the contour of a pint glass, which shouldn't be that hard.

If not they could probably cut us a mask or stencil for acid-etching our own glasses. You could also probably get this cut with a vinyl sign cutter.

The cheaper, non-permanent alternative: custom "etched glass" decals from places like this etsy seller. My fiancee got one, and it totally looks like an etching.

The folks from Instructables were demo-ing an Epilog rig by laser-etching laptops and moleskines at their booth for the '08 bay area Maker Faire. Not sure if that's a repeated thing, but if you can wait, it might be one route.

It's because you are trying to use it to kill British secret agents, isn't it? May I make a suggestion? Once you capture the guy, just shoot him. The laser is cool but he'll probably escape and fuck up your plans for world domination.

Seriously, shoot him and be done with it.

And for the love of all that is evil, don't tell him your plans before you do; it's a complete rookie move.

I used to work at a sign shop with a laser engraver, and glass is no problem.

'Oh, I'm not sure about that. Are they erotic?'

'Erotic? I'll say. I've got Hard and Soft Taters etched onto my desktop, and Metafilter etched onto my laptop.'

This kind of reminds me of the time, in 1979 or so, my mom bought me a red and black hoodie that said "Disco" on the front.
I quickly realized at school that this was not a good thing.
She sewed a patch of a racing flag over the dreaded word.

I tried that once. I gained 80 pounds, had the tattoo done, then lost the weight again. It looked like my whole body had been sucking on a lemon. Kinda like Janice Dickinson after a couple of hours in a hot tub filled with Preparation H. Luckily it was only a Henna tattoo, so babies have stopped crying at the sight of me. Mostly.

I've been vaguely and noncommittally considering a mefi-themed tattoo for a while. Meaty-lookin' Thor-ish banhammer with my usernumber incorporated onto it somehow, maybe a snake coiled around the handle with "meta / fil / ter" written across visible segments of its body or something.

I can't decide if it's a terrible idea or an awesome one or what, but I suppose if I went through with it I could get Matt to write it off as a marketing expense.

For you prospective MetaFilter-branders, I thought I might also just point out that most sign companies who provide vehicle wraps have the ability to "wrap" your laptop with a custom vinyl design as well.

loquacious: Ah, sorry about the delay. I misread you as having some capacity to do this already. I blame a horrible lack of caffeine when I read this earlier.

Off of the top of my head:
* The Evil Mad Scientist Labs made the Kindling (wooden Kindle). Though they might just use the laser cutter at:
* The Techshop, which I think has membership & class fees. I was going to list Laura Mappin separately, but it looks like she teaches a class at the Techshop.
So, I'd check EMSL, Laura Mappin, then Techshop.

Separately, I was thinking of a printed beer glass. Though I do know someone who used to sandblast, hmmm...

Some may suggest a bitter, bitter IPA, but I think a fruity but sour Flanders red is more appropriate.

Or just put some blue food coloring in a pale ale. These folks aren't opposed to a gimmick.
